CHELTENHAM 78, ACADEMY OF NEW CHURCH 71
Trevonn Pitts is in some kind of groove, following his 33-point effort against Hatboro-Horsham in an overtime win Tuesday with a 31-point performance 24 hours later against ANC. He also had 13 rebounds.
Coach John Timms was still marveling about Pitts’ heroics in Tuesday’s 78-76 win in OT over the Hatters.
“I watched the tape – we were down two, we missed a shot, and he followed it up and had a putback that tied the game up,” the Panthers’ coach said. “They had the ball for the last possession and a chance to win the game. With 20 seconds left, the game is tied.
“Trevonn steals the ball with five seconds and gets and and-one to win the game with one second left. That’s how we ended it last night.”
The Panthers didn’t need any late-game miracles on Wednesday. They led 19-15 after one quarter and took a 33-27 lead into halftime. They took a 56-47 advantage into the final quarter and added to that lead before turning the game over to the reserves.
“Coming off of last night’s game, we had to try to muster up some energy – that was a big win in overtime versus Hatboro,” Timms said. “We were trying to muster up some intensity, and it was real hard.
“Once again the defensive intensity picked up in the second half, and that allowed us some separation. We played two different halves again. The 24 points they scored in the fourth quarter doesn’t tell the story. Eighteen of those 24 points were scored in the last four minutes. Not to take anything away from what they did, but by that time, we were up 19-20 points. Our intensity did pick up in the second half, and we did take control of the game.
“I knew this would be a difficult game. I’m just happy that we were able to give guys some much-needed rest because we still have two games on Friday and Saturday. We don’t have time to blink. We just have to keep moving.”
In addition to Pitts, Jack Clark had 15 points and Tim Spencer added 10. Ahmad Bickley contributed nine points and nine assists.
Cheltenham (8-3, 5-1 SOL) will host Upper Dublin on Friday.
