BASEBALL
Delaware Valley College sophomore centerfielder Kyle Wenger (Souderton) was selected to the 2015 D3baseball.com Preseason All-America Team as an honorable mention pick. Wenger is coming off an outstanding rookie year that saw him start all 36 games for the Aggies. He placed in the top 15 in all of Division III in three separate categories. He was third in batting (.479), fourth in on-base percentage (.551) and 12th in slugging (.744). Wenger’s other numbers included team highs in hits (56), RBIs (33), stolen bases (18), doubles (13) and triples (3). Wenger’s four home runs tied him for team-high honors while his 32 runs scored tied him for second on the squad. He picked up at least one hit in 33 of the 36 games, including 22 of the last 23 contests. Wenger also recorded 17 multiple-hit games, 10 multiple-RBI games and nine multiple-run games. He was the Rookie of the year and a first team selection for both the Freedom Conference and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (South Region). Wenger also was named to a pair of all-region first teams by D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
Freshman Jason Mulvey (Bensalem) had a pair of hits in his collegiate debut in Gwynedd Mercy’s 13-6 loss to Salisbury last Saturday. David Blount (Harry S Truman) singled and scored, and Brett Kozlowski (William Tennent) contributed an RBI single.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior forward Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a monster game on the boards with a game-high 16 rebounds in Temple’s 66-53 win over East Carolina on Saturday. The win was Temple’s seventh straight. In Tuesday’s 75-59 win over Cincinnati, Bond hit 8-of-11 shots from the field, including 6-of-6 in the second half to finish with 16 points.
With the score tied and time in regulation winding down in Saturday’s showdown against No. 18 Butler, Villanova junior Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) had the ball at the top of the key. A pump fake drew a second defender to him, and he used that opening to feed a wide open Darrun Hillard, who drained a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds to give No. 6 Villanova a 68-65 lead that was its final margin of victory. Arcidiacono did not score but dished out five assists in the big win. In Wednesday’s 74-68 win at Providence, Arcidiacono scored 20 points to lead the Wildcats.
Washington College junior Dave Knox (Central Bucks South) was named Shoreman of the Week for the week ending Feb. 10. The CB South grad scored 19 points and hauled down 10 rebounds in the Shoremen’s 81-80 upset of 16th-ranked Franklin & Marshall. Knox shot 6-for-11 from the field, 2-for-3 from three-point range and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Earlier in the week, he scored 12 points in a 65-61 loss to McDaniel.
Knox had 16 points and had a contest-best three steals tied for game-high in rebounds with six in Washington College’s 94-85 win over Ursinus on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 75-69 loss to Haverford, Knox finished with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Wes Brooks (North Penn) scored nine points and had a career-high six assists in McDaniel’s 78-73 win over No. 9 Dickinson on Wednesday.
Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had 11 points and six assists in fourth-ranked Randolph-Macon’s 74-66 win over Randolph on Saturday. The win was a program record 18th consecutive victory. In Wednesday’s 79-65 win over Hampden-Sydney, Badger recorded a career-best 14 assists.
Freshman Aaron Burton (Cheltenham) blocked a last second three-point attempt, helping DeSales University hang on for a 65-63 win over Wilkes University on Wednesday. Senior Travis Bryan (Hatboro-Horsham) was there for the loose ball rebound as time expired. Burton finished the game with 11 points while Bryan had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Junior guard Alex Agyeda (Bensalem) recorded his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds in Penn State Abington’s 100-91 loss to Penn State-Berks on Wednesday.
Kutztown sophomore Josh Johnson (Norristown) was named the PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 8. Johnson led the Golden Bears to two wins and helped KU clinch a winning season and a berth in the PSAC playoffs. He averaged 23.5 points and nine rebounds per game last week and shot an outstanding 21-for-25 (.840) from the field. The 6-8 forward scored a career-high 30 points and shot 14-for-14 from the field versus Cheney. His perfect percentage led KU to a school record 65.4 shooting percentage from the field, and his 14 field goals without a miss marked the most by a Golden Bear through the last 34 years. He is KU’s first 30-point scorer. Johnson’s 14-for-14 performance marks the best output in all NCAA divisions in the last seven seasons, dating back through the 2008-09 year and the best in Division II in the last eight seasons. Against Cheyney, Johnson also notched his sixth double-double of the season with a game-high 14 defensive rebounds. Against Millersville, Johnson scored a game-high 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting. He grabbed four rebounds with two blocks and two steals in 34 minutes. Johnson is second on the team with 14.4 points per game and 13th in the PSAC. He leads the team with seven rebounds per game (10th in PSAC).
Johnson finished just short of a double-double with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds in Kutztown’s 67-51 win over Shippensburg on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 84-82 loss at Lock Haven, Johnson contributed 12 points and eight rebounds.
