MEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior forward Dave Knox (Central Bucks South) had a career high six steals in Washington College’s 86-46 loss to William & Mary on Friday. In Wednesday’s 88-82 loss to Muhlenberg, Knox scored a career-best 28 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the floor and connecting on 8-of-11 free throws. Senior guard Sean Brooks (North Penn) had five assists and three steals to tie for game best to go along with 13 points.
Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had eight points and five assists in Randolph-Macon’s 74-69 win over Averett on Thursday. In Tuesday’s 105-92 win over Cabrini, Badger had 12 points.
Freshman guard Matthew Alden (William Tennent) had six points – including a slam dunk with 2:05 left to give Ursinus a 50-47 lead – in the Bears’ 58-56 win over Rosemont on Saturday.
Senior Sam Pygatt (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a season-high nine points that included a 5-of-6 effort at the free throw line in Sihppensburg’s 80-62 loss to Slippery Rock on Wednesday.
Josh Johnson (Norristown) battled foul trouble in the first half but finished with 12 points in 21 minutes in Kutztown’s 73-69 loss to Slippery Rock on Saturday. He also had two blocks and four rebounds. In Wednesday’s 69-49 win over California (Pa.), Johnson led the Golden Bears with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting. He has shot 31-for-44 (.705) from the field in the last five games. He also led the team with nine rebounds. In Tuesday’s 72-66 win over Seton Hill, Johnson notched his third double-double of the season and his first since Nov. 25 with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. He also tallied two assists.
Sophomore guard Anthony McKie (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 17 points in Bloomsburg’s 86-76 loss at Clarion on Tuesday.
Senior guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 19 points and set the tone with three three-pointers in the first three minutes to lead East Stroudsburg to a 100-57 win over Pitt-Johnstowne on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 85-56 win at Clarion, Grant scored nine points. He moved into ESU’s career top 10 in assists (280). He also ranks third in career points (1,593). Grant is the only player in program history to rank in the career top 10 in both points and assists.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Tyra Roberts (Bensalem) was 3-for-3 from the foul in overtime in Alvernia’s 87-81 overtime win over Misericordia on Monday. She finished the game with 18 points.
Junior Ciara ‘CC’ Andrews (Cheltenham) scored 15 points in St. Joe’s 64-50 loss to #5/4 Notre Dame on Sunday in South Bend.
Senior center Emily Leer (Abington) had 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and a 2-of-3 effort from three-point range in Villanova’s 72-49 loss to Sacred Heart on Saturday. In last Sunday’s 70-36 win over La Salle, Leer, who made her season debut, had seven points and four rebounds in 12 minutes.
Junior Steph Knauer (North Penn) had nine points and six rebounds in Shippensburg’s 69-62 loss to Edinboro on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 86-48 win over Slippery Rock, Knauer tied her career high with 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field and an 8-of-10 performance from the free throw line. In the first half, Knauer was 7-of-11 from the field (63.6 percent) while Slippery Rock shot 6-of-29 (20.7 percent) as a team. In Tuesday’s 62-47 loss to No. 23 California, Knauer had eight points and four rebounds as she managed just five shot attempts in the contest and was 4-of-5 overall (3-of-3 in the first half).
Senior Natasha Matthews (Norristown) scored 16 points and also had 11 rebounds in Gwynedd Mercy’s 72-68 loss to Juniata on Saturday. In Monday’s 65-55 loss to Catholic, Matthews had eight rebounds.
Freshman Allison Gallagher (Souderton) had seven points in Widener’s 75-53 loss to Stevenson on Tuesday.
Senior guard Shayla Felder (Cheltenham) scored six consecutive points and finished with eight points and four assists in Chestnut Hill’s 56-40 win over Dowling College on Friday.
Freshman Ashlee Ruzicka (Quakertown) notched career highs of six points and five rebounds in Lycoming’s 83-61 win over Penn College last Sunday.
Junior Emily O’Donnell (William Tennent) had 10 points and 10 rebounds in Albright’s 63-52 loss to Elizabethtown on Thursday.
Junior forward Carley Kendall (Souderton) battled through foul trouble to score 11 points and bring down six rebounds in 18 minutes of play in Washington College’s 59-46 win over St. Mary’s College of Maryland on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 82-51 loss to Muhlenberg, Kendall had nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Sophomore guard Rachel Falkowski (Central Bucks South) scored a career-high eight points and had four steals in East Stroudsburg’s 82-67 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
California University (Pa.) senior Jack Abercrombie (Hatboro-Horsham) was named the 2014 Rimington Award winner. This award recognizes the most outstanding centers in the NCAA’s FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA. The Rimington Award is named after Dave Rimington, the only two-time winner of the Outland Trophy in addition to back-to-back first team All-American selections for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Abercrombie, the NCAA Division II winner, is the first player in school history to receive the Rimington Award. He started all 10 games this season at center and finished his career with 34 starts, including 32 consecutive starts. The 6-2 senior anchored an offensive line that helped Cal U average 447.6 yards of total offense and 38.1
points per game. Abercrombie has garnered many postseason awards as a student athlete. He was named to the D2football.com All-American team, the Capital One Academic All-District team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA) and was also a two-year team captain. Absercrombie received All-PSAC status in each of the last three seasons. He received second team honors in 2012 while playing right guard before earning first team accolades at center in each of the last two years. Abercrombie played eight games as a true freshman in 2011 with a start at both center and left guard. The following year, he started all 11 games with 10 starts at right guard following the graduation of All-American Rishaw Johnson, who has been with multiple NFL teams. Abercrombie then shifted to center in 2013 following the selection of All-American Eric Kush in the NFL Draft. Abercrombie is pursuing a degree in education with a concentration in mathematics.
MEN’S SOCCER
La Salle senior George Breslin (William Tennent) was named NSCAA Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention. The Tennent grad enjoyed a breakout 2014 campaign, appearing in 14 games (11 starts) as a defender after walking on to the team in 2012. Breslin scored a game-tying goal in the win over Stetson and tallied an assist in the draw with Temple. Breslin carries a 3.76 GPA as an accounting major.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Zachary Nees (North Penn) finished fourth in the Senior Men 1 meter diving finals at the USA Diving Winter National Championships with a score of 813.40. Ian
Forlini (William Tennent) was 17th in the Senior Men 1M finals.
Gettysburg senior co-captain Sean Staerk (Abington) captured the bronze in the 100 free with a time of 46.49 at the Centennial Conference Championships last weekend. Sophomore Ian Scullion (Central Bucks South) placed seventh in the 1,650 free with a time of 16:45.69. The men’s team won the title for the fourth year in a row.
Eric Jensen (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 400 medley relay in Buffalo’s win over Canisius on Thursday.
Andrew Richey (William Tennent) was part of the 200 free relay that broke a pool record in IUP’s 129-66 win over Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday. Richey also broke the pool record in the 50 free with a time of 21.67 and was part of the winning 400 medley relay.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Eve Rosten (North Penn) was part of the winning 400 medley relay in Buffalo’s win over cross-town rival Canisius on Thursday.
WRESTLING
Ursinus senior Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) is ranked third in the 157-pound weight class according to National Wrestling Coaches Association, which released its rankings last week. Jasinski is coming off a week where he won his weight class at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational and has posted a perfect 5-0 mark with all the wins coming in the tournament at Messiah.
