BASEBALL
Chris Barr (North Penn) contributed a hit, RBI and scored a pair of runs in RIT’s 13-9 loss to Rensselaer in game one of the Liberty League’s best-of-three championship series on Saturday. In RIT’s 10-5 loss in game two, Barr was 2-for-5. RIT will now await a possible at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, which will be unveiled on May 11.
Northampton Community College sophomore Ben Hauser (Central Bucks East) earned a spot on the 2015 Division III All-Region Team. The sophomore catcher batted .352 with 12 doubles and 18 RBIs. Hauser also was named first team all-conference in a vote of EPAC coaches.
Senior Jason Goldberg (Central Bucks East) earned the win on the mound in fourth-seeded Arcadia University’s 8-5 win over fifth-seeded Centenary College in the opening round of the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Southeast Championship Tournament on Wednesday. He allowed four runs (two earned) on 10 hits over seven innings of work.
Catholic University senior shortstop Dan Hinchcliff (North Penn) earned second team All-Landmark Conference honors. The North Penn grad registered a team-high 119 assists. With 37 starts and 38 appearances, Hinchcliff also notched 55 putouts while fielding 16 double plays and finishing the regular season with a .972 fielding percentage. Offensively, Hinchcliff batted .283 on the season while scoring 28 runs with 32 hits, five doubles and one home run. He tops the 2015 Cardinals with 27 RBIs.
Widener centerfielder Greg McDonough (Wissahickon) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 4 First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The finance major owns a stellar cumulative GPA of 3.98 to go along with his athletic accomplishments. Recently, he received First Team All-Commonwealth honors after finishing the regular season with a team-leading 13 doubles, 27 RBIs and 24-of-24 stolen base attempts. As of May 7, he posted a .336 batting average on 48 hits in 41 games. He now has 14 doubles, two triples and a homer for 69 total bases and a .483 slugging percentage. He upped his RBI total to 33 after the conference tournament. Additionally, he has drawn 13 walks and been hit 12 times to garner a .424 on-base percentage. First team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot.
McDonough was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs in Widener’s 7-5 win over McDaniel Sunday to capture the ECAC Southeast Championship. In Saturday’s 9-7 win over Stockton, McDonough was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Kutztown senior Brandon Martinez (North Penn) was honored with his selection to the Capital One Academic All-District 2 first team. With his first team recognition, Martinez advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot. The North Penn graduate is a two-time Academic All-District 2 First Team honoree, KU baseball’s second two-time honoree and first two-time First Teamer. Martinez boasts a 3.83 career GPA as a business administration major. He earned the highest academic honor a student-athlete can achieve when he was named KU baseball’s first-ever selection to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team last year. He has the chance to become a four-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete and has made the Dean’s List seven times. The school record holder for stolen bases in a season, Martinez is a two-time All-PSAC East First Team player. He earned All-Atlantic Region Second Team honors from three different publications last season as he guided the KU baseball team to the 2014 PSAC Championship.
Penn State Abington sophomore Max German (Council Rock North) was named to the All-North Eastern Athletic Conference first team. The CR North graduate finished second in the NEAC in RBIs with 35 while holding a .401 average for the season, which placed him third in the conference.
German was 2-for-4 with a double and run scored while teammate Pat Fitzgerald (Central Bucks South) was 2-for-5 in Penn State Abington’s 13-3 loss to Penn State Berks in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday. In the Nittany Lions’ 9-5 loss to Penn College earlier in the day, Anthony Pletscher (North Penn) was 3-for-4 with a run scored. In Friday’s 9-2 win over Penn State Berks in a first round game, Pletscher was 3-for-5 with two RBIs while German was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, and Fitzgerald was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Trey Guaglionona (Abington) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Senior Zach Philippi (Harry S Truman) made his final appearance in a Spartan uniform a good one, tossing a scoreless eighth inning in York College’s 12-5 loss to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday.
Patrick Campion (Norristown) doubled and scored a run in Chestnut Hill’s 6-2 win over Post on Friday, a win that vaulted the Griffins into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship game. Patrick Kelley (Central Bucks West) threw a scoreless ninth inning. In Thursday’s 16-3 win over second-seeded Post in the opening round of the CACC Tournament, Robert Slagle III (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and one run while Brandon DiBona (William Tennent) was 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Campion was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. Kelly threw a scoreless ninth.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Jason Mulvey (Bensalem) was named the 2015 Colonial States Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year. He is the second straight Griffin and fifth overall to garner top freshman honors. The Bensalem graduate started all 29 games for the Griffins this year, batting .298 with three doubles, four triples and 12 RBIs from the leadoff position. He scored a team-high 24 runs, stole 21 bases, which was second in the conference, and drew 10 walks. Mulvey put together a 15-game hitting streak in April and had eight multi-hit games on the year.
