SOFTBALL
Souderton softball coach Stephanie Denlinger Rummel (Souderton) was one of six members inducted into the Kutztown University Hall of Fame on Saturday at an on-campus ceremony. The six new inductees increase the membership to 187 since the Hall of Fame was formed in 1977. In addition to Saturday’s induction ceremony, the hall of famers were introduced prior to the Golden Bears’ football game against Lock Haven.
Rummel (2006-09) was named the 2009 Daktronics National Player of the Year, the first Golden Bear to do so. She broke the NCAA Division II all-time record for home runs with 79 (still stands today) and walks (159). She also holds the PSAC record for career RBIs. She is Kutztown’s all-time leader in runs scored and total bases and is second in batting average, third in doubles, fourth in hits and sixth in games played.
Along with being named the National Player of the Year in her senior year, Denlinger was a two-time Daktronics All-America first team selection. She was a two-time PSAC East and Daktronics Atlantic Region Player of the Year, a four-time All-PSAC East and NFCA All-Atlantic Region First Team selection, a three-time all-region player, and the 2006 PSAC East Freshman of the Year. She was a two-time Kutztown Female Athlete of the Year and the 2009 Female Senior Athlete of the Year. Over her four years, Denlinger led KU to four NCAA Tournament appearances and 169 wins for a 72.8 winning percentage. In PSAC play, KU was 74-14 for an 84.1 winning percentage. Denlinger is the head coach of the 2014 PIAA Class AAAA State Champion Souderton varsity softball team. She is married to Philip Rummel, also a Kutztown graduate and a former baseball player.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Freshman Ross Wilson (Council Rock North) posted a time of 25:20.1 in the University of Penn’s third place finish at the Heptagonal Championships at Princeton on Saturday.
Penn State Abington junior Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) led the Nittany Lions and finished first overall out of 83 runners with a time of 27:18.8 at the NEAC Championships on Saturday. Kane is now a two-time conference champion and was named NEAC Runner of the Year. He has earned conference honors for the third time. Senior Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) crossed the line in 12th place with a time of 28:43.1 while Billy Donovan (Upper Moreland) finished with a time of 29:57.3, good for 24th place.
Gwynedd Mercy’s Ben Keliojor (Norristown) finished 50th at the 2014 CSAC Men’s Cross Country Championships.
La Salle sophomore Chris Berry (Central Bucks West) finished in 73rd place at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday morning, posting a time of 26:23.7. Junior Chris Trimble (North Penn) was the next Explorer to cross the finish line, posting a time of 26:36.5 and finishing 87th overall.
Widener senior Michael Quinn (Plymouth Whitemarsh) finished in 17th place at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships on Saturday. For his performance he earned second team All-MAC honors. Widener captured its second straight MAC title.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Messiah’s Natalie Ross (Souderton) finished 18th at the MAC Championships on Saturday and, as a result, was named to the all-conference second team. Emma Barbagallo (Council Rock North) and Leah Novak (Souderton) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, for the Falcons.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Brittany Finn (Upper Moreland) finished fourth overall with a time of 23:54 at the 2014 Colonial State Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at Cairn University. Finn earned first team all-conference recognition.
Teammates Hannah Geiger (Council Rock South) and Emily Makara (Council Rock South) finished 11th and 12th respectively and garnered second team all-
conference recognition. Gwynedd unseated four-time champion Marywood to capture the conference team title.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Shippensburg junior forward Stephanie Knauer (North Penn), a two-time All-PSAC East performer, was one of six players named to the 2014-15 All-PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Team. Shippensburg was voted as the No. 3 team in the PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Coaches’ Poll released Thursday.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Elizabethtown’s Liz Wedekind (Pennsbury) finished 16th at the Landmark Cross Country Championships on Saturday. The Blue Jays, winners of seven straight MAC titles before moving to the Landmark, captured their eighth consecutive conference crown.
FIELD HOCKEY
Freshman Megan Hamilton (Central Bucks South) scored a pair of goals in Providence’s 7-0 win at Villanova on Saturday. With the win, the Friars punched their ticket to the BIG EAST Tournament as the number four seed. Providence enters the tournament with a league-best 65 goals, the second highest single season goal total in program history. In last Sunday’s 6-3 win over UMass Lowell, Hamilton contributed a goal and an assist.
Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) took a shot that was stopped on the goal line by a defender, but her teammate was there to put it in the cage with just two seconds on the clock, propelling Delaware Valley to a 1-0 win over Eastern on Tuesday. As a result of the win, the Aggies remained alive in the Freedom Conference tournament hunt.
