UPPER DUBLIN 14, WISSAHICKON 7
The Flying Cardinals got off to a quick start in Monday’s battle of American Conference unbeaten squads, opening up a 3-0 lead after one quarter and extending that to 9-2. They still led 9-4 at the intermission.
The Trojans shut out the Cards in the third quarter to make it a 9-6 game heading into the final frame.
“We got a little sloppy and made mistakes, and you can’t make those against a quality, well-coached team like Wissahickon,” UD coach JP Banks said. “They went on a four-goal run.
“They do a good job over there, and against good teams – you make mistakes, and it winds up in the back of your net. It’s minimizing your mistakes, and that’s what you’re going to have to do to compete at the next level. That’s something that we’ll have to focus on getting better at.”
The Cardinals outscored their visitors 5-1 in the final quarter for the 14-7 final.
“Any time you have Wissahickon-Upper Dublin, it’s a big game,” Banks said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s volleyball, basketball, whatever sport – with two neighboring teams, it’s always a clash.
“We always know we’re in for a dogfight. When the boys played to their potential, we looked great today.
Michael Sowers had a hand in eight goals, scoring one and assisting on seven others. Michael Mullen had a team-high four goals to go along with two assists, and Evan Scott had a hat trick.
Max Winebrake added a pair of goals while Nicholas Vernacchio and Paul Chung both had a goal and an assist. Zach Hanson and Connor Wall each added one goal.
“Evan Scott had a really nice game,” Banks said. “Nick Vernacchio played very well.
“As always, Jack Rapine picking the ball up and controlling the middle of the field really helps set the tone for us. Paul Chung struggled early on on face-offs, and then in the second quarter, he really came alive and really sparked us as well.”
For the Trojans, Eric Kaufmann had a big day, finishing with three goals and two assists. John Esposite added a pair of goals, and Jack Shea and John Carrozza both had one goal and one assist. Nate DeGroat chipped in with an assist to close out the scoring.
UD goalie Bobby McPeak was credited with seven saves while his counterpart, Jack Myers, had eight saves.
The Trojans gave the Cardinals their closest game since UD defeated Avon Grove 4-3 on March 28.
“We need to learn from the experience that we need to come out and play our best games when we’re playing the top of our conference and we’re facing the non-league teams we’ll be seeing throughout the rest of the year,” Banks said.
On Wednesday, the Flying Cardinals will play a Harverford School squad that is 10-0 and ranked number one in the country.
“It’s going to be a great experience for us,” Banks said. “We’re excited that they were willing to give us a game, and we’re looking forward to the opportunity.”
