With its big meeting with Upper Dublin coming up next Monday, Wissahickon knew how important it was to come out with a win on Friday, solidifying the Trojans in second place while giving them some momentum moving forward.
Thanks to a pair of goals from both Nate DeGroat and John Esposito as well as an impressive first half performance, the Trojans were able to come out victorious over the Colonials in a conference meeting at Wissahickon High School.
Wissahickon, which is now 10-2 overall and 8-1 in conference play, went on top 3-1 after one quarter and carried a 4-1 lead into the half. The Colonials outscored the Trojans 3-2 in the second half, but it only made the final score closer.
“The thing about (PW) is that they always used to beat us, and they’re a great program,” Wissahickon coach Dan Layfield said. “They always play us hard, and they played us hard the whole game today and we respect them for that. It’s a huge win for us for second place with a big Upper Dublin game coming up. We had a lot of shots today and a lot of looks. We couldn’t always finish with their goalie standing on his head, but it was a big win for us and we’re going to work off of this with Ridley tomorrow and Upper Dublin next week.”
John Carrozza and Eric Kaufmann each scored goals for the Trojans, while goalie Jack Meyers stopped six shots in net to earn the win, but it was the offensive attack of DeGroat and Esposito which was the main difference-maker.
“Nate is a fast kid and he’s hard to guard,” Layfield said. “John (Esposito) is definitely our leader with his play on the field. He’s a tenacious player who brings it every game, and the other guys feed off of it. Our attack is still young, but they’re learning, and it showed today.”
The Colonials, who sit at 7-5 overall and 7-4 in conference play, remain in third place behind the Cardinals and the Trojans.
As for Wissahickon, Layfield knows his team cannot look past Saturday’s non-conference meeting with Ridley, despite the biggest game of the regular season just days away. In the meantime, he hopes that his team can build off of Friday’s win and have a better effort against a Cardinals team that won the last head-to-head meeting by seven goals.
“We’re definitely using today and each game as preparation,” he said. “We’re going to try to fix some of the things we do and some of the errors we made in the first game with them. We got caught ball-watching. Our play a man up was abysmal. We dodged hard and created looks, but we didn’t finish. We had our opportunities, but we just didn’t put them in. Upper Dublin is a polished team that will put every shot in the corner and always finish. We’re going to work on finishing and work on our game plan and try to play the best game we can play.”

What a difference a year makes.
Last year, the Golden Bears suffered an 11-3 loss at the hands of the Colonials, but in Friday’s rematch, the rapidly improving Bears returned the favor, holding on for the big win.
“This is huge,” coach Pam Remmey said. “Last year, I was hoping we would surprise somebody.
“I thought we would play better against Upper Dublin yesterday (in a 12-5 loss), but we didn’t. What upset me yesterday was we weren’t playing to our potential. They know the potential they have. We have coached them to do certain things, and that’s what they have to do to win, and they actually did it today.”
Friday’s game was the third in a row for the Bears..
“The first two minutes we were running all over the place,” Remmey said. “I told them to stop running because they were going to get too tired, so we were playing a possession game from the beginning.
“We took them by surprise by scoring a couple of goals early.”
The Golden Bears opened up a 4-1 lead.
“I said, ‘Let’s play possession. I know it’s the first half, but we’re up 4-1 against PW. We have to keep possession and run some time off the clock,’” Remmey said.
The Colonials made a run late in the half, pulling to within one at halftime (5-4). The Golden Bears scored early in the second half to go on top 6-4.
“Sydney Bachmayer, who had three goals and one assist, controlled the attack,” Remmey said. “She’s a very smart player who knows what to do with the ball, and she was running our attack.
“Our defense – instead of keying on just one person like we were at Upper Dublin – we really were playing good team defense with Melissa Felicetti, Mel Wittick and Maura O’Leary.”
In goal, Emma Hood was credited with eight saves.
“She had a great game,” Remmey said.
The Bears opened up a 7-4 lead with 17 minutes left in regulation, but the Colonials trimmed that to two with a goal two minutes later. That score stood until a PW takeaway with 45 seconds remaining. The Colonials scored with 11 seconds showing on the clock to make it a 7-6 game.
“PW called a timeout,” Remmey said. “They had it all lined up for the draw, and Delaney Smith was able to draw it to the other side. She got the draw control and held the ball for the last 11 seconds.”
Smith added one goal and two assists while Allison Felicetti, Samara Santry and Veronica Baez each added one goal.
“That was another thing I liked that a lot of people were scoring goals,” Remmey said. “We got six draw controls.
“Mel Wittick, who’s been sick, played a great game, and she had two draw controls.”
Maddie Pisut had a big game defensively, finishing with four ground balls and three forced turnovers.
“She had a great game today, and she wasn’t even a starter at the beginning of the year,” Remmey said. “She’s worked her way into the starting lineup.
“Maura O’Leary had three ground balls and three forced turnovers, and Melissa Felicetti – I thought my defense was playing together well today.
“We played smart, we held the ball. There weren’t a lot of fouls.”
For the Colonials, Kirsten Monte had two goals while Ali Diamond, Sophie Kolkata, Victoria Betterly and Stephen Fazio each added one.
Goalie Emily Miller was credited with eight saves for PW.
