MEN’S BASKETBALL
Dave Knox (Central Bucks South) scored 13 points in Washington College’s 79-66 loss to Penn State Harrisburg on Friday.
Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) scored 19 points in No. 9 Villanova’s 78-55 loss to No. 7 Oklahoma last Monday in the Pearl Harbor Invitational.
Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) collected his second straight double-double in Temple’s 77-73 win over Penn on Wednesday, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Gwynedd Mercy senior Julian Hyden (Bensalem) was named CSAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for
the week ending Dec. 6. The Bensalem graduate recorded a double-double in the Griffins’ win over Centenary, notching 16 points and 10 rebounds. Earlier in the week, he posted a 20-point performance on 4-of-5 shooting behind the arc to go along with six rebounds and four assists in the victory at defending champion Neumann. For the week, Hyden averaged 18.0 points and 8.0 rebounds on 12-of-22 shooting (54.5%) and 6-of-11 from 3-point range. This season, Hyden averages 16.7 points and 9.9 rebounds while leading the team in three-pointers made (16), rebounds (69), blocks (11) and steals (11) in seven games. He ranks eighth in the CSAC in scoring, second in rebounding and third in blocked shots.
Freshman guard Jimmy Murray (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 24 points in Moravian’s 88-64 win over Penn State Lehigh on Friday. He also had two steals and two rebounds. In Wednesday’s 88-58 win over Haverford, Murray scored 15 points.
Kutztown junior Josh Johnson (Norristown) was named PSAC East Athlete of the Week for the week
ending Dec. 6 while redshirt freshman guard Anthony Lee (Abington) was named Freshman of the Week. Both were key contributors in KU’s 3-0 record last week.
Johnson earned his third career PSAC East Athlete of the Week honor, averaging 16.7 points and nine rebounds per game. He had team highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds in KU’s win over Pitt-Johnstown and 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks in the win over IUP. On the season, Johnson leads KU in scoring at 16.1 points per game (13th in PSAC) and rebounding at 9.1 per game (seventh in PSAC). He is shooting 59 percent from the field (fourth in PSAC) and leads Kutztown with eight steals. For his career, Johnson has 925 points, 75 shy of 1,000 and 474 rebounds (10th in KU history). He is also tied for ninth in school history with 72 blocks and is shooting 61.3 percent from the field for his career, which would rank him in the top five in KU history.
Lee received his first career PSAC East Freshman of the Week honor, averaging 13 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last week. He was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time this season against Pitt-Johnstown and produced with season highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds. The Abington graduate also scored 14 points in the win over IUP in his second consecutive start. It was Lee’s second straight double-digit game. On the season, Lee is averaging 9.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He is shooting 66 percent from the field, 60 percent from behind the arc and 92 percent from the free throw line. Lee also has seven steals and five blocks.
Johnson recorded team highs of 19 points and eight rebounds in Kutztown’s 115-75 win over Penn State Berks. He was 4-of-5 from the field and 9-of-10 from the foul line. Johnson has scored in double figures in all eight games this season and nine straight dating back to the end of last season. Ryan Connolly (Souderton) scored 17 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting and 4-of-6 from three-point land. He also had team highs of three steals and two blocks. Lee had his third consecutive double-digit scoring effort, recording 11 points. He also had six rebounds and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Freshman Nicole Munger (Central Bucks West) scored 15 points off the bench in Michigan’s 86-77 loss to No. 20 UCLA on Sunday afternoon. The CB West graduate scored seven points in the first quarter after Michigan fell into an early 7-0 hole, allowing the Wolverines to trim that deficit to 19-17 after one quarter.
Alex Wheatley (Council Rock South) contributed 15 points and five rebounds in Princeton’s 61-47 win over Pitt on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 81-70 win over Monmouth, Wheatley connected on 6-of-8 shots for 15 points and also had four rebounds.
Alysha Lofton (Central Bucks South) posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in No. 25 Albright’s 73-66 win over Moravian on Saturday afternoon. Emily O’Donnell (William Tennent) added six points. With the win, Albright improved to 9-0 on the season. In Wednesday’s 78-41 win over Keystone College, Lofton contributed six rebounds, five assists, four steals and two points while O’Donnell had eight points and four rebounds.
Sophomore Vicky Tumasz (North Penn) knocked down 3-of-4 three-point tries on her way to nine points in Shippensburg’s 73-64 win over Philadelphia University on Saturday.
Sophomore Larissa Leyes (Upper Dublin) connected on a pair of three-pointers in Gwynedd Mercy’s 69-48 win over Juniata on Wednesday.
Sophomore Allison Gallagher (Souderton) netted 22 points in Widener’s 65-59 win over reigning conference champion Stevenson on Saturday. Gallagher shot 9-of-18 from the field and 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. She also had four steals. In Wednesday’s 77-64 win over Neumann, Brianna Cullen (North Penn) contributed six points and seven rebounds.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Conner Quinn (Hatboro-Horsham) received the most improved award for the 2015 Penn State cross country team.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Tori Gerlach (Pennridge) was named the Most Valuable Athlete of the 2015 Penn State cross country team and also received the captain’s award. She also was recognized as the track and field team’s Most Valuable Athlete.
