Brittany Sandone (Souderton) became just the 10th member of the Cabrini College women’s basketball 1,000 Point Club. The senior guard reached the historic milestone with a three-pointer 4:35 into the Cavaliers’ 75-40 win over Eastern University on Tuesday night in the ‘Battle of Eagle Road.’
“I was blessed to have that goal be accomplished,” Sandone said. “It was in our most competitive game of the year in the ‘Battle of Eagle Road’ against Eastern.
“Knowing that was my last ‘Battle of Eagle Road,’ we got the win, and then on top of it, I got my 1,000 (points) – nothing better could happen that night. It was a really good time.”
Scoring a thousand points was not a goal Sandone established when she stepped onto the court as part of coach Kate Pearson’s first recruiting class for a program that was in a rebuilding mode.
“That wasn’t my main focus back then, but as I got closer, I realized my leadership role was to be a scorer and to help offensively,” Sandone said. “I wanted to win before I scored a thousand points.”
Last year, the Cavaliers turned the corner, capturing the Centennial Conference title and earning a berth to the NCAA Tournament.
“This year we want to just to make it a step further than we did last year,” Sandone said. “The women’s team has never made it past the first round of the NCAA Tournament. That’s one of our goals to win that first round and get to the second round.”
Sandone received All-CSAC honors for three straight years, earning a spot on the first team last year after receiving second team honors as a sophomore. She averaged 14.4 points a game last year, and through four games this year is averaging 16.8 points a game.
“Brittany has worked really hard to become a standout player in our league and help elevate our women’s basketball program,” coach Kate Pearson said. “We are all really proud of all she has accomplished thus far and look forward to seeing her continue to flourish in her senior year.”
In Saturday’s 73-58 win over No. 25 Widener University, Sandone led the Cavaliers with 19 points, including 13 after the break. Cabrini improved to 3-1.
