MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Sophomore Connor Irwin (Hatboro-Horsham) competed in his first meet as a member of the Holy Family cross country team and finished second overall at the 17th annual Wilmington University Invitational on Saturday. Irwin completed the 8K course in a time of 29:08.7.
Gettysburg freshman Dylan McKeever (Central Bucks East) finished 49th with a time of 20:59 at the Shippensburg University Galen Piper Challenge on Friday night.
Sophomore Declan McDonald (Central Bucks West) finished ninth with a time of 17:01 in Bloomsburg’s convincing win over Mansfield at the annual Husky Invitational.
Cairn University sophomore Joel Varughese (Bensalem) placed first overall with a time of 33:03.06 on the 8K course at the CSAC Preview Meet on Saturday.
Penn State Abington freshman Dominic Pignatelli (Central Bucks South) finished second in the Nittany Lions dual match against Bryn Athyn on Friday night.
Saint Joseph’s freshman Matthew Scarpill (Central Bucks East) was the Hawks’ #8 finisher with a time of 15:46.76 for 26th overall in a field of 74 racers at the season-opening TCNJ Blue/Gold Invitational on Saturday.
Ursinus sophomore Logan Mazullo (Central Bucks West) finished eighth with a time of 17:49.6 at the Bryn Mawr Invitational on Saturday. Ursinus had eight of the top nine individual finishers while rolling to the event title.
Shippensburg senior Alex Balla (Quakertown) finished in 18th place with a time of 20:10 at the 2017 Galen Piper Alumni Open/Cross Country Challenge on Friday.
West Chester sophomore Eric Chapman (Neshaminy) finished 34th with a time of 19:39.36 at the Lehigh Invitational on Friday.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Elizabethtown senior Kelsey Brady (Council Rock South) took sixth place with a time of 15:05, a new 4K PR, at the Galen E. Piper Alumni Open/XC Challenge at Shippensburg on Friday.
Freshman Hannah Knudsen (Hatboro-Horsham) started her collegiate career with an eighth place finish in 22:12.5 at the Lehigh Invitational on Friday evening, averaging just under six minutes per mile. The HH alum was the second Lehigh runner to cross the finish line. Lehigh finished third behind West Virginia and Rutgers in the 10-team meet.
Saint Joseph’s sophomore Meridith Twomey (Pennsbury) posted a time of 19:30.05 to finish 28th out of 68 racers at the season-opening TCNJ Blue/Gold Invitational on Saturday. Freshman Maggie Moyer (Central Bucks East) finished with a 5K PR of 25:57.05.
Shippensburg junior Lindsey Gerlach (Central Bucks West) placed 17th with a time of 15:32 at the 2017 Galen Piper Alumni Open/Cross Country 4K Challenge on Friday night.
Millersville freshman Natalie Pietrowski (Neshaminy) ran a 22:50.80 to grab 49th place in the Alumni Run Invitational hosted by Franklin & Marshall to begin the 2017 season.
Kutztown junior Stephanie Bresadola (North Penn) had a career day in the opening cross country meet of the 2017 season, beating a personal record time and finishing in first place at the Salisbury Fall Classic Invitational on Saturday. Her time of 21:57.16, along with five other runners finishing inside the top 11, helped lead the Golden Bears to a first place finish out of six teams.
FIELD HOCKEY
Freshman Caroline McGovern (Council Rock South) scored the first goal of the game in 12th-ranked Boston College’s 2-1 win over No. 6 Maryland on Sunday. BC won both games of the ACC/Big 10 Cup at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Lancaster. It is the first time the Eagles won both games of the early-season tournament and improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2013. The Eagles’ victory was the third over a top 25 opponent and the second against a team ranked higher. In last Sunday’s a 2-1 double overtime victory over No. 18 Albany, McGovern scored her first collegiate goal.
Rachel Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) registered a goal for the third straight game in Monmouth’s 5-3 loss to No. 10 Virginia on Sunday afternoon. In Friday night’s 2-1 loss to William & Mary, Konowal scored on a penalty stroke in the 62nd minute to knot the score 1-1. In last Sunday’s 5-1 win over Kent State, Konowal turned in a career-best four-point game with a goal and a pair of assists.
