Upper Moreland 4, Springfield 2
For those that are patient, good things will normally happen.
That is exactly what happened for Upper Moreland. The Golden Bears came into Monday’s action with just one win, and they were winless in the league. But to their credit, they never gave up and never got down on themselves, and they were rewarded for their hard work, picking up their first league victory.
“We gave away two wins to Upper Dublin and Wissahickon,” said Bears head coach Ken Irwin. “We have a good core group. We were waiting for this to happen.”
The Bears got off to the quick start, scoring twice in the first and third while holding the Spartans to single runs in the third and sixth.
The game against Springfield came at a perfect time for Upper Moreland.
“This is a team that we normally beat,” said Irwin. “No disrespect to Springfield, they are a good team. This is a huge load off our backs.”
The Bears basically have a brand new team on the field this season. They graduated 14 seniors from last year’s squad and feature eight new field players. The lone returning player is their DH.
“The group last year played all year long,” said Irwin.
While their offense has struggled at times this year, the Bears got a solid day at the plate from Christian Leighton, who had two of the team’s five hits and had three RBIs despite going through some difficult times off the diamond.
Leighton recently had missed some time at practice while his family put his grandmother into hospice care, but his grandfather and other family members were in attendance on Monday to help cheer him on.

Central Bucks East 6, Central Bucks South 4
The Patriots found a way to put it all together in picking up their first league win of the season, holding off a determined CB South squad.
The Patriots scored five times in the fifth to take the lead for good on Monday afternoon. The win evened the Patriots overall record at 2-2 and put them at 1-2 in the competitive Continental Conference.
“Any win is a good win,” said East head coach Kyle Dennis. “You cannot take off any games in our conference. There are some tough games.”
The Patriots opened the league schedule with tough losses to Pennridge and North Penn, two teams atop the standings, but according to their coach, the players never got down on themselves and approached each game as if it were their first.
“All of my teams battle,” said Dennis. “This is a tough conference. Anybody can beat anyone on any given day. We are getting a little bit better every game.”
Despite the offensive outburst of six runs, the name of the game on Monday was East’s pitching.
Michael Broderick was fantastic on the mound, going five-plus innings and allowing just two earned runs while striking out five in his first start of the year.
“He got the start today after pitching in a relief a couple of times,” said Dennis. “We have no power pitchers. No number one. We roll out six guys. He was ahead of the hitters today.”
At the plate, the big hit came off the bat of Collin Sheehan, who was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