Messiah College senior defender Becky Ely (Council Rock North) was selected to participate in the 2014 Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division III Senior Game. The game will be played at Washington & Lee University on Saturday, Nov. 22. Of the 59 seniors selected to participate, Ely is one of only three players from the Commonwealth Conference. The Rock North grad has started on defense in all 17 games for the Falcons this season and has even chipped in on the offensive end. Mostly pushing forward on penalty corners, Ely has collected three goals – including one game winner – on 18 shots to go along with five assists for a total of 11 points.
Ely connected on a penalty stroke and teammate Kristin Donohue (Council Rock South) had an assist in Messiah’s 3-1 win over William Smith on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Albright, Donohue scored a goal while Ely had an assist.
Freshman Melissa Herd (Pennridge) scored her third goal of the season in St. Joseph’s 3-1 win over Brown on Sunday.
Sophomore Marissa Glatt (Central Bucks East) had a goal and an assist in Lehigh’s 3-2 loss to La Salle on Sunday. Teammate Gabby Tofig (Council Rock North), who leads the Mountain Hawks with 17 points (eight goals, one assist), had an assist. In Lehigh’s 4-1 loss to Bucknell on Saturday, Glatt scored her team’s only goal.
Freshman Rachael Mueller (William Tennent) scored twice in a span of three minutes in No. 16 Temple’s 4-3 loss to No. 4 UConn on Saturday.

Sophomore Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) recorded her second shutout of the season in The College of New Jersey’s 2-0 win over Rowan University on Saturday. She was forced to make just one save. In last Sunday’s 1-0 win over Juniata, Schlupp and Amanda Krause (Council Rock North) shared the shutout without having to face a shot.
Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed an assist in Kutztown’s 4-2 loss to second-ranked West Chester University on Tuesday night.
Alayna Brown (Souderton) posted a hat trick and an assist in West Chester’s 10-0 win over Mansfield University on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
After tying a school record and becoming the first player in school history to post more than 300 all-purpose yards in a game, Lycoming senior running back Craig Needhammer (North Penn) was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 2. Needhammer accumulated 304 all-purpose yards in Lycoming’s 28-14 win over Misericordia on Saturday. He had a career high 239 yards rushing, three yards receiving and 62 yards on kick returns to lead Lycoming. His 239 yards rushing is the third highest in school history, behind only two performances from Tim Deasey in 2001. He also moved within 285 yards of the school’s all-time rushing record of 3,665 yards set by Josh Kleingelter (2007-10), and the 200-yard performance helped him tie Brian Thompson’s school record of 15 100-yard rushing games set from 1995-98. Needhammer also scored his 10th rushing touchdown of the season, becoming just the third player in program history to notch 10 rushing touchdowns in back-to-back seasons. The award is the third in Needhammer’s career as he also earned it on Oct. 6, 2013, after a 144-yard game against 16th-ranked Delaware Valley and on Nov. 4, 2012, after rushing for 127 yards against Stevenson.
Sophomore running back Corey Kelly (Plymouth Whitemarsh) rushed for 41 yards on 16 carries in Ursinus College’s 42-14 loss to ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Bruce Campbell (Pennsbury) made his first career start in East Stroudsburg’s 34-13 loss to No. 6 Bloomsburg on Saturday. Campbell was 12-for-25 for 109 yards and one touchdown.
Senior wide receiver Mike Doty (Central Bucks South) caught six passes for 63 yards and two touchdowns in No. 20 West Chester’s 58-0 win over Cheyney on Saturday.
Myron Miles (Wissahickon) rushed for 112 yards, which included a 71-yard touchdown run, in Millersville’s 60-16 loss to East Stroudsburg on Saturday.
Senior linebacker James Brennan (Upper Merion) notched a career-high three sacks, including two in the first three plays of the game, in Shippensburg’s 60-16 win over Millersville on Saturday. Brennan nearly matched his career sacks total in one game, as he entered Saturday with 3.5 sacks through 44 games played.
Freshman kicker Alec Rosenfeld (Bensalem) converted his only field goal attempt from 19 yards and moves to 10-for-11 on the season in Kutztown’s 19-0 win over Lock Haven on Saturday.
MEN’S GOLF
Penn State Abington junior Mike Lam (Neshaminy) was named as the NEAC Men’s Golfer of the Week for the week ending Oct. 26. Lam was the individual medalist at the Rosemont Invitational as he shot a two-over 72 to top the rest of the 11-golfer field on the par-70 course. The performance helped the Nittany Lions claim first place overall.
Lam shot a 78 (+12) and finished tied for 12th at the Immaculata Fall Invitational on Monday at the Whitford Country Club. Sean Ailtmar (Central Bucks South) shot an 84 (+13). Penn State Abington finished ninth out of 13 teams.
