After another heart-breaking late one-goal loss in the league at Wiss Tuesday night, our team bounced back today at home vs. Hatboro. We played Hatboro the first time through the division and gave up a sloppy goal in the final minutes to lose 1-0.
Today was another tight battle. We played really well in the first half. Hatboro got into the game into the second half and it was much more back and forth.
We had the tap in the second overtime and junior midfielder Maddie McGuckien sends a long ball off the tap into their backline; an unfortunate handball occurs a couple yards outside the 18. Maddie McGuckien asked to take the free kick, pretty much right in the middle of the field. Hatboro set up a five-player wall and McGuckien found the outside of the wall to put it in the corner of the net.
It was Maddie’s team-leading 8th goal of the season (in 13 games). Maddie wants the ball in those situations. She is an alpha-type personality and player and those are the type of players you want up in those situations.
It is worth nothing that this game was our 7th clean sheet of the season, matching last season’s total. Credit to goalkeeper Olivia Bragg and our backline of Katie Lukens, Kaiane Jayo, Maddie McLaughlin, and Harper Reilly. We’ve given up 16 goals in 16 games and if you told me that on August 12th – with a new goalkeeper and new defense - I would have signed up for it in a second. That being said, we expected to be in a better position at this point of the season but with today’s win, we live to fight another day. We host Abington on Monday and recognize the challenge they present. I’m excited to see how our team responds to that challenge.
