PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 10, CHELTENHAM 5 (11 innings)
Matt Cooper was an unlikely hero on the mound in Friday’s win.
The PW junior has seen a lot time at second base, but his pitching resume this season included only one inning of work, and that came in the final inning of PW’s 20-3 win over Upper Merion.
With the Colonials short on rested arms, Cooper entered the game in the bottom of the seventh after his team knotted the score in the top of the inning. He did not allow a hit in five shutout innings, fanning four and walking one.
“He was really forced into that role today, and he couldn’t have done any better,” coach Chris Manero said. “I think he’s always looked at himself as a pitcher.
“He’s grown up a lot over the years to the point where I think he thrives in those tough situations. I think he was eager to do it.”
Cooper’s stellar outing on the mound wouldn’t have happened if the Colonials hadn’t come up with some late-game heroics to erase a 5-3 deficit in the top of the seventh. A comeback seemed unlikely when the first two batters were retired on fly balls to center field, but Brett Highland was hit by the pitch, setting the stage for a dramatic two-run home run by Gavin Brody, who was down to his final strike.
In the 11th inning, Evan Bischoff drew a leadoff walk, and Highland was once again hit by a pitch. Bischhoff was erased at third on a failed sacrifice bunt for the inning’s first out, but Dutch Reardon was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs, Luca Amoroso, who was 2-for-2 off the bench to that point, delivered a two-strike, two-out single to center to plate the go-ahead run. Suddenly, hitting became contagious, and Amoroso’s hit was followed by singles from Cooper, Nick Satterwaite, and Zach Metz to put the Colonials on top 10-5.
The win was PW’s second in as many days.
“It’s two wins, but we needed to start winning some games pretty quickly,” said Manero, whose team was coming off a 7-0 win over Upper Moreland. “To get some really good back-to-back pitching performances, and we scored 17 runs in our last two games – we’re doing a lot of things we feel pretty good about right now.
“We played pretty good defense the last two days, which has made a big difference.”
Earlier, the Colonials scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings only to watch the Panthers score four in the fifth and one more in the sixth to go on top by two.
“We had a 3-0 lead, and we were cruising,” Manero said. “Cheltenham loads the bases with nobody out in the fifth. We then get the next two guys out, and we’re like – ‘We’re going to get out of this.’
“Then with two outs, they score four runs to take a 4-3 lead. They tack one on in the fifth to go ahead 5-3.”
Delivering singles in the four-run fifth for the Panthers were Hugh Sharkey, Nissim Lebovitz, Amari Cathay and Joel White.
Cathay was the lone Panther with multiple hits. He finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. White had a pair of RBIs.
Leading the way for the Colonials were Amoroso (3-for-3, two RBIs, two runs) and Satterwaite (3-for-6, RBI, run scored). Bischoff had a pair of hits, including a triple, with one RBI. Burke added a pair of hits and an RBI.
PW is 3-3 in conference play (3-6 overall) while the Panthers are 4-4 in the league (6-6 overall).