Gwynedd Mercy junior Chris Hens (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the 2015 Colonial States Athletic Conference honorable mention list. Over the final month of the season, Hens raised his batting average over 70 points, finishing at a .326 clip with 21 RBIs, 18 runs, five doubles, two homers and a triple.
Delaware Valley University sophomore centerfielder Kyle Wenger (Souderton) was named the 2015 Freedom Conference Player of the Year. A year ago, the Souderton graduate was the Freedom’s Rookie of the Year and an all-region pick, and he is the first Aggie since 1998 to receive the top baseball honor in the conference. Wenger started all 36 games and batted .432, leading the Aggies in slugging percentage (.712), on-base percentage (.517), hits (51), runs scored (36), RBIs (29), stolen bases (22), doubles (eight), triples (five) and home runs (five). He placed in the top three in the Freedom Conference in seven of those categories and led the way in slugging and triples. Wenger had at least one hit in all but four games and had 15 multiple-hit contests. He scored two or more runs nine times and knocked in multiple runs on seven occasions. Wenger ended the season on a 12-game hitting streak.
Elizabethtown senior pitcher Kristopher Davis (Central Bucks East) was named the Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Year. He also earned first team all-conference recognition in Elizabethtown’s first year as a member of the league. Davis posted a 7-1 record with a 2.53 earned run average while tossing five complete games, striking out 55 and walking just six. He led the conference in wins, innings pitched (64.0), strikeouts, strikeouts per game (7.73), strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.17), walks allowed per nine innings (0.84) and was tied for first in games started (nine). Davis ranked 10th nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio, and his walks allowed per nine innings were the 16th fewest in Division III. The CB East graduate is the sixth pitcher in the program to be named conference Pitcher of the Year and first since 2009. In addition to leading the conference in six categories, Davis compiled the third lowest ERA and was tied for second in complete games. Davis’ selection to the first team is the first of his career and second all-conference honor overall after earning All-Commonwealth Conference honorable mention last year.
Cairn University junior Joey Nieves-Markee (Bensalem) received Colonial States Athletic Conference honorable mention recognition. The Bensalem graduate finished the season with a batting average of .427. He had 53 hits, which included six doubles, an on-base percentage of .527 and 16 stolen bases. Nieves-Markee played either left field or right field. He also had 22.0 innings pitched. The junior outfielder also earned a spot on the 2015 CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Ryan Pater (Central Bucks East) was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored in St. Joseph’s 13-2 win over St. Bonaventure on Sunday. The win clinched the best-of-three series. In Friday’s 14-3 win over St. Bonaventure, Pater was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored.
Moravian senior rightfielder Matt Hanson (Central Bucks West) was named to the 2015 Landmark All-Conference first team. The CB West graduate, a three-time member of the first team, became just the second player in school history to reach 200 career hits. He was hitting .343 with 49 hits, 24 runs, seven doubles, two triples, 28 RBIs, 13 walks and 21 stolen bases. Hanson – the 2014 Landmark Conference, ECAC Division III South and D3baseball.com Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year while earning D3baseball.com Second Team and American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Third Team All-America honors – has set school records in games played with 157 and stolen bases with 61. He is ranked in the top 10 all-time in at-bats with 550 (second), hits with 204 (second), runs with 137 (second and one shy of tying the school record), RBIs with 112 (fourth), doubles with 38 (fourth), triples with 11 (third), total bases with 273 (second) and walks with 62 (seventh).
Moravian freshman pitcher Dan Morrin (Central Bucks East) was named to the 2015 Landmark All-Conference second team. The CB East grad posted a 5-1 record on the mound in his debut season. He is currently 31st in the nation with a 1.43 ERA. He has tossed four complete games with one shutout to go with just 12 walks and a total of 37 strikeouts in a team-high 56.2 innings over 10 appearances, including nine starts.
Hanson was 1-4 with a double, two RBIs and run scored in Moravian’s 16-12 loss to the Catholic University in the third game of the best-of-three Landmark Championship series on Sunday. Earlier in the day in Moravian’s 16-10 loss to Catholic, Hanson was 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and one run. In Saturday’s game one of the championship series, Hanson went 3-for-4 at the plate while scoring two runs to move into first in school history in career runs scored with 139. Morrin improved to 6-1 this season after pitching 6.1 innings with four strikeouts.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Aurora University senior attackman Garret Rosiek (Wissahickon) was named to the 2015 All-Midwest Lacrosse Conference first team. The Wissahickon graduate has a team-leading 76 points with 32 goals – including six man-up goals, 44 assists and 35 ground balls.
