COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 50, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 15
By Scott Huff
Newtown – The only numbers that really mattered at the end of the night were the digits that were illuminated on the scoreboard at Walt Snyder Stadium. And that final score was a 50-15 ‘mercy-rule’ Suburban One League Continental Conference victory for Council Rock South (4-2, 3-0) over visiting Central Bucks West (2-4, 2-1).
The victorious Golden Hawks – who soared to 454 yards of total offense – scored on four plays of over 40 yards and seven touchdowns in all. While the losing Bucks – which rambled for 400 yards of total offense and 19 first downs – could only finish two drives for touchdowns.
“We have quite an explosive duo in (senior running backs) Brendan Patterson and Kevin Hickey,” said CR South head coach Vince Bedesem as Patterson and Hickey each scored three touchdowns for the Hawks. “But I am really proud of the way that (senior quarterback) Shaun Stackhouse has played this season.
“We make a (base) call and he has to make a call at the line of scrimmage as to which any one of three players can get the ball,” added Bedesem. “Shaun has worked very hard in the offseason to get better. We have a great core of seniors on this team.”
“Our offensive line really makes everything happen,” said Stackhouse who was a perfect 4-4 for an astonishing 174 yards and two touchdowns. “But both Brendan and Kevin are great playmakers and come up with the big plays in tough situations.”
Hickey was the playmaker for the Hawks in the early going.
On the first series of downs in the game – Hickey took a handoff from Stackhouse and sprinted 48 yards for a touchdown. Hickey then added a two-point conversion run to give the Hawks a quick 8-0 lead.
Central Bucks West showcased an efficient offense of its own on its first series. The Bucks put together an impressive 16-play drive that carried to the Hawk 10-yard line – but CBW failed to score as a field goal attempt sailed wide.
“We showed we could move the ball, but we left too many points on the field,” said first year Central Bucks West head coach Chas Cathers. “We had trouble finishing drives – and you can’t beat good teams without finishing drives.”
The Hawks – and Hickey – again struck pay dirt quickly. This time the speedy Hickey dashed 67 yards for a touchdown – and Brett Gold added the first of his six extra points to give Rock South a 15-0 lead.
This time the Bucks answered with a touchdown. Eddie Shields – who finished with 11 completions for an incredible 236 yards – connected with Kevin O’Hanlon for a 45-yard completion. Griffin Shields capped the three play scoring drive with a nifty 31-yard run. Kenny Doak added the PAT to cut the lead to 15-7.
It would be the closest the Bucks would get for the remainder of the night.
CR South outscored CB West 21-0 in the second period to put the game away. Stackhouse capped a seven-play scoring drive with a nine-yard touchdown scamper – Stackhouse threw a gorgeous 23-yard TD pass to Hickey – and Patterson concluded the second period scoring with a three-yard touchdown bolt.
West opened the second half with an 11-play drive that died at the Hawk five-yard line. Three plays later – Patterson cradled a Stackhouse pass and jetted 89 yards for a touchdown.
West scored a third period touchdown as Shields fired a 53-yard scoring strike to Brandon McCauley – while Patterson answered for the Hawks with a 40-yard touchdown jaunt to close out the scoring for the game.
“CB West really knocked us out of the playoffs last year,” said Bedesem of a 34-20 regular season loss to West that hurt Rock South in the power rankings. “I think I might have mentioned that once or twice this week.
“But this is high school football – and you just move on to next week,” added Bedesem as the Hawks will travel to William Tennent. “We have to make sure that we keep our heads and play good football.”
“I think we are a much better team than we showed tonight,” said Cathers as his Bucks will travel to play unbeaten Quakertown next week. “We have some mistakes we have to fix.”

