PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 4, UPPER MORELAND 1
The second time was the charm.
After making the trek to Upper Moreland on Tuesday only to see their game postponed because of the weather, the Colonials made the trip back on Wednesday worth their while, breaking a six-game losing streak at the hands of the Golden Bears dating back to April 2, 2013. They lost those six games by a combined total of eight runs.
“I always joke with Scott (Ludlow) – it seems like we always lose 4-2, 4-2, 4-2,” PW coach Dana Moyer said. “Every year almost, it’s 4-2. That was our score the first time we played them this year.
“We had some errors, and this time our defense just came up solid.”
Moyer was especially pleased with the performance of her battery – freshman pitcher Kayla Yeager and junior catcher Ragan Ebersole. Yeager scattered four hits, walked one and fanned two.
“Kayla did her job,” the Colonials’ coach said. “I can count on her. She’s the youngest pitcher that we have, and she’s very consistent with hitting her spots, hitting her pitches. I have the most variety of pitches to throw with her.
“We have a game plan, and she knows going in what she has to do, and she executed it perfectly, and our defense played ‘D’ behind her, so it was good. It was a great win.”
Moyer pointed to defensive standouts Elena Iannuzzelli (shortstop), Peyton Baldwin (second base) and Lauren Fuhrmeister (third base) as key.
“They were super solid, especially at third,” the Colonials’ coach said. “With our game plan, we need the left side of our infield to be solid. Elena I can count on all the time, and Lauren is putting in the time and work to be better every game. I was happy to see her play well.
“Playing so many freshmen – they’re playing with girls that have played before, and the first couple of weeks they were kind of feeling things out, knowing where girls would be. Now that they’ve been playing for a while, things are starting to fall into place. It was beautiful to see.
“They had some runners on first base, and we always try to get the lead runner, and it looked like our shortstop and second baseman – Peyton as a freshman and Elena as a senior – had been playing together for 10 years. They looked simpatico.”
The Colonials scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings before the Bears plated their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. The Colonials got that run back in the top of the sixth.
Standouts at the plate for PW were freshman Jen Byrne (2-for-4, four stolen bases, two runs scored), freshman Josie Tassoni (2-for-4, one stolen base, one run scored) and sophomore Kaleigh Branagh (2-for-2, RBI). Junior Julie Sassi contributed a sacrifice fly.
Upper Moreland (4-3 SOL) will host Upper Merion on Thursday, and Upper Moreland (7-3, 4-3) will be on the road at Wissahickon.

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 5, HATBORO-HORSHAM 4
By Kyle Morhardt for Suburbanonesports.com
Central Bucks South hosted Hatboro-Horsham in an important league game on Wednesday. Both teams looked to rebound from tough losses in their previous matches versus North Penn and Souderton respectively.
“Hatboro is always a rivalry,” CB South coach Dan Hayes said. “Joe DiFilippo and I have become pretty good friends, and it’s a lot of fun to play them.”
The Hatters broke a scoreless deadlock in the top of the third with a two-run single from Deanna Moyer. CB South managed to capture the lead with a two-run single from Mikaela Simons followed by an RBI single from Alexa Ortman. Setting the stage for the three-run outburst was a single by Maddie Bieber as well as a double by Taylor Marinelli.
In the top of the fifth, Kyleigh Dinnien hit in a run with a sacrifice fly, knotting the score 3-3, but the favor was quickly returned by CB South as Maddie Bieber replicated the same sacrifice fly to return the lead into South’s hands. Kylie Flagler tied the game back up for the Hatters in the top of the sixth with an RBI single. CB South needed one run to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, and they were able to achieve just that from a double off the base of the fence by Alex De Leon and an RBI single from Alexis McConomy.
McConomy (2-for-4) and Mikaela Simons (2-for-3) led the Titans at the plate.
Kylie Kenney earned the complete game win inside the circle for CB South, allowing four hits while racking up six strikeouts and walking seven. Kaeli Simmons pitched a complete game for the Hatters, tallying up seven strikeouts.
Central Bucks South (9-5, 4-5 SOL) will host Pennridge next Tuesday, and Hatboro-Horsham (8-5, 4-5) will travel to Pennsbury for a non-league contest on Friday.

UPPER MERION 4, MARPLE NEWTOWN
Olivia Sborlini tossed a two-hit gem, walking two and fanning four.
“She pitched a really good game for us,” coach John Whitney said. “I actually wanted to throw a different pitcher, but I couldn’t pull her. I just couldn’t do it. It was too close.”
The Vikings put three runs on the board in the first, and that was more than enough for Sborlini. Dez Kandy got things started with a double and moved up to third on Sborlini’s sacrifice. Abby Volpe drew a free pass and stole second, setting the stage for an RBI single by Bridget Valeri. A two-run double by Allie Moffett gave the Vikings a 3-0 lead. The Vikings – who collected three of their four hits on the day in the first inning – manufactured a run in the sixth for the 4-0 final.
Upper Merion (11-1, 8-0 SOL) will travel to Plymouth Whitemarsh on Thursday.