Anthony Moe (Souderton) scored 20 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked two shots for his second consecutive double-double and fourth in 11 games in Millersville’s 78-71 loss to Lock Haven on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 85-78 overtime win over Cheyney, Moe posted 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Senior guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed seven points and five assists in East Stroudsburg’s 91-73 win over Cheyney on Saturday. The PW grad surpassed Duane Johnson (2009-13) for the most career minutes at ESU in the last 25 years with 3,268 (Johnson played 3,267). He also moved into third at ESU with 191 career steals, breaking the previous mark of 188.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Tyra Roberts (Bensalem) contributed 18 points and 17 rebounds in Alvernia’s 62-45 loss to Stevenson on Wednesday.
Junior forward Carley Kendall (Souderton) had an impressive all-around game with 10 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and three assists in Washington College’s 59-44 win over Ursinus College on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 62-45 loss to Haverford, Kendall paced the Shorewomen with a game-high 17 points.
Freshman Kaitlin Kelly (Pennsbury) contributed eight points off the bench in DeSales University’s 82-53 loss to No. 4 FDU-Florham on Saturday.
Emily O’Donnell (William Tennent) contributed nine points in Albright’s 74-62 road win at Messiah on Wednesday. The win snapped a 17-game losing streak at Messiah.
Senior Natasha Matthews (Norristown) contributed 13 points and nine rebounds in Gwynedd Mercy’s 73-41 win over Cedar Crest on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 75-43 loss to Immaculata, Matthews scored 11 points.
Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) scored 12 points and also pulled down eight rebounds in Shippensburg’s 68-66 win over Kutztown on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 65-49 win at Mansfield, Knauer had 10 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
Jessica Schmidt (Abington) had four points and 14 rebounds in Penn State Abington’s 60-31 loss to Cazenovia on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 82-40 win over Penn State-Berks, Schmidt recorded nine points and 13 rebounds. In Tuesday’s 67-39 win over SUNY Cobleskill, Mallory Mugneir (Abington) had a career high 11 points and three steals.
Alex Wheatley (Council Rock South) netted a game-high 18 points in 16th-ranked Princeton’s 56-50 win over Yale on Saturday. In Friday’s 86-58 win over Brown, Wheatley scored 11 points.
Amie Eppolito (Pennsbury) scored a team-high 15 points in Cairn University’s 71-31 loss to Keystone College on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 66-58 loss to Baptist Bible, Eppolito scored a season-high 27 points.
Ciara ‘CC’ Andrews (Cheltenham) scored 13 points in St. Joseph’s 82-64 loss to Dayton on Sunday.
Freshman Allison Gallagher (Souderton) scored a team-high 16 points and a game-high five assists in Widener’s 68-62 loss to Hood on Wednesday. She shot 7-of-17 from the field and added five rebounds in 40 minutes played.
Senior center Emily Leer (Abington) scored 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting (2-of-3 from three) in Villanova’s 63-52 win over Butler on Friday. The Abington grad has now scored in double figures in 12 of 17 games she has played in this year. In last Sunday’s 64-48 win over Georgetown, Leer scored 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting (4-of-6 from beyond the arc).
Senior guard Shayla Felder (Cheltenham) scored 20 points and also had three assists and two steals in Chestnut Hill’s 82-73 win over Philadelphia University on Tuesday. The Cheltenham grad went 7-for-8 from the line to ice a win that snapped a 17-game skid in the series and avenged an 80-49 rout at the hands of Philadelphia University earlier in the season. In Saturday’s 73-68 loss to Post, Felder paired five assists with seven points.
Junior guard Helena Gemmell (Council Rock North) scored 11 points in East Stroudsburg’s 69-60 win over Cheyney on Saturday.
SOFTBALL
Lehigh junior Morgan Decker (Central Bucks South) began and ended the 2014 season with Patriot League major awards. The CB South grad has been recognized once again as she was named the Patriot League’s Player of the Year as the league announced its preseason poll, major awards and all-league teams. Decker, Lehigh’s junior third baseman, has been the postseason Player of the Year in each of her first two seasons at Lehigh. Last year, Decker batted .412 with nine home runs, 12 doubles, 39 RBIs and 32 walks. She led the Patriot League in home runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, walks and hit-by-pitch. In two seasons, Decker is a .414 hitter with 18 home runs and 85 RBIs. She enters her junior season seven homers shy of Lehigh’s career record. As a team, Lehigh tied with Bucknell for second place in the Patriot League’s preseason poll.
