We were really happy to celebrate our senior class tonight, thanks to North Penn for playing and providing a great game. This group of seniors has evolved into a great class of leaders through their actions on the field and their off field approach to the program. We are graduating 9 seniors this year, 7 of whom were able to play tonight, DJ Lepore and Maura Ott are both in different stages of ACL recovery but they continue to support the group and be a part of our success.
I think it's tough to play on senior night, there are always some changes to the line up, the ceremonies upset the rhythm of preparation and the opponents are always fired up to compete. North Penn were more dangerous in the early stages, they caused us many problems down our right and side and they deservedly took the lead on a follow up after a good save from Emma Tobias on a long range shot.
We started to settle down a little bit and a ball over the top found Mia Cairone who held off her defender, dribbled past the keeper and slotted home calmly with her left foot. Within 10 mins a similar move led to Mia getting in behind again, this time holding off 2 challenges before beating the keeper with a low shot with her right foot.
At half time we stressed a little more possession with the ball and while we succeeded early in the second half, North Penn continued to be dangerous, Danielle Eden made a couple of solid saves, but with 6 minutes left a cross into our box caused some confusion and led to a handball. North Penn ties on a pk.
As the clock ticked down we were able to to win a couple of set pieces, Sara Tyler delivered an excellent cross from the right and Mia was there once again to volley home the winner with 12 seconds left. A goal that was more than worthy of winning the game.
Mia's hat trick tonight was confirmation of what we already knew about her, she is a threat and even though she is a freshman she is mature and calm in her play around the goal. Her confidence is growing as she gets used to HS play and she is an important weapon for us.
While we are happy with our win it is definitely a night to salute our senior group. Emma Tobias, Riley Hamilton, Morgan McCaffery, Shannon Liedl, DJ Lepore, Maura Ott, Marlena Ries, Kyra DelSignore and Taylor Brennan have all been huge assets to our program over the last 4 years. We will definitely miss them but we continue to fight to make sure we can play as many games as possible with them before they leave us!
