BASEBALL
Monmouth University freshman Justin Andrews (Neshaminy) was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 8. The left-handed pitcher fired three shutout innings out of the bullpen during the team’s second game of a doubleheader at East Carolina. He surrendered just two hits and struck out two, facing just one over the minimum. Andrews erased two of the three baserunners he allowed with a double play during the next at-bat.
Andrews threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief in Monmouth’s 3-0 win over VCU on Friday. He entered the game in the seventh with two outs and a pair of runners on board and the potential tying run at the plate. He recorded a strikeout to end the inning and then retired the next six batters he faced to record his first career save.
Ryan Henritzy (Council Rock North) went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in Lock Haven’s 8-1 win over Shippensburg in game one of a doubleheader sweep on Friday. In Tuesday’s 12-8 win over Penn State Berks in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Henritzy finished the day 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. In Monday’s 9-5 loss to Pfeiffer University, Henritzy was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Dylan Tice (Pennridge) had four hits in West Chester’s 23-9 win over Mansfield on Monday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Joey Nieves-Maree (Bensalem) had a pair of hits in Cairn University’s 18-6 loss to Medaille College last Sunday in Winter Haven, Fla.
Junior Daniel Chou (Wissahicon) had hits in both games of Caltech’s doubleheader sweep of Drew on Thursday, extending his hitting streak to nine games – the program’s longest streak in at least five years. “Chou is a clear leader for us both on the field and in the dugout,” coach Matthew Mark said. “Being in the leadoff spot, he has been a real table setter the last three games in particularly. He really sets the bar for the rest of the team in all three aspects.” The doubleheader sweep was the first over Drew since 2000, and Chou also picked up a win on the mound in Caltech’s 11-10 win in game one of the twinbill. He also had a big day at the plate in the win, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two stolen bases and three runs scored. He had a hit, RBI and run scored in Caltech’s 8-7 win in game two of the doubleheader.
Clay Sebesky (Central Bucks East) was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored in Kutztown’s 9-4 win over Barton College on Wednesday in Wilson, N.C. In Kutztown’s 6-5 win over Barton College on Tuesday, Brandon Martinez (North Penn) recorded a pair of hits.
Moravian College freshman pitcher Dan Morrin (Central Bucks East) was honored as the ECAC Division III South Rookie of the Week for his performance in his collegiate debut on the mound for the week ending March 8. Morrin, who was also selected as the Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Week, had a strong first start for the Greyhounds, earning the win in Moravian’s 8-5 victory over then No. 12 ranked Marietta (Ohio) College at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. Morrin pitched the first six innings of the game, and he scattered five hits while not allowing a base on balls. He recorded eight strikeouts and left the mound with the Hounds leading 8-0. “Dan tossed a great game in his first collegiate start,” said head coach Paul Engelhardt. “He was able to control the tempo of the game on the mound, and he had command of the strike zone from the first pitch. It says a lot about a freshman to come out that way against the caliber of team that Marietta is. He deserves a lot of credit. He was composed, he competed, and he gave us a great chance to get the victory. We are excited to have Dan with us for four years.”
Freshman Connor Laigiate (Council Rock South) earned the save in Arcadia’s 27-13 win over Hood College at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.
Ben Houser (Central Bucks East) contributed an RBI single in Northampton’s 5-4 win over Penn St. Mont Alto at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach on Monday. In Northampton’s 8-4 win over Southern Maine Community College on Thursday, Houser had a double and two runs scored.
Freshman Jason Mulvey (Bensalem) had three hits in Gwynedd Mercy’s 4-3 loss to Kean on Wednesday.
Trevor Dalton (Pennridge) improved to 2-0 after earning the win in Delaware Valley’s 5-3 win in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Hilbert College on Saturday to conclude the team’s spring break trip to Florida. He went five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. Kyle Wenger (Souderton) was 2-for-3. In Del Val’s 2-0 win in game one of the sweep, Bobby Altieri (Norristown) was 1-for-3 with an RBI. In Thursday’s 5-3 win over Bethany College, Wenger was 2-for-3 with an RBI. In Monday’s 7-6 win over Kenyon, Altieri was 4-for-5 with three runs scored. The leftfielder also gunned down a runner at the plate. Wenger was 3-for-4. In last Sunday’s 5-2 win over Martin Luther College, Wenger was 3-for-4 while Altieri had two hits and two RBIs. Dalton notched the win, throwing six innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits.
