Defense Shines as Indians Advance in PIAA Tournament
NEWTOWN, PA – In a landmark night for Council Rock North girls lacrosse, the Indians hosted their second home playoff game in two years — a first in school history — and rose to the occasion with a hard-fought 10–7 victory over a tough Boyertown squad in the opening round of the PIAA District 1 playoffs.
From the opening whistle, the matchup delivered playoff intensity. Boyertown struck first, quieting the home crowd and forcing the Indians to settle in quickly. Both teams exchanged runs through the first half, with Council Rock North leaning heavily on a swarming defense and timely saves from junior goalie Lucy Carney to keep the game within reach.
Carney was sensational in the cage, stopping 65% of the shots she faced and disrupting Boyertown’s offense with multiple interceptions and ground ball recoveries outside the crease. Her poise and aggression in the clearing game set the tone defensively.
Led by a gritty midfield unit, Council Rock North took control in the second half. Ellie Carney led the charge with 4 goals, 4 ground balls, 5 draw controls, and a forced turnover. Her work between the 30s was vital in gaining possession and establishing momentum.
Fellow middie Catherine McBride continued her strong postseason play with 3 goals, 3 ground balls, 5 draw controls, and 1 forced turnover, consistently pushing transition and drawing defensive pressure.
Gabby Mann led the offense with precision, contributing 1 goal and 3 assists while also sparking ball movement on key possessions. Olivia Espozito (1G, 3GB) and Addison Deppi (1G, 3GB) added critical scoring depth, while Mackenzie Pyle chipped in with an assist and a ground ball.
On the defensive end, Council Rock North’s backline held firm. Keiley Lyons (3GB, 1FT), Abby Steadman (2GB), Addison Kohler (1GB, key hustle play), and Ella G. anchored a unit that closed passing lanes, pressured dodgers, and fought for every loose ball.
The win marks another milestone in Council Rock North’s historic season at 16-2 it is the best record in recent memory. A big challenge awaits with a Thursday game against lacrosse powerhouse Radnor.