Temple senior Matt Teesdale (Hatboro-Horsham) finished the day with a seven-over 79 (t-71st) at the Wendy’s Kiawah Classic in Charleston, S.C., on Sunday. As a team, the Owls were tied for 16th in the 20-team field.
MEN’S SOCCER
Penn State junior midfielder and architectural engineering major Kyle MacDonald (Pennsbury) was named to the Capital one CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 Team. The Pennsbury grad is now eligible for Academic All-America honors this year. MacDonald, one of Penn State’s central midfielders, has played in all 15 games this year, logging 887 minutes in 13 starts. His greatest contribution this season came with a game-winning goal Sept. 21 over Ohio State, his second career tally. MacDonald has four points on the season on a goal and two assists to go along with nine shots. In the classroom, he holds a 3.83 cumulative GPA while majoring in architectural engineering. MacDonald is a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honoree and a member of the 2012 and 2013 Academic All-Big Ten Teams. The Academic All-District honor is the first for MacDonald, who became the first Nittany Lion named to the team since 2010. Academic All-America selections are announced in mid-November.
Austin Transue (Neshaminy) scored twice to lead Bloomsburg to a 2-0 win over Washington Adventist University on Tuesday.
Marywood University freshman forward Dylan McMahon (North Penn) was selected as the Corvias/Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week for the week ending Oct. 26. McMahon, who also was named the CSAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, scored two goals and had an assist to lead the Pacers to a 2-0 week. He scored the go-ahead goal in a 4-1 win over Keystone. McMahon followed that up with a three-point performance in a 3-0 win at Gwynedd Mercy. He scored unassisted in the 11th minute and lofted an assist for a header on the ensuing goal.
Penn State Abington senior goalkeeper Dan Saint-Pol (Pennridge) earned third team All-Conference honors in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Saint-Pol played in 13 games and came up with 45 saves for a 0.692 save percentage with a 1.46 goals against average on the year.
Saint-Pol was forced to make two saves in Penn State Abington’s 1-0 shutout win over Wells College on Saturday.
Sophomore Dan Caya (Pennridge) scored a goal in La Salle’s 5-0 win over St. Bonaventure on Friday night, heading a corner kick inside the left post for his first goal of the season. Matt Robinson (North Penn) and Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) both contributed an assist.
Kyle Parkinson (Hatboro-Horsham) scored a goal in Shippensburg’s 6-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Friday.
Tyler Sablyak (Central Bucks West) contributed an assist in Lock Haven’s 5-1 loss to No. 8 Mercyhurst on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Holy Family University senior women’s soccer midfielder Kimber Kisselback (Neshaminy) was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District 1 first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members in the East Region. As a first team selection, Kisselback is now eleigible for the Capital One Academic All-America team, which will be announced later in November. This marks the first time in her career that Kisselback has earned Academic All-District honors. In the classroom, Kisselback is a math education major and boasts a 3.33 cumulative grade point average. The Capital One Academic All-District teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom. It has been a career year for Kisselback as she has set new career highs in a number of categories this season. She has set new career marks in goals (8), points (21), shots (67), shots on goal (36) and game-winning scores (5). Her five game-winning goals leads the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACA), and she ranks second in shots, fifth in assists with five, sixth in points and seventh in goals. Kisselback has helped lead the Tigers to a 10-5-0 record this season and a 9-3-0 mark in conference play. Holy Family will be making its 16th straight appearance in the tournament and will host sixth-seeded Georgian Court University on Monday, Nov. 3, in quarterfinal action. Thus far in her career, Kisselback has totaled 17 goals, 16 assists and 50 points.
Kisselback had her fifth assist of the season in Holy Family’s 3-1 loss to Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday. Kisselback has a team high 21 points this season (eight goals/five assists).
Grace Miorelli (Souderton) scored a goal in Cedarville’s 3-1 loss to Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference quarterfinals. Cedarville will await pairings for the NCCAA Midwest Regional.
Junior goalie Megan Gerhart (North Penn) recorded three saves in Virginia Wesleyan’s 2-0 win over Roanoke on Saturday. It was the Marlins 10th shutout of the season, and Gerhart improved her goals against average to 0.88 and her save percentage to .807. In Tuesday’s 5-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win at Randolph-Macon, rookie Zoe Traficante (Central Bucks West) contributed an assist, and Gerhart recorded two saves.
Jeannie Jasinski (Pennridge) scored an overtime goal in Ursinus College’s 2-1 win over regionally-ranked Muhlenberg on Saturday.
Penn State Abington sophomore Kayla Nolan (Abington) was named first team All-North Eastern Athletic Conference. The senior forward led the Nittany Lions in points. She finished the regular season with 17 goals and two assists for 36 points in 17 games played. Her 17 goals were good for third in the NEAC. Her 36 points placed her fifth among all conference players.
