Pennsbury-Neshaminy boys lacrosse games can be characterized as “friendly rivalries”, with many of the players being former teammates from the Lower Bucks Lacrosse Youth program. While they are friends off the field, the teams play hard against each other for bragging rights. In 2008, Neshaminy and Pennsbury split the season series. Today, Pennsbury took the lead in this year's season series with a strong 9-3 victory over the visiting Indians.

Neshaminy came out strong at the opening whistle, winning the face-off and controlling offensive play in the Falcon end of the field for almost three minutes. After a shot wide by Neshaminy, the Pennsbury defense cleared the ball downfield to set up the Falcon's first offensive opportunity. They were quickly aided by a slashing penalty and converted on the extra man opportunity, with attackman Kenneth Warren receiving a cross-crease pass from middie Ricky Jutkiewicz and banging a 'no-angle' shot off the far post and into the net.

Pennsbury dominated play for the rest of the quarter with middie Shawn Caven winning the face-off and controlling the play. Kenneth Warren returned the favor by scooping up a ground ball and feeding Ricky Jutkiewicz, who split a double up top and fired in a goal. Following the next face-off, the Pennsbury defense held strong and goalie David Cutler made two saves before clearing way down the field where attackman Calvin Hopkins 'threaded the needle' to a waiting Ricky Jutkiewicz for Pennsbury's third goal of the game. Neshaminy again won the next face-off and David Cutler again saved a Neshaminy shot by middie Andy McPherson, setting up a fast break the other way. Calvin Hopkins made a cross-crease feed to Kenneth Warren who sent an off-speed shot arching over the goalie's stick for the score. Pennsbury's Shawn Caven won the subsequent face-off and Calvin Hopkins dodged from behind the crease and fed a cutting middie Tim Considine for the fifth and final goal of the quarter.

The Nesaminy Indians dug in their heels in the second quarter and played strong team defense, with great individual efforts in causing turnovers. The Falcons also played tough 'D' until Neshaminy's Andy McPherson found attackman Chris Brady wide open on the back side of the defense with a looping pass that Chris rifled past the Pennsbury goalie for the only goal of the quarter, and sending the teams into halftime with Pennsbury in the lead by a 5-1 tally.

The third quarter saw freshman middie Evan Caterson win the initial draw for Pennsbury, who worked the ball around until Tim Considine found Kenneth Warren open on the right side, who caught, turned and ripped a top shelf goal past the Neshaminy goalie Eugene LaBorde. The teams continued to play back-and-forth lacrosse until with a minute left in the quarter, Ricky Jutkeiwicz found Shawn Caven in the middle in front of the crease, who fired a quick turnaround shot into the back of the net, to close out the third quarter with Pennsbury up by a 7-1 margin.

Pennsbury came out quickly to start the fourth quarter with Evan Caterson winning the face-off, getting the ball down to the attack, and cutting to the net. He got a pass back from attackman Peter Sweetland, spun away from a defender, and shot a rocket into the net for a 8-1 Pennsbury lead just 15 seconds into the quarter. But Neshaminy fought back with two goals, the first on a pass from Andy McPherson over the defense to attackman Jason Thibedeau who was wide open on the back side for the put in. The second came with seven minutes left in the game, saw Andy McPherson – who was involved in all three Neshaminy scores – dodge from up top, spin away from his defender, and rip a shot past Pennsbury goalie David Cutler. With the score now at 8-3, Pennsbury struck back four minutes later on an extra man opportunity with Peter Sweetland feeding freshman middie Ryan McDonald cutting down the right side for the goal, which finalized the game score at 9-3 for the Falcons.

These friendly rivals meet again on April 30 at Neshamiy, which is also a fund-raising event for the HEADStrong foundation. Both teams will be wearing the signature lime green HEADStrong laces and also the new HEADStrong crew socks. Please come out and get your HEADStrong gear and help support both great lacrosse and the fight against blood cancer. Find out how you can help at www.headstrongfoundation.org.

The win puts Pennsbury at 5-4 for the year and 3-0 in the Suburban One National conference. Neshaminy is 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the Suburban One National conference.
