UPPER DUBLIN 8, MOUNT ST JOSEPH 6
Talk about turning the tables – the Flying Cardinals did just that on Monday.
In last year’s non-league meeting with the Mount, the Cardinals led 8-5 at halftime but didn’t score the rest of the way. In Monday’s rematch, the Flying Cardinals trailed 5-3 at the intermission but limited the Magic to just one goal in the second half as they outscored their visitors 5-1.
“We focused on playing together as a unit,” said coach Lauren Mateja, crediting defenders Mary Petrucci, Demi Balasa and Jess Derr. “We switched up our defenses a little bit, trying to keep them on their toes and use the element of surprise to our advantage.
“They buckled down, identified who their leading attackers were. Mount has some fantastic attackers, but our defense locked down. Our goal was – ‘We let up five goals. We need to help the attack out and give them less of a deficit to come back from.’”
Paige Lawton scored the tying goal with 10:20 remaining in regulation, and Caroline Wall connected on the go-ahead goal with 3:20 remaining.
“We were focusing on maintaining possession because our defense was getting a little more work in the first half than our attack,” Mateja said. “We wanted to give them more of a break, and we had smart possessions. We weren’t trying to force it in.
“We were making heads-up plays. To be able to come back and only allow one goal in the second half is definitely exciting, and it’s better than some of the outcomes we’ve had recently.”
The win came on the heels of three straight losses for the Cards.
“I am so excited,” Mateja said. “We finally pulled things together.
“This was definitely important. It’s a confidence booster. Last season when Upper Dublin played the Mount, the team was up 8-0, and the Mount came back to win 9-8, so there was definitely a little revenge. Going into conference play tomorrow, it’s always good to come off a win.”
According to the first-year coach, the Cardinals stuck together during the tough losing streak.
“What we teach every day at practice is just the word ‘together,’” Mateja said. “You win together, you lose together. It’s never one person’s fault.
“That’s always part of our game plan – we pride ourselves on getting the assist or coming up with the caused turnover or our teammate coming up with the ground ball. Today that is what we did pretty well.”
Jess Grodsky connected on all three of her shots and also had one caused turnover and one draw control. Wall (two goals, one assist, one draw control) and Lawton (two goals, one ground ball) also made important contributions on attack. Elizabeth Barber added one goal, one caused turnover, two ground balls and one draw control. Hannah Reape chipped in an assist. Lindsey Schreiber had one caused turnover, three ground balls and five draw controls.
Goalie Sarah Herchenroder was credited with six saves and also had two caused turnovers.