NESHAMINY 21, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 14
The Titans opened up an early 7-0 lead, but the Redskins reeled off 21 unanswered points – 14 in the final minutes of the first half – to take a lead they would not lose.
A one-yard Nate Norris touchdown run and the PAT gave the Titans a 7-0 lead after one quarter.
Momentum began to swing in Neshaminy’s favor after Kyle Smith intercepted a pass that was batted at the line. The Redskins took over at their 40 and marched 60 yards for the score. The drive featured a whole lot of Will Dogba, who took it in from 12 yards out for a TD and the 7-7 tie after Dylan McDonald’s extra point.
That tie stood until the final minutes of the second quarter when the Redskins engineered a scoring drive that featured a 26-yard run by quarterback Mason Jones. Hayden Rooney took it in from five yards out, and the Redskins weren’t finished yet. Jones found Zach Tredway from 15 yards out, and the ‘Skins took a 21-7 lead into halftime.
The Titans made things interesting when Sam Thompson took it in from 29 yards out on the first play from scrimmage in the fourth quarter to make it 21-14. The drive included some tough runs by Joe Bechta as well as the completion of a play action pass from Thompson to Stephen Ianuzzi.
It was four-and-out for the Titans on their ensuing possession, and after the Titans’ defense held, the Titans took over at their own 43 with 2:38 remaining. Bechta gained nine yards on first down, but the ‘Skins Eddie Parry delivered the defensive play of the night when he sacked Thompson for a loss of five yards. It marked the beginning of the end for the Titans, who gained two on third down and then watched a fourth down pass fall incomplete.
Dogba led the Redskins with 132 yards and one touchdown, and for the Titans, Bechta finished with 128 yards on 19 carries. Jones threw for 92 yards and ran for 43 more.
Neshaminy (4-2, 2-1 SOL) will host Souderton next Friday while Central Bucks South (2-4, 1-2).will host Abington.

NORTH PENN 39, SOUDERTON 14
Reece Udinski stole the spotlight on Friday, throwing five touchdown passes – three in a glittering first half performance – to lead the Knights to the win over their neighboring rivals.
The bright spot of the night for the Indians came in the first quarter when – after the Indians recovered a North Penn fumble – Alec Morshead took it in from 15 yards out to spot the visitors an early 7-0 lead.
By the end of one quarter, the Knights led 14-7 and never looked back. In the opening frame, Udinski gave a preview of things to come in a big night when he found Nick Isabella with an 8-yard touchdown pass and followed that with a 55-yard pass to Ricky Johns.
Another long TD pass to Johns put the Knights on top 20-7 in the second quarter, and any chance of an Indian comeback were put to rest when – with two seconds remaining in the quarter – Dantae Stewart hauled in a tipped pass in the end zone to send the Knights into halftime with a 26-7 lead.
Nick Isabella’s two-yard touchdown run put the Knights on top 39-7 before Brandon Taragna scored a late TD for the Indians.
North Penn (4-2, 3-0 SOL) will travel to Bensalem next Friday, and Souderton (3-3, 1-2) will be on the road at Neshaminy.

PENNRIDGE 38, ABINGTON 15
The Rams took a 21-0 lead into halftime and extended that to 31-0 early in the fourth quarter after a Matt Mauer 31-yard field goal. The Ghosts scored a pair of late touchdowns, but the Rams dominated both sides of the football on their way to the convincing win.
A five-yard Judens Desrosiers touchdown run gave the Rams a 7-0 lead after one frame, and quarterback Devon Balmer threw a pair of touchdown passes – the first to Dan Hockman and the second to Ryan Cuthbert to send the Rams into halftime with a three-touchdown lead. Hockman also had an interception late in the half.
Abington got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when quarterback David Kretschman found Shakur Williams for a 14-yard TD.
Pennridge (4-2, 2-1 SOL) will host Pennsbury next Friday, and Abington (0-6, 0-3) will be on the road at Central Bucks South.

PENNSBURY 52, BENSALEM 12
The Falcons, who racked up more than 300 yards on the ground, opened up a 38-0 lead after three quarters on their way to the lopsided win.
Quarterback Mike Alley scored on a five-yard run to put the Falcons on the scoreboard. Then it was Chris Rupprecht duplicating that with a five-yard run of his own, and the Falcons led 14-0 after one quarter. By halftime – thanks to a pair of second quarter TDs and two-point conversions, the Falcons led 30-0. Daulton Hose, who had 193 yard in just over a half of action, scored on a four-yard run early in the third quarter, and the mercy rule went into effect.
Pennsbury (5-1, 3-0 SOL) will travel to Pennridge next Friday, and Bensalem (0-6, 0-3) will host North Penn.

QUAKERTOWN 42, HARRY S TRUMAN 0
The Panthers continued to put up big numbers, and in Friday’s no-doubt-about-it win over the visiting Tigers, they showcased the strong arm of quarterback Tom Garlick, who threw for 202 yards – 181 in a first half that saw the Panthers open up a 28-0 lead.
Kyle Baskin accounted for two of Garlick’s first half TD passes – the first for 30 yards and the second for 34 yards. Rob Burns, who finished with 148 yards on the ground, had a 24-yard touchdown run in the first half.
Quakertown (6-0, 3-0 SOL) will travel to Central Bucks West next Friday, and Truman (2-4, 0-3) will travel to Council Rock North next Saturday (1:30 p.m.).