Rosiek contributed three assists in Aurora’s 19-8 loss to nationally-ranked Lychburg College in the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championships ‘Sweet 16’ on Saturday. With the loss, the AU squad finishes the season with a 14-8 overall record, a third straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and Midwest Lacrosse Conference regular season and tournament championships.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Cortnee Daley (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed two goals and an assist in No. 18 Louisville’s 10-7 loss to No. 9 Northwestern in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
Lock Haven senior midfielder Kelly Hamilton (Central Bucks South) was named to the 2015 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II All-South Region first team. The CB South grad has been a huge part of The Haven’s potent offensive attack, contributing 45 goals, 12 assists and 57 points. Hamilton has 33 draw controls, 21 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.
Hamilton scored a pair of goals and had three caused turnovers in No. 1 Lock Haven’s 12-3 win over No. 7 Rollins in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Tournament Saturday. Lock Haven will take on Lindenwood next Saturday in the NCAA Final Four.
SOFTBALL
Susquehanna senior Morgan Lewis (Council Rock North) was named the 2015 Connie N. Harnum Award recipient. The Harnum Award is named for SU Sports Hall of Fame coach Connie Harnum, whose tenure included 27 seasons as the head field hockey coach as well as the head coach of the women’s tennis team. The award is given to the senior female student-athlete who best represents the ideals of intercollegiate athletics. Lewis, a four-year starting pitcher for the Crusaders, is a three-time first team All-Landmark Conference pitcher who also picked up Pitcher of the Year Honors in 2012. She has been a member of three Landmark regular season championship teams as well as a member of an outright title team in 2013. That same year, the Crusaders advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they placed third in their regional round of competition. Lewis stands in the top 10 in career program history in strikeouts, shutouts, appearances, innings pitched, wins and games started. Her 51 career victories are just one shy of tying the program record. Off the field, Lewis is a dual major in international studies (with a concentration in comparative cultures) and Spanish. Following graduation, she will be completing a year of service with AmeriCorps in Miami. While at SU, Lewis has been involved with SU FACT and is a member of four honors societies. She also studied abroad in Spain and has served as a Spanish studies liaison to Susquehanna University.
Robert Morris junior Haileigh Stocks (Central Bucks South) was named to the All-Northeast Conference second team. It is her second all-conference accolade after being selected in the league’s designated player spot. She enters the postseason among the top four on the squad in on-base percentage (.362), runs scored (22), doubles (seven) and walks (16). She also is hitting a team-leading .353 with two outs in an inning. Stocks has a chance to join a rare category as she is in line to become the first Colonial to have more walks than strikeouts (13) in a season with at least 100 at bats since 2007. Stocks went 4-for-6 with a home run and five RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of Mount St. Mary’s to open league play. Two weeks ago, she knocked a pair of doubles in a contest at Kent State, an effort that helped her climb the Colonial record book in doubles. She is eighth all-time with 24 with one season remaining. Stocks becomes the second Colonial to earn an All-NEC award as a designated player.
Stocks was 1-for-3 with a double In Robert Morris University’s 2-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in an elimination game of the Northeast Conference Tournament on Friday.
Junior Morgan Decker (Central Bucks South) drove in a pair of runs in Lehigh’s 8-0 win over Bucknell on Saturday. With the win, Lehigh claimed its league best 13th Patriot League Tournament title. In Friday’s 5-4 win over Bucknell, Decker singled and drove in a run. In Thursday’s 3-0 win over Army in the tournament opener, Decker was 3-for-4 with one run scored.
D’Anna Devine (Pennsbury) was 2-for-3 with a run scored in USF’s 3-1 loss to No. 15 UCF in a semifinal of the American Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday night.
La Salle sophomore Christina Bascara (Pennsbury) earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference second team. The Pennsbury graduate earned her spot on the second team at third base. She was top 10 in the conference in both on-base percentage (.475) and slugging percentage (.605). She also led the Explorers with a .358 average, 29 hits, 12 extra base hits, eight doubles and tied for the team lead with 20 runs scored. Bascara was on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team as a freshman.
Sophomore Mackenzie Obert (Pennsbury) was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the second inning of La Salle’s 8-4 season-ending loss to top-seeded Dayton in the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship on Friday. In Thursday’s 5-4 win over second-seeded Saint Louis, sophomore Suzanne Swanicke (Pennsbury) doubled and drove in a run, and Bascara singled and scored a run. In Wednesday’s 4-3 elimination game win over St. Bonaventure, junior Erica Reis (Central Bucks East) hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. In Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to George Mason in an opening round game, Bascara hit a solo home run.