Carlie Baldus (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a goal and an assist in Delaware Valley’s 3-0 win over Neumann University on Friday.
Junior goalie Jules Singer (Council Rock North) stopped 11 of 14 shots in Ursinus College’s 5-3 win over Rowan on Friday night, negating a 27-18 advantage in shots for the Profs.
Sophomore Emma McLaughlin (Quakertown) contributed an assist in Villanova’s 2-1 loss to Saint Joseph’s on Friday. In Villanova’s 2-1 loss to Longwood, McLaughlin assisted on the Wildcats’ only goal.
Emily Hawkins (Cheltenham) recorded 16 saves in a strong effort in Keystone College’s 2-1 loss at Houghton College on Saturday.
Senior goalkeeper Emma Rosenthal (Central Bucks East) was credited with five saves in 16th-ranked Muhlenberg’s 2-1 loss at Scranton. Freshman Marlee Siegel (Upper Dublin) was one of four freshmen that started in their Muhlenberg debuts.
Maggie Walsh (Central Bucks South) scored off a penalty corner with 22 seconds remaining in regulation, capping a late rally as Gwynedd Mercy won 3-2 over King’s at the Misericordia Tournament on Saturday. The goal came seven minutes after the Griffins tied the game 2-2.
Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a goal in Kutztown’s 8-0 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.
Junior transfer Marissa Elizard (North Penn) did not face a shot in goal in No. 7 West Chester’s 6-0 win over No. 10 Adelphi University on Friday.
FOOTBALL
Senior linebacker Nick Wright (Council Rock South) scooped up a fumble and raced 70 yards for a touchdown in No. 20 Delaware Valley’s 24-19 home victory over No. 11 Wesley College on Saturday. Wright finished the game with 10 tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble, the 70-yard fumble recovery for the touchdown and a safety.
Kevin Goetz (Neshaminy) connected on a 40-yard field goal that turned out to be the game winner in Albright’s 38-35 overtime win over Salisbury on Friday night. He also connected on all five extra-point attempts.
Junior running back Josh Adams (Central Bucks South) scored the quickest season-opening touchdown for Notre Dame in 24 years and rushed for 112 yards in the first quarter in the Irish’s 49-16 win over Temple on Saturday. The CB South alum scored on a 37-yard run 33 seconds into the game, the fastest touchdown to open a season for the Irish since linebacker Pete Bercich returned an interception 21 yards on the opening play against Northwestern in 1993. It was the quickest offensive touchdown for the Irish to open a season since at least 1963. Adams finished with 161 yards on 19 carries. After wrapping up the New-Gold game in August, head coach Brian Kelly announced that Adams would be the seventh team captain in 2017. Over the last two seasons, Adams rushed for 1,768 yards (6.4 yards per carry) to go along with 11 touchdowns.
Sophomore Stacey Gardner (Upper Dublin) rushed for a career-high 197 yards and quarterback Thomas Garlick (Quakertown) threw three touchdown passes in Ursinus College’s 35-13 rout of visiting Bethany (W.V.) in Saturday’s season opener. Gardner shredded Bethany’s defense for an average of 7.6 yards a pop. That total included a 57-yard run that set up Gardner’s own three-yard plunge into the end zone on the first play of the second quarter, kick starting a string of 21 unanswered points in the first five minutes of the stanza. Gardner, who posted the highest single-game rushing total by a Bear since 2006, was just three yards shy of becoming the sixth player in program history to rush for 200 yards in a game. He also caught two passes for 18 yards. Garlick finished 16-of-24 for 241 yards. The sophomore signal-caller also rushed 14 times for 53 yards. On the defensive side, Jack Spingler (Neshaminy) recorded five tackles, one for a loss, and Alexander Skyrm (Souderton) had two tackles.
Senior defensive end George Shipp (North Penn) scooped up a ball on the two-yard line and took it into the end zone in No. 25 West Chester’s 51-9 win over visiting Bentley on Thursday night. Isaiah Cruz (Abington) had four tackles, Zack Hockman (Pennridge) had three tackles and Kevin Duggan (Central Bucks West) added two tackles.
Vince Char (William Tennent) had a hand in seven tackles in Widener’s 6-0 loss to Widener on Saturday.