Penn State Abington freshman Matt Meyers (Cheltenham) was named the NEAC Baseball Player of the Week for the week ending March 8. Meyers started his career with a dominant performance against Penn State Altoona in Winter Park, Fla. The freshman posted a .625 batting average and 1.375 slugging. During game one of the doubleheader, Meyers went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, three RBIs, three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base in the 16-15 loss.
Max German (Council Rock North) was 4-for-5 with four RBIs in Penn State Abington’s 20-16 win over Juniata on Wednesday in Winter Haven, Fla. Trey Guaglionona (Abington) singled, scored a run and drove in a pair. Meyers was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. In Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Medaille, German tripled and scored while Meyers was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Anthony Pletscher (North Penn) singled and also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field. In Monday’s 12-10 loss to Beloit College, Meyers hit his third home run of the season. He finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI, three runs scored and a triple short of the cycle. German had a double and RBI, and Pat Fitzgerald (Central Bucks South) was 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and run scored.
Casey O’Donnell (Hatboro-Horsham) turned in five shutout innings and earned the win in Philadelphia University’s 3-0 win over Le Moyne on Friday. He fanned six and allowed just two hits to record his first win since the 2013 season. In Wednesday’s 5-4 loss to Millersville, Ken McCormick (Pennsbury) contributed a double.
Cody Stoneback (Quakertown) allowed just three hits, two walks and one run over four innings in Millersville’s 5-4 win over Philadelphia University. He was not involved in the decision and left with the Marauders in the lead.
Redshirt sophomore Casey Saverio (Hatboro-Horsham) had a double and two RBIs in East Stroudsburg’s 13-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown in game one of a doubleheader sweep on Monday.
Jared Schaffer (Pennridge) was credited with the win after working 3.2 innings of relief in Bloomsburg’s 16-10 win over California (Pa.) on Tuesday in Cary, N.C.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Villanova junior point guard Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) along with Providence’s Kris Dunn will share the 2015 BIG EAST Player of the Year Award. The two guards were key players on their teams this season, helping them to first and fourth place in the conference, respectively. Arcidiacono was Villanova’s second leading scorer, averaging 10.7 points per game on 40 percent shooting from the field. He handed out a team-high 3.6 assists per game and had just 1.5 turnovers per contest this season. In conference games, he averaged 12.9 points and 3.6 assists and played the most minutes of any Villanova player.
Arcidiacono sank a pair of free throws with 3.1 seconds remaining to give Villanova a 63-61 lead and a win by that score over Providence in the BIG EAST semifinals at Madison Square Garden on Friday. He finished with six points.
Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had 10 points and four assists in Randoph-Macon’s 64-57 win over St. John Fisher on Friday, extending its win streak to 25 games and advancing to the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament Sectional Finals.
Temple junior forward Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) received honorable mention American Athletic Conference all-conference recognition. Bond, one of three Philadelphia area transfers (Texas) new to the team this season, has been a defensive force inside, helping the Owl defense hold opponents to 59.9 points per game. The PW grad leads the conference in rebounding (8.3 per game) while ranking fourth on the squad with an 8.2 scoring average.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior Alex Wheatley (Council Rock South) was one of three Princeton players named to the 2014-15 Ivy League All-Conference first team. An honorable mention selection last year, Wheatley put together another stellar season. She led the conference in field goal percentage (57.7), she is third in blocks per game (1.4), third on the team in scoring (10.7), and she ranks second in rebounding (5.0). Named the Ivy Player of the Week on Feb. 2 after shooting 68.4 percent from the field while averaging 16.0 points and 4.5 rebounds against Harvard and Dartmouth, Wheatley has led the team in scoring eight times while pacing the squad in blocks on 14 occasions.
Wheatley was one of four Tigers in double figures with 17 points and 12 rebounds in 13th-ranked Princeton’s 55-42 win over Penn on Tuesday night. With the win, Princeton closed out the season with a 30-0 record, joining the Kentucky men as the only two undefeated NCAA Division One basketball teams in the nation. Heading to their fifth NCAA appearance in six seasons, the Tigers will learn of their tournament seeding and match-up when the full 64-team bracket is announced on Monday.
Emily O’Donnell (William Tennent) contributed 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench in Albright’s 81-58 loss to Lebanon Valley in the ECAC Championship game last Sunday.