Whitney DeLagol (William Tennent) was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in Penn State Abington’s 18-3 win over Keuka College in last Sunday’s NEAC semifinal. Emily Wrenn (Hatboro-Horsham) picked up her ninth win of the season, scattering six hits over four innings of work. In a 5-4 loss to Penn State Berks in the title game, Danielle Jones (Harry S Truman) was 2-for-3 with a run scored while DeLagol was 1-for-3 with a triple and run scored. Bianca Monterosso (Abington) was 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored.
St. Joseph’s senior Ashley Alden (William Tennent) was named to the College Sports Madness A-10 All-Conference second team. The Tennent graduate matched St. Joe’s single season mark for home runs with 10. She finished the season hitting .390 with 36 runs batted in to go along with 27 runs scored. The starting first baseman was also dominant in A-10 play, batting .583 with a 1.583 slugging percentage and .722 on-base percentage. She also reached the 100-hit mark for her career this season. Coming to Hawk Hill after two seasons at Rutgers, Alden quickly accumulated hits over her two seasons, needing just 27 this season to hit 100 for her career. The starting first baseman did it in short order, picking up her 100th hit in memorable fashion on a two-run home run in the second inning of St. Joe’s 14-0 win over Massachusetts on March 28.
St. Joseph’s freshman Nikki Alden (William Tennent) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. A versatile player, Alden made an immediate impact at the plate, on the field and in the circle. Earning starts at first base, right field, designated player and pitcher, the 6-foot rookie hit .342 with 21 runs scored and finished second on the team in runs batted in (31) and doubles (11). Appearing in 11 contests as a pitcher, Alden finished the year with a 3-4 record and ranked second on the squad in overall wins and conference-only wins (two).
Senior Ali Vavala (Central Bucks East) went 2-for-3 in her final collegiate game in West Chester’s 3-2 loss to Seton Hill on Saturday in the NCAA DII Atlantic Region 2 Tournament. In Friday’s 3-1 loss to Concord in the Atlantic Region opener, Laura Altenburger (Neshaminy) was 1-for-2. Sarah Derstine (Souderton) also recorded a hit.
MEN’S TENNIS
Mohammed Ammouni (Bensalem) earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at first singles in Penn State Abington’s 7-2 loss to three-time NEAC/NAC crossover champion Colby-Sawyer in last Sunday’s NAC championship game. He also was part of Penn State Abington’s first doubles team that earned a 6-1, 6-4 win.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Freshman Austin Cooper (Upper Merion) hit an NCAA Division II provisional time in the 800 meters when IUP competed in the 10th annual Allegheny Gator Invitational on Friday. Cooper finished with a time of 1:52.31, just .02 seconds faster than the NCAA provisional mark. He will await word if he is chosen for the 2015 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships at the Grand Valley State University Track & Field Complex in Allendale, Mich., May 21-23. Full selections will be announced May 12.
Ursinus freshman Jequan Mitchell (Upper Merion) finished eighth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.62 at the 2015 Centennial Conference Championships last weekend.
Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Ben Keliojor (Norristown) was part of the winning 4×400 relay at the CSAC Invitational last Sunday.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Ursinus sophomore Erin Farrell (Neshaminy) won the 200m dash with a time of 25.67 while sophomore Christ Johnson-Hyde (North Penn) was fifth with a time of 26.57 at the 2015 Centennial Conference Track and Field Championships last weekend.
Gwynedd Mercy senior AnaLee Rodriguez (Pennsbury) finished first in the shot put and hammer throw at the CSAC Invitational last Sunday, breaking her own school records. She was also second in the discus and fourth in the javelin. Junior Zakiyyah Ricahardson (Pennsbury) bettered her ECAC qualifying time in the 100 meters, clocking in at a season-best 12.23. She also took first in the 200. Richardson and Kaitlin Iffrig (Pennsbury) were part of the first place women’s 4×400 relay. Richardson also was part of the second place 4×100 relay.
Moravian sophomore Lauren Suelke (Quakertown) finished fourth in the triple jump at 10.82 meters (35-6) at the 2015 Landmark Conference Championships last weekend. She was the runner-up in the long jump. Freshman Casie Cronk (Quakertown) was part of the 4×400 relay that finished fourth with a time of 4:11.80. Cronk finished seventh in the high jump with a leap of 1.47 meters (4-9.75). Freshman Beth Ann Davies (Quakertown) finished second in the pole vault. Moravian captured its eighth straight Landmark Outdoor Championship.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman Ryan Jamison (Neshaminy) is a member of the Loyola University Chicago men’s volleyball team that defeated top-seeded Lewis (21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 27-25, 23-21) in a five-set match to capture the program’s second straight national title on Saturday night. With the win, Loyola becomes just the fourth school in the tournament’s 45-year history to win back-to-back NCAA titles. Loyola ends the season with an overall record of 28-2 while Lewis finishes the year 27-4.
