COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 6, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 4
The Golden Hawks used a team effort to defeat their neighboring rival, opening up a 5-2 halftime lead and never looking back. The win was South’s first over North since May 9, 2013.
“This means an awful lot to the girls,” assistant coach David Hurwitz said. “Council Rock North is our archrival, and it’s been quite a few years since South beat North.
“I think we’ve only won four times in history over Council Rock North, so it’s a real big win for Council Rock South, and it’s a big win for the coaches because we’re teaching the girls how to play the game of lacrosse, and it’s translating really well out on the field. We look like a team, we’re playing like a team and having an awful lot of fun.”
Defense has been key in the Golden Hawks’ recent wins, and Monday’s win was no exception.
“Our defense is doing really well,” Hurwitz said. “Tonight we scored one goal against ourselves, and they scored two free possessions, so they – like North Penn – only scored one goal against our set defense.
“We held North Penn to three goals, and two of them were free possessions as well. Our defense is playing extremely well, and we’re playing defense as a team, so it’s not any one player. There’s a lot of communication.”
South’s defense is anchored by Tori Wright, Mikayla VanAken, Shannon Lind, Dani Purcell and Faith Turner.
“Tori Wright is our defensive leader, and she kind of runs the defense,” Hurwitz said of his junior captain. “Mikayla Van Aken is a low defender that’s playing in the midfield as well and is really playing under control.
“We have a number of first-time players on the field – Dani Purcell, Shannon Lind and Faith Turner, who are really doing very well. We put a lot of pressure on the attack.
“Our goalie (Chloe Wszolek) is getting some personalized training from Taylor (Hurwitz), who played in college as a goalie. She’s done very well, especially intercepting the ball. She’s playing with a lot of confidence, and most importantly, in her case, when we make a save, we’re very under control. We move the ball from side of the field to side of the field without being in too much of a hurry to get it up the field.”
Six players – Dom Marino, Caitlyn Thornton, Emily Keller, Mikayla Van Aken, Faith Turner and Caroline McGovern – scored one goal each for the Golden Hawks.
“On offense, we’re extremely patient,” Hurwitz said. “We lack speed as a team, but we play very much under control.
“Early in the year, we didn’t get outside to practice, and we lost three games before we ever hit the outside field. Our defense starts on the offensive end so our ride – when our offense plays defense in the offensive end – has become really good as well. We’re forcing a lot of turnovers and playing really well in the midfield, and we’re compensating for the fact that we don’t have a great deal of speed.”
Scoring single goals for North were Eliana Shakt, Megan Haggerty, Anna Lehman and Chloe Ondria.
The Golden Hawks held a 21-9 advantage in shots. Rock North goalie Margaret D’Auria was credited with nine saves while Wszolek had five saves.

UPPER DUBLIN 10, UPPER MORELAND 7
Kim Frantz – a three-sport standout at Upper Dublin – returned to her alma mater on Monday, and although the Golden Bears came up short on the scoreboard, the Golden Bears’ first-year coach had no complaints about her team’s effort.
“Overall this game was a great game for both teams,” Frantz said. “UM played with heart from the first minute to the last minute.
“With an unfortunate coaching error, which changed the momentum of the game in the beginning of the second half, the girls still fought hard throughout the whole game until the final minute. Like I told the girls, we all make mistakes, even coaches, and sometimes it can change a game, but tomorrow we all come back and prepare for Wednesday and have learned one more lesson. I couldn't be more proud of this team and how they are playing – they are a special group of girls.”
The Flying Cardinals opened up a 5-3 halftime lead and maintained a lead until the final horn. Lindsey Schreiber led the Cards with three goals and three assists. Hannah Reape also had a hat trick. Mack Moore and Becky Browndorf both had one goal and one assist. Jackie Rama had one goal and five draw controls. Caroline Wall added a single goal.

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 12, WISSAHICKON 9
The Colonials have endured the kind of adversity that could have buried them for the season. It began with the loss of junior midfielder Sophie Kolkka, who tore her ACL in PW’s season opener at Radnor. The St. Joseph’s commit was lost for the season.
“Against Radnor, we started out really well,” coach Ellen Reilly said. “It was 6-4 at halftime, and then Sophie went down. It devastated the kids.”
The Colonials fell to Radnor 15-6.
In the team’s one-goal loss to Abington, two more players were injured. Senior Cate Golden, who has signed with American University, broke her hand, and Lily Hanlon suffered a concussion. Hanlon returned to the lineup last week.
“Her return has benefitted us,” Reilly said. “Going down two midfielders at the caliber they were – it hurt us.
“I have three freshmen and three sophomores on the field that don’t have too much experience that have been trying to work hard, understand the game and play at the level we’re expecting them to play.”
After dropping their first eight games, the Colonials have won four straight.
“With the wins comes some confidence and understanding, and it’s benefitting us,” Reilly said.
In Monday’s win, Georgetown commit Ali Diamond had a hand in seven goals, scoring four and assisting on three others. Lexi Petrakis had four goals, and Vic Betterly had two goals and two assists. Hanlon added one goal, and Amanda Fineman had one goal.
“Ali and Vic on offense know the game and are playing in college,” Reilly said. “Vic is a low attack with Ali, but I’ve had her at midfield. At one point, she was at midfield and going back and forth in my defense and playing an important part in my zone.
“Sam Ward, my low defender who is a senior – those three are keeping the team together. I feel bad for the kids because we had high expectations. I had everybody but three kids coming back from last year. If I had all my kids, it would have been a completely different season, but the positive is these freshmen and sophomores are getting experience, and they’ll be back next year, and I’m losing only two seniors. It should do well for next year, but it stinks for our two seniors.”
For the Trojans, Emily Vervlied had another huge game, scoring seven goals and assisting on another.
Plymouth Whitemarsh (4-8, 3-3 SOL) will host Hatboro-Horsham on Wednesday, and Wissahickon (4-11, 2-4) will host Upper Dublin on Wednesday.