Hannah Vogel (Hatboro-Horsham) had two goals and an assist in Millersville’s 15-7 loss to No. 3 Lindenwood on Sunday afternoon. Vogel now has 156 career points and needs another 28 to pass former teammate Brooke Fisher for sixth place on the Millersville career scoring list. In Thursday’s 17-15 win over Philadelphia University, Vogel contributed two goals and three assists.

Junior Ally Frymoyer (Upper Merion) made five saves in goal. In Thursday’s 18-11 loss to No. 15 Regis, Frymoyer had six saves and three ground balls. In Tuesday’s 11-10 loss to Shepherd, Grenfell scored one goal while Frymoyer was credited with nine saves.

In Tuesday’s 14-10 win at Wilmington, Green scored two goals while Rahmer had an assist.

In the Hawks’ 6-2 loss to Purdue in Saturday’s nightcap, Ashley Alden (William Tennent) hit a two-run home run. In Friday’s 5-3 win over UMass Lowell, Ashley Alden hit her team-leading fourth home run – a two-run shot in the fourth inning. In a pair of St. Joe’s wins on the final day of the Rebel Games in Winter Haven, Fla., Ashley Alden finished the day 4-for-7. In St. Joe’s 8-0 win over Niagara in five innings, Nikki Alden earned the win, allowing just three hits. Her sister Ashley was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. In St. Joe’s 6-5 win over South Dakota, Ashley Alden was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
Senior Liz Parkins (Souderton) threw a two-hit shutout and tied her career high with nine strikeouts in Shippensburg’s 1-0 win over Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. Parkins allowed a one-out single in the first inning before retiring 11 in a row. She threw just six first-pitch balls all day long, yielding two singles without a walk in an 89-pitch complete game. Seventy-two of her 89 pitches were strikes.

Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Nikki Canfield (Souderton) was selected as the CSAC Softball Hitter of the Week for the week ending March 8. Canfield batted .455, going 10-for-22 in eight games in Myrtle Beach on the team’s spring break trip that saw the Griffins go 5-3. She added six runs, four RBIs, three doubles, three walks, along with a .591 slugging and .520 on-base percentage. She reached base in all but two games. Her best performance came in the second game with John Jay when she went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a double and a walk.
Maria Spinosa (Hatboro-Horsham) and Danielle DiFilippo (Hatboro-Horsham) each had a hit, accounting for two of their team’s three hits in Millersville’s 2-1 win over Slippery Rock on Friday, the final day of the team’s nine-day, 15-game trip to Clermont, Fla. In Millersville’s 3-2 loss to Charleston on Friday, Gabbie Berry (Norristown) was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. In Wednesday’s 7-1 win in five innings over Lees-McRae, DiFilippo was 2-for-2 with two RBIs while Spinosa and Heather Lutz (Hatboro-Horsham) both contributed a single and run scored. In a pair of losses Tuesday to No. 15 Winona State (15-0) and Truman State (2-0), DiFilippo and Spinosa both had two hits. In Monday’s 10-4 win over Stonehill, DiFilippo was 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored while Berry was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Spinosa was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs while Lutz was 1-for-1 with an RBI. In Monday’s 5-2 win over Lees-McRae, DiFilippo tripled and contributed two RBIs. Stephanie Kulp (North Penn) was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Lutz was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

In West Chester’s 4-3 loss to Tiffin on Friday night, Laura Altenburger (Neshaminy) delivered a two-run single in the seventh that drew the Golden Rams within a run. She finished the day 2-for-4. In Thursday’s 8-1 win over Merrimack, Altenburger hit her second home run of the season. In Wednesday’s 8-0 win in five innings over Queens (N.Y.), Altenburger hit a three-run homer in the second inning. In the Golden Rams’ 4-3 loss to Charleston on Wednesday, Derstine had a pair of hits. In Monday’s 7-6 win over Urbana, Ali Vavala (Central Bucks East) tripled and scored.
Brooke Labs (Pennridge) had a pair of hits in Marywood’s 12-7 loss to New England College on Tuesday. In Monday’s 10-3 loss to New England College, Labs was 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored.
Freshman third baseman Rachel Hyman (Upper Dublin) contributed a sacrifice fly in Ursinus College’s 4-3 win over St. Joseph’s (L.I.) on Wednesday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. In Tuesday’s 12-5 win over SUNY Polytechnic, senior first baseman Ellen Goldstein (Central Bucks West) had two hits and two RBIs. In Monday’s 3-2 win over Mount Aloysius, Goldstein had two hits. In the Bears 4-1 win over MacMurray later in the day on Monday, Hyman had a pair of hits.