Ashley Alden (William Tennent) collected a pair of hits in St. Joseph’s 8-4 win over UMBC on the final day of
the Landfall Park Hampton Inns Invitational on Saturday. In Friday’s 13-2 win over UMBC in six innings, Nikki Alden (William Tennent) connected for her first collegiate home run – a grand slam – in the sixth to bring an early end to the game. The freshman outfielder had a pair of hits and scored three runs. She also had a stolen base. Ashley Alden scored two runs and also picked up an RBI.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Albright senior Rick Sutton (Hatboro-Horsham) was the top qualifier in the 200 freestyle in a career best time of 1:43.78 at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships on Saturday. In the finals later that day, Sutton finished second with a time of 1:43.86. Teammate Tim Resch (Springfield) was part of the 200 free relay team that finished sixth overall in a time of 1:28.49. Resch finished 17th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.52.
Washington & Jefferson’s Kevin Dunigan (North Penn) bested his own school record in the 200 breaststroke by nearly two seconds with his fourth place time of 2:08.15 in the final event of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday. Ben Mancini (Springfield) finished fifth in the 1650 free with a time of 17:00.62. On Friday, Dunigan shattered the school mark in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.41, more than a second-and-a-half faster than the previous mark set in 2003. Dunigan’s NCAA B-Cut time was also good enough for second place in the event. Jake Meyers (Council Rock North) finished seventh in the 200 free while Mancini was 15th. On Thursday, Dunigan was part of the 200 free relay that broke a six-year-old school record with a time of 1:25.72. Mancini was fifth in the 500 freestyle (4:48.21) while Meyers took eighth (5:03.72).
Lycoming senior TJ Guminski (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 12th with a time of 4:29.60 in the 400 individual medley at the Middle Atlantic Conference championships on Saturday. His time was the fourth best in program history.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Liz Muller (Central Bucks West) was part of Albright’s fifth place 200 free relay that posted a time of 1:41.55 in the final day of the Middle Atlantic Conference championships on Saturday.
Rachel Engelhardt (Hatboro-Horsham) was part of Elizabethtown’s 800 free relay that posted a time of 8:29.24 to finish fifth at the Landmark Conference Championships on Saturday. Molly Templin (Abington) posted her season best time in the 200 free, and Amanda Robbins (Cheltenham) posted a season-best time of 1:16.32 in the 100 butterfly. On Friday, Engelhardt finished 15th in the 500 freestyle while Templin cracked 30 seconds in the 50 free for the first time in her career with a 29.89.
Lycoming sophomore Jess Wimmer (Souderton) was part of the 800 free relay that broke the school record with a time of 8:09.31, breaking the previous mark of 8:12.59 by more than three seconds, at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships on Thursday. In the process, the team finished sixth to earn Second Team All-MAC honors. On Saturday, Wimmer won the consolation final in the 400 individual medley, finishing ninth in 4:58.40.
Marist freshman Megan Berardelli (Wissahickon) finished second in the 1-meter dive event with 247.85 points at the 2015 MAAC Championships. She also finished second in the 3-meter dive with 255.75 points.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
IUP’S Austin Cooper (Upper Merion) finished with a season-best time of 1:53.62 in the 800 meters at the NCAA Division II Team Challenge last Saturday.
Pitt freshman Chris Spadaro (Council Rock South) was ninth overall in the long jump (6.84m) on the final day of action at the SPIRE Invitational on Saturday.
Johns Hopkins senior Michael Spadaro (Council Rock South) posted a season-best time of 9.08 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles in the Boston University Valentine Invitational on Saturday.
Shippensburg junior Jalen Ramsey (Norristown) won the high jump at Boston University’s David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday, clearing 6 feet, 10 ¾ inches along with one other competitor but doing so with fewer misses. Ramsey cleared the bar at 6-2 ¾ and 6-4 ¾ on his first attempt at each height. He needed three attempts to jump 6-6 ¾ but then cleared 6-8 ¾ on his first attempt. Ramsey achieved his final height on his second attempt. He was one-quarter inch shy of his season PR (6 feet, 11 inches) that currently has him tied for eighth on the Division II performance list.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Byron Coleman (Plymouth Whitemarsh) finished fifth out of 52 competitors in the high jump with a leap of 6.57 meters (21-6 ¾) at the Susquehanna Invitational on Saturday. It was his second best jump of the season. Ben Keliojor (Norristown) was part of the 4×200 relay that finished fourth out of 16 teams with a time of 1:34.45.
Ron Smith (Neshaminy) was part of Kutztown’s 4×400 relay that posted a season-best time of 3:22.55 for 32nd overall at Boston University’s David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday. Brandon Raguz (Central Bucks South) finished 22nd in the pole vault at 13-11.25, which is an existing PSAC height.
Shawn Young (Central Bucks West) was part of West Chester’s first place 4×400 relay that recorded a time of 3:23.24 at the Susquehanna Invitational on Saturday. He also was part of the fifth place 4×200 relay. Chris Stancil (Bensalem) finished fifth in the 400 meter.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Messiah’s Tiffany Burrows (Quakertown) took first place in the 300 meter dash with a time of 43.36 – an improvement of her own college record – at Dickinson College on Saturday. Messiah finished first as a team. Teammate Natalie Ross (Souderton) took third in the 1000 meter run with a time of 3:21.36.