UPPER MORELAND 49, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 35
Fans of SOL football circled Oct. 16 as the date unbeaten conference powers Upper Dublin and PW would meet in a high stakes winner-take-all game. The two teams will meet next Friday at PW, but Upper Moreland took some of the mystique out of that matchup by handing the Colonials their first loss.
Even more shocking than the loss was the way the Golden Bears did it. After the Colonials went on top 14-0 – thanks to a pair of Nyfeese Nasir TDs, the Bears came storming back, reeling off 42 unanswered points. The two teams were deadlocked (14-14) after Rodney Morgan – who finished with 200 yards on the ground – took it in from 80 yards out. A touchdown by UM quarterback Casey Decker, who accounted for four TDs – sent the Golden Bears into halftime with a 21-14 lead.
By the time the Golden Bears were finished, they led 42-14 before the Colonials staged a late-game rally that did little more than make the final score more respectable.
Upper Moreland (5-1, 2-1 SOL) will travel to Upper Merion next Friday, and PW (5-1, 2-1) will host Upper Dublin.

CHELTENHAM 22, UPPER MERION 14 (OT)
With the Panthers in need of a hero, Branden Mack delivered in a big way.
The Panthers were staring at a 14-6 deficit when Mack found teammate Akeem Browne for a five-yard touchdown pass with 43 seconds remaining in regulation, but there was still the not-so-little matter of the two-point conversion to knot the score. Mack delivered again, finding Browne, and the stage was set for overtime.
The Panthers had the first possession in OT, and Yasin Abdul-Haqq took it in from 10-yards out. Again Mack found Browne for the two-point conversion, and after the Panthers’ defense held, the dramatic come-from-behind win was in the books.
In the first quarter, it was Dylan Jones taking it in from one yard out, and the Panthers took that 6-0 lead into the fourth quarter when the Vikings staged a comeback.
Isaiah Graham-Mobley ignited the Vikings with a 64-yard punt return for a touchdown, and after the PAT, Upper Merion led 7-6. UM went on top 14-6 after Kori Smith raced into the end zone from 86 yards out with three-and-a-half minutes remaining. Cheltenham, however, would not be denied.

HATBORO-HORSHAM 63, SPRINGFIELD 21
The Hatters put on a staggering display of offense, opening up a 49-0 halftime lead and going on top 56-0 before the visiting Spartans got on the scoreboard.
The fun started early with Casey Walsh taking it in from 20 yards out, and then it was Walsh finding Joe Lee with a touchdown pass that made it a 14-0 game. Jordan Mason’s 51-yard touchdown run spotting the Hatters a 21-0 lead after one quarter, and they were just getting started.
They tacked on 28 more points in the second quarter that included a fumble recovery and touchdown by Phil Pagliaro. By halftime, Mason had 158 yards, and a win was all but in the books for the suddenly streaking Hatters, who improved to 3-0 in conference play.
Hatboro-Horsham (3-3, 3-0 SOL) will travel to Wissahickon next Friday, and Springfield (2-3, 1-2) will host Cheltenham.

UPPER DUBLIN 49, WISSAHICKON 0
While the Flying Cardinals’ offense has been putting up big numbers each week, the team’s defense – all but lost in the shuffle – has been turning in standout performances of its own. One week after shutting out Springfield, the Flying Cardinals kept the Trojans off the scoreboard for four quarters.
Stacey Gardner’s 25-touchdown run and Todd Spirt’s first of seven successful extra points spotted the Cards a 7-0 lead, which would have been enough to win it, but the Cardinals were just getting started. Kaleif Lee scored back-to-back touchdowns on the ground, and Garnder cashed in for his second TD of the game, this one from one yard out. When Lee took a Ryan Stover pass 64 yards for a touchdown, the Cardinals led 35-0, and they had done all that damage in one quarter.
The Cardinals tacked on a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter – one on a 19-yard run by Lee for his third TD of the night and the final on an 18-yard run by Phil Butler.
Upper Dublin (6-0, 3-0 SOL) will travel to Plymouth Whitemarsh for a battle of perennial conference powers next Friday. Wissahickon (1-5, 0-3) will host Hatboro-Horsham.