University of North Carolina junior Ozzie Moyer (Souderton) advanced to the final and finished 17th with a scored of 623.30 points in the 3-meter dive event at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships on Tuesday.
La Salle’s CJ Gimpel (Central Bucks South) competed in the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships at the University of Buffalo. In the one-meter springboard on Monday, Gimpel placed 33rd with a score of 239.65. On the three-meter board, he placed 40th with a score of 240.40. It was the first time competing in the NCAA qualifying meet for Gimpel. In total, 50 male divers represented 36 Division One institutions from Virginia through Massachusetts.
Penn State senior TJ Schenkel (Council Rock South) finished 12th in the three-meter diving event at the NCAA Zone A Diving Regionals hosted by the University of Buffalo. His 12-dive score of 641.45 put him just five spots out of contention for the NCAA Championships. He finished prelims in 13th with a 318.75. In the one-meter diving event, Schenkel finished 14th. The CR South grad tallied a 541.60 12-dive score during the final session, following his 271.30 mark in preliminaries earlier in the day. His 14th place finish was just seven off of where he would have needed to place to advance to the NCAA Championships. Still, his 2015 performance bested his output a year ago as he placed 21st in preliminaries during the 2014 Zones and was not eligible to compete in the finals.

Towson junior Natalee Szopo (Upper Moreland) placed 39th in the 3-meter dive at the NCAA Zone A Championships on Tuesday, posting a score of 216.35. The Upper Moreland grad placed 30th in the preliminaries with a score of 239.45.
University of Pittsburgh sophomore Rachel Saunders (Central Bucks West) finished 12th in the platform finals at the NCAA Zone A Diving on Wednesday with a score of 399.45. She finished 13th in the one-meter event with a finals score of 501.05.

Marist freshman Megan Berardelli (Wissahickon) finished 31st on the one-meter board with 224.50 points at the NCAA Zone A Qualifier Diving Championships on Tuesday. On the 3-meter board, Berardelli racked up 226.15 points for 39th place.

University of Pennsylvania junior Drew Magaha (Upper Moreland) was named to the All-Ivy second team for his performance at the Indoor Heptagonal Championships. It was the second straight such honor for Magaha, who finished as the runner-up in the 500 meters for the second year in a row.

Gwynedd Mercy junior Zakiyyah Richardson (Pennsbury) qualified for the finals of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.69 in the preliminary round at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at the JBL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Pennsbury grad finished fourth in her heat, but her time was good enough as the final entry into the finals. Richardson was the eighth fastest time, enabling her the last spot in the finals. This was her third appearance in the championships in the same event but the first time she has made it out of the qualifying heats.
Moravian’s Sarah Hughes (Souderton) was named to the Landmark Conference 2014-15 Winter Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all fall student-athletes of sophomore standing or older with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. The student-athlete must complete the fall season in good standing with their team.

Senior Scott Morantz (Neshaminy) had a team-high nine digs and recorded his first career kill in Stevenson’s 3-0 sweep of Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday night.

Kutztown redshirt junior Matt Martoccio (Council Rock South) wrapped up his first NCAA appearance in valiant form, coming home from the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championships at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis with the seventh place medal and All-America honors. In the seventh place bout at 157, Martoccio took on eighth-ranked Greg Hegarty from Maryville University. The CR South grad snagged a single-leg takedown in the first period and held on offense for 37 seconds before Hegarty managed to escape. Hegarty chose bottom for the second period, allowing Martoccio to surpass one minute of riding time. After an escape, Hegarty then evaded a shot from Martoccio and turned it into a takedown to take a 4-3 lead into the final period. Martoccio remained poised in the waning seconds, and with fewer than 10 ticks left on the clock, he latched onto the back of Hegarty’s ankles and forced him to the mat to regain the lead. His ample riding time gave him a 6-4 decision and seventh place.
