ABINGTON 13, NORTH PENN 9
Coach Amanda Kammes called Tuesday’s victory over the Knights “a more Abingtonesque” win. One thing for certain, it was a whole lot less stressful on the second-year coach, whose team led from start to finish after back-to-back nail biters.
“We talk a lot about – what’s the Abington brand,” Kammes said. “We talk about that all the time.
“Just like you would think of Nike – how do you want people to associate Abington lacrosse? Last year, it was ‘who the heck is Abington?’ Now this year, as we’ve seen, (Sam) McGee is face guarded every game. People are prepared. I think we have largely been very well scouted, so it’s just been a transition for these guys to adjust to that.”
Kammes was thrilled to see seven players put their names in the scoring column. Sam McGee and Casey McCallister led the balanced attack with three goals and one assist each. Jules Greco and Lindsay Baer both added a pair of goals while Kaley Enhow, Abby Thomas and Maddie Sjoholm each had one goal. Cathy Staerk, Baer and Greco all had an assist.
“They’re a good team,” NP coach Heather Mellow said. “You have to give them some credit. Sam McGee can shoot from anywhere. There’s a whole bunch of them that can shoot from anywhere, so it’s not just her.
“You have to be aware that they’re all strong attack players, their defense is strong, and they were winning the draws. Unless you come out with your ‘A’ game, you’re not going to win against them.”
It was McGee jumpstarting the Ghosts out of the gate when she turned a Greco pass into a goal just over four minutes into the game.
“She’s dynamic,” Kammes said of McGee. “Everyone kind of has to stand at attention when she scores, and honestly, even when she doesn’t score, (her shot) is a rocket and goes back to the restraining line because it went off the post so hard.
“It’s been a real challenge for her. When you’re asking a kid who was a prolific scorer last year with 85 goals to assume a new role – big credit to her because she struggled with that early on. We had a little talk, and she rededicated herself to it being more important that we win ballgames than she’s scoring six goals a game, and you’re seeing that now. We have all these other people contributing that defenses forget about or don’t know anything about because they’re so focused on McGee. I invite people to keep doing that.”
The Knights knotted the score 1-1 on a free position goal by Heather Shannon, but the Ghosts answered with back-to-back-to-back goals by Enhow, McGee and Greco to go on top 4-1. The Knights pulled to within (5-4) one after a Julia Keffer goal, but the Knights answered with goals by Greco and McCallister to go back on top by three.
“We tried to refocus from our last games and tried to all work together,” Baer said. “Communication was a big thing, and when they scored to refocus ourselves and come back stronger.
“I think this was the real Abington tonight. We had a lot of good plays, and we looked better than we had in our other games. Our warm-up was definitely different from how it has been. We’ve been more pumped up, and just celebrating and cheering each other on, strict discipline on each other and forcing ourselves to do better.“
With 14 seconds remaining in the half, Shannon scored with a Victoria Braeunle assist, pulling the Knights within two at the intermission.
“I wasn’t really happy with how we went into halftime,” Kammes said. “We finished the half sloppy.
“I’m just reinforcing to these guys constantly – on our terms, do it the Abington way, celebrate the assist, work off ball. All those things that kind of are uncommon in the lacrosse landscape, but that’s how we play.”
Goals by McCallister and McGee to open the second half extended the Ghosts’ lead to 9-5. A Kelly Macnamara goal pulled the Knights to within three, but that’s as close as they would get the rest of the way.
“First time this season everyone has gotten minutes,” Kammes said. “We’re a pretty deep team. We’re just young.
“Literally, half the team is upperclassmen, and half the team are freshmen and sophomores. I put the responsibility on the upperclassmen – their job is to get those guys minutes because down the stretch when we’re tired and we’re in playoff time and we’re all beat up, we’re going to need some of those kids to be ready to go.”
Phifer had a hat trick to lead the Knights while Shannon added two goals and an assist, and Bri O’Donnell had two goals. Keffer and Macnamara each had one goal. Kristin Varilla had a pair of assists while Victoria Braeunle and Macnamara both had one.
Mellow lauded the effort in goal of Kate Winstanley, who recorded nine saves.
“This is only her second week,” the Knights’ coach said of the standout ice hockey goalie who is new to the position. “Kate did an outstanding job.
“They had some good shooters, and she stopped a lot of good balls, a lot of good shots. I’m pretty proud of her for stepping up.”
Abington goalie Kiki Brasher was credited with 10 saves in the win.
Abington (5-1, 2-0 SOL) will be taking a road trip to New Jersey on Saturday to face perennial lacrosse powerhouse Moorestown. North Penn (2-3, 1-1) will host Lansdale Catholic in a non-league game on Wednesday.
Ghost stats: In addition to goals/assists, McGee had four draw controls, Staerk had two ground balls and one draw control. Sjoholm and Enhow both had three draw controls. Sjoholm also had three ground balls while Enhow had one. Jordan Campbell led the Ghosts with four ground balls. Sam Simon added a pair of ground balls while Becca Gable, Hecka Morris and Anna Joseph each had one. Lauren Van Buren had one caused turnover and one draw control.