University of Pittsburgh freshman Melanie Vlasic (North Penn) was part of the women’s distance medley relay team that ran a season-best time of 11:56.47 at the SPIRE Invitational on Friday.
Kutztown freshman Anecia Alexaki (Upper Merion) posted a season-best mark of 10-11.75 in the high jump at Boston University’s David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday. The height was good for eighth at KU and seventh in the PSAC this season.
Lindsay Sheehan (Pennridge) was part of Shippensburg’s 4×400 relay team that broke the PSAC all-time indoor record on Friday at Boston University’s David Hemery Valentine Invitational, posting a time of 3:50.75 and breaking the school record set last year. The time is more than seven seconds faster than any other SU 4×4 relay this season (SU ran 3:58.12 at Penn State). It’s also nearly five full seconds faster than the PSAAC’s previous best 4×4 relay of the season (Slippery Rock ran 3:55.48 last week at Youngstown State). The previous PSAC indoor record (3:51.92) was set by California in 2011. Sheehan ran a season best 25.84 in the 200 meters, a time that slots her fifth in the PSAC rankings.
Temple sophomore Sydnee Jacques (North Penn) finished 10th with a distance of 11.90m in the long jump at Boston University’s Valentine Invitational on Friday.
Gwynedd Mercy senior AnaLee Rodriguez (Pennsbury) finished 17th out of 47 in the shot put with a throw of 10.41 meters (34’2) at the Susquehanna Invitational on Saturday. It was a season best for Rodriguez. Freshman Emily Makara (Council Rock South) finished with a season best of 5:47.20, placing 29th out of 52 in the one-mile run.
Moravian freshman Casie Cronk (Quakertown) finished ninth in high jump with a leap of 1.52 meters (4-11 ¾) at the Susquehanna University Invitational on Saturday.
West Chester’s Dara Lindsey (Central Bucks East) finished third in the 400 meter dash at the Susquehanna Invitational on Saturday. Lindsey, Moira Fox (Central Bucks West), Ebony Grasty (Wissahickon), andDanielle Kuhn (Central Bucks East) comprised the 4×200 relay that captured third place with a time of 1:49.82. Christine Johnson (North Penn) finished fifth in the weight throw. Emily Dusellier (Souderton) took sixth in the 800 meter run, and Emily Magnant (Hatboro-Horsham) was sixth in the 200 meter dash.
Bloomsburg University senior Kate Dodds (Upper Dublin) earned PSAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors for the week ending Feb. 8. Dodds broke the school record in the 3,000 meters at the Youngstown State National Invite in Ohio with an NCAA provisional time of 9:54.11, good enough for the win in the event. Her time narrowly beat the previous school record of 9:54.95 set by former Bloomsburg All-American Vicki Davis. The previous day, Dodds was part of a new school record in the distance medley relay that posted a time of 12:02.44, also an NCAA provisional mark. The old school record was 12:12.71.
Dodds was part of Bloomsburg’s distance medley relay team that ran a 12:03.35, which is an NCAA provisional time and will rank among the top 15 in the country this year on Friday at the Bucknell Tune Up. Keelan McDonald (Central Bucks West) and Jessica Quesenberry (Wissahickon) posted PSAC qualifying times in the 3000 meters with times of 10:47.53 and 10:48.29 respectively.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Ryan Garven (Council Rock North) had nine kills in Cairn University’s 3-2 loss to Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Stevenson, Gaven took the court for the first time this season after being out with an injury and made his presence felt with six kills hitting out of the front and back rows. In Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Rutgers-Newark, Andy Willits (North Penn) had six kills and led the team in digs with three.
WRESTLING
Joe Stolfi (Souderton) notched a first-period pin that was the 50th of his career in Bucknell’s 25-13 win over Army on Saturday, tying a school record that has stood for 15 years. The win was Bucknell’s 10th in a row. In Friday’s 33-6 win over Franklin & Marshall, Stolfi recorded a pin –his 17th of the season. It was his 19th straight victory.
Ursinus College’s Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) was the runner-up at 157 at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. The Pennridge grad defeated Brandon Carcuffe of Gettysburg by pin in 4:16 and then defeated Christian Salera of Johns Hopkins by major decision 9-1 before falling to Michael Polizzi of Stevens Tech in the final match by a 4-3 score.
Matt Martoccio (Council Rock South) controlled his bout at 157 from start to finish and earned a 6-0 decision over Mike Springer (Norristown) for his 20th victory of the season in Kutztown’s 32-7 win over Shippensburg on Friday. In Saturday’s 38-9 win over Millersville, Martoccio earned a 3-2 decision over Shane Ruhnke.