FOOTBALL
Widener junior linebacker Steve Gozur (North Penn) was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team as voted by the sports information offices at 30 institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. A civics engineering major, Gozur is receiving the recognition for the first time of his career. The junior linebacker was named a 2015 All-Middle Atlantic Conference Second Team honoree after registering a team-high 71 tackles along with two forced fumbles this past season. Gozur recorded 10 tackles again perennial powers Rowan and Delaware Valley and also added two sacks during the fall.
West Chester senior Andrew Cohen (Council Rock South) was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer All-Area Academic team. The CR South graduate, who is majoring in health and physical education, has a 3.3 GPA. He made his first appearance on the all-region squad as selected by the region’s sports information directors. The defensive lineman tied for the most votes in the region with fellow first team selection Marcus Martin from Slippery Rock. Cohen was also named the PSAC Eastern Division defensive play of the year and was a national finalist for the Gene Upshaw Award. He broke the conference record for career sacks with 33.5. He notched 13.5 sacks this past fall to lead the conference and rank fifth nationally. He also led the PSAC in tackles for a loss with 20. That number ranked 17th nationally as well. He is a three-time All-PSAC East selection and a two-time first team pick.
MEN’S SOCCER
La Salle senior Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) has been named to the Midwest All-Region team for the fourth
straight season, joining Vince Kelly (1974-77) and Cesidio Colasante (1994-97) as the only Explorers to earn four All-Region nods. Farrell split time between forward and defender this fall, finishing the season with two goals and three assists. The Wissahickon graduate scored the game winner in a 1-0 defeat of Loyola in La Salle’s home opener in August. He is tied for third all-time at La Salle in games played with 76, including 74 starts. Farrell is tied for eighth in program history with 16 career assists and has scored 16 goals as a four-year starter for a total of 48 career points. Farrell led the Explorers in scoring with seven goals as a junior on the way to an A-10 All-Conference nod. The Wissahickon graduate was named to the A-10 and Soccer 6 All-Rookie teams in 2012 and is a two-time Soccer Six All-Star. Farrell was one of 14 Atlantic 10 players to be named to the NSCAA All-Midwest Region team.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Temple senior Erin Lafferty (Upper Dublin) was named second team All-Northeast Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The Upper Dublin graduate helped lead the Owls to a 12-7-1 record, posting the most wins in program history and were a part of the only team to ever post back-to-back seasons of double-digit wins (In 2014, the team went 11-8-1). Lafferty finished her career as an Owl as the program leader in games played with 79. She was second on the team in goals with seven, going a perfect 4-for-4 on penalty kicks and collecting two game-winning goals, including a PK that helped to lift Temple over conference foes SMU for the first time in five tries.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Junior Dylan Cooper (William Tennent) was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay in Ursinus College’s second place finish in the three-team Ram Classic at West Chester on Saturday. Travis Venables (Pennsbury) was part of the third place 200 free relay. Junior Spencer Collopy (North Penn) finished fifth in the 100 freestyle.
Evan Sherkness (Plymouth Whitemarsh) finished first in the 50 free for West Chester in Saturday’s tri-meet against Ursinus and Albright. Geoff Boody (Council Rock North) captured third place in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:26.90. West Chester finished first at the three-team meet.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
La Salle freshman Olivia DiStefano (North Penn) was named the Atlantic 10 Women’s Swimming and Diving Rookie of the Week following her performance at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. For DiStefano, this is the third time this season she has earned the honor. The North Penn graduate earned three top 10 finishes in the three individual events she swam in. In the 100 backstroke, she turned in a time of 57.75 to finish second out of the 56 women in the field. She placed fourth out of the 57 swimmers in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.97, which is in the top 10 in the Atlantic 10 this season. She finished seventh out of 57 in the 100 freestyle, thanks to a time of 52.84. DiStefano also swam on four relay teams: 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, helping all four finish in second place out of 10 schools. The Explorers finished the three-day invitational with 1204.5 points, good for second place out of 11 schools in attendance.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Moravian sophomore Casie Cronk (Quakertown) tied for third in the high jump with a mark of 1.50 meters (4-11) at the Wagner College Seahawk Shootout on Friday. Junior Lauren Sulke (Quakertown) placed fifth in the long jump with a jump of 4.83 meters (15-10.25).
WRESTLING
East Stroudsburg redshirt freshman Collyn Dorney (Quakertown) was 2-0 on the day at 125 as the Warriors posted a pair of dual wins over Ohio Valley (42-0) and Muhlenberg (45-3) at Saturday’s tri-meet hosted by Muhlenberg. Dorney won by decision vs. Ohio Valley and via forfeit vs. Muhlenberg.