Penn State junior defender Cindy Wade (Abington) was named Second Team All-North Eastern Athletic Conference. Wade had three goals and one assist in 17 games played.
Carly Yost (North Penn) scored her seventh goal of the year in West Chester’s 2-1 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday. West Chester claimed the top spot in the latest Atlantic Regional Rankings last Wednesday.
Alyssa Kirk (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Temple’s 2-1 loss to SMU in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament Friday.
Freshman Megan Schafer (Neshaminy) began a passing sequence that featured three freshmen and resulted in the game winner in No. 6 Penn State’s 1-0 win over Maryland on Thursday. Penn State, the 2014 Big Ten champion, will travel to Purdue for the Big Ten Tournament, which will begin Wednesday.
Junior Caitlin Sheehan (Pennridge) delivered a cross that set up a goal in Shippensburg’s 3-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Friday.
Tyalor Gerstenfield (William Tennent) made a save to preserve the tie in Bloomsburg’s 0-0 double overtime tie with Lock Haven on Saturday.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Rick Sutton (Hatboro-Horsham) won three events in Albright’s 131-131 tie with Widener on Saturday. Sutton won the 100 backstroke (55.96), the 200 backstroke (2:01.90) and the 500 freestyle (5:11.56).
Tim Ware (Central Bucks South) was part of the University of Delaware’s second place 400 medley relay team that posted a time of 3:28.79 in Session I of the CAA Pod Meet at UNCW’s Seahawk Natatorium on Saturday.
Andrew Richey (William Tennent) captured first place in the 50 freestyle (21.71) in IUP’s 135-66 win over Shippensburg on Saturday.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Junior diver Natalee Szopo (Upper Moreland) finished first in the three-meter event (272.78) in Towson’s quad-meet sweep of the College of Charleston (251-95), Northeastern (230-118) and George Mason (222-126) on Saturday. She finished second in the one-meter event with a score of 270.90.
Senior Ellie Houser (Upper Dublin) finished first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.86 in Gettysburg College’s 142-54 win at Bryn Mawr College on Saturday. She also was part of the winning 200 medley relay that finished with a time of 1:55.49.
Junior Carolyn Meier (Upper Dublin) captured first in the 200 IM (2:16.23) and 500 free (5:26.57) in Shippensburg’s dual meet wins over Fairmont State (153-41) and host California (118-84) on Friday evening. She also was part of the winning 400 free relay that posted a time of 3:43.27. In Saturday’s 121-79 loss to IUP, Meier hit conference cuts in the 100 free (55.16) and 200 free (2:01.81). Meier finished second in the 100 free.
Alex Wheatley (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 400 medley relay that posted a time of 4:00.38 in Bloomsburg’s 161-101 win over West Chester in Saturday’s season opener.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Cabrini junior Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) was named the CabriniAthletics.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 26. Koenig led the Blue and White to three victories. She recorded the 2,811st assist in the final set in Cabrini’s 3-1 win over Neumann, breaking the school record set by Lizzie Williams (2006-09) for career assists. The junior leads the team with 708 assists and ranks second in the Colonial State Athletic Conference with 8.43 assists per set.
Koenig had 28 assists in Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Dickinson in the first match of Saturday’s tri-match. She had 34 assists in Cabrini’s 3-1 loss to Franklin & Marshall. The loss in the team’s regular season finale snapped an 18-match winning streak. In Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Notre Dame of Maryland University, Koenig had 25 assists.
Freshman Melanie Ingram (Upper Merion) recorded a season-high 21 kills in Holy Family’s 3-1 loss to Philadelphia University on Wednesday. Senior Devyn Ingram (Upper Merion) had six kills to go along with 37 set assists and 12 digs.
Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) had 17 kills in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-1 win over Cabrini in the first match of Saturday’s tri-match. She finished with an impressive .680 hitting percentage. In F&M’s 3-1 win over Dickinson, Harvey led the Diplomats with 11 kills. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Gettysburg, Harvey had 12 kills and a .444 hitting percentage. The Diplomats are the five seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs and will travel to Johns Hopkins on Wednesday.
Senior Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had 10 kills in UConn’s 3-1 loss to Memphis on Sunday afternoon. In Friday’s 3-2 win at Cincinnati, Maugle notched a match-high 15 kills and also had 16 digs en route to her second straight double-double performance.
Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) put down 13 kills on a .242 hitting percentage and added three blocks in Kutztown’s 3-1 win over Shippensburg on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-2 loss to Millersville, Stringer had 10 kills and five blocks. In Tuesday’s 3-0 win over East Stroudsburg, Stringer had seven kills.