Craig Reynolds (Abington) had 335 all-purpose yards, 10 shy of his school record from last season, in Kutztown’s 31-28 loss to Assumption on Saturday. He had 133 rushing yards, including touchdown runs of 38 and 43 yards, 34 receiving yards, 108 kick return yards as well as 60 punt return yards on three returns. His two rushing touchdowns gave him 18 for his career, tied for ninth all-time in school history. Josh Lee (Abington) had two receptions for 20 yards. On the defensive side of the football, Luke Snyder (Pennsbury) had five tackles, two for a loss, and Jalen Nieves (Bensalem) had four tackles.

Nick Miller (North Penn), a 2016 All-Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom honoree, connected for a goal in Delaware Valley’s 6-0 win over Penn State Mont Alto on Saturday.
Jacob Helwig (Central Bucks South) was one of four freshmen starters in Ursinus College’s 3-1 loss at Susquehanna on Friday in its season opener. The youthful Bears, who brought in 16 new freshmen, do not have a senior on their roster.
Freshman forward Jose Palomeque (Upper Dublin) recorded a goal and an assist in Penn State Abington’s 3-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday.
Jordan Katz (North Penn) made four saves to earn his second clean sheet of the season in Widener’s double overtime scoreless draw against Cabrini on Sunday afternoon. In Friday night’s 3-0 win over Penn State Abington, Katz recorded a career-high eight saves, six in the first half.
Redshirt senior Matt Robinson (North Penn) scored the lone goal in La Salle’s 3-1 loss to Loyola (Ill.) on Sunday.
Junior Cole Kropnick (Wissahickon) scored a goal in Shippensburg’s 2-2 tie with Concord on Saturday. In Thursday’s 3-0 win over Goldey-Beacom, Kropnick connected for a goal and junior Jake Shefsky (Council Rock South) assisted on a goal.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Following her second two-goal outing of the season, Penn State junior midfielder Marissa Sheva (Pennridge) was named to the TopDrawerSoccer’s Team of the Week for the week of Aug. 21-27. It is the first TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week honor for Sheva, who scored twice on three shot attempts in the Nittany Lions’ 4-2 win at Arkansas. In three games, she scored four times in six shot attempts.
Kristin Wilkinson (North Penn) scored the first goal of her career in Elizabethtown’s 3-0 win at Rutgers-Camden on Friday night.
Sarah McDonald (Pennsbury) made four stops in goal in McDaniel’s 1-0 win over Shenandoah on Saturday. In Friday’s 5-0 loss to fourth-ranked William Smith, McDaniel had nine saves.
Alyssa Ryan (Wissahickon) assisted on a goal in No.4 Kutztown’s 3-0 win over Shepherd on Saturday.
Junior Brianna Rock (Bensalem) scored her first goal of the season in Holy Family’s 4-0 win over Lincoln University on Saturday. In Thursday’s 3-1 win over Queens College, Rock assisted on the game-winning goal.
Chrissy Terraces (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored in the 58th minute of play on a header to propel Albright to a 1-0 win over Marywood in Saturday’s season opener.
Junior goalkeeper Grace Bendon (Central Bucks West) recorded four saves in Saint Joseph’s 4-3 overtime win over Towson on Sunday. In last Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Delaware, Bendon was credited with six saves. In the Hawks 2-0 win over Temple, Bendon recorded four saves.
Kailey Hopkins (William Tennent) was one save shy of tying a personal best as the junior goalie recorded 12 saves, including two point blank stops in the second half to keep it a one-goal game in Gwynedd Mercy’s 1-0 loss to Muhlenberg on Friday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Chelsea Gallagher (William Tennent) provided a team-leading three aces in Elizabethtown’s 3-0 sweep of Messiah on Saturday.
Senior co-captain Taylor McCartney (Pennsbury) had 12 kills in Ursinus College’s 3-1 win over Albright on Friday.
Freshman Steph Judkins (Pennridge) had a monster double-double with 25 kills and 25 digs in Cabrini’s 3-2 loss to Randolph-Macon on Saturday. In the Blue and White’s 3-0 win over Benedictine, Judkins again paced Cabrini’s offense with a team-high 10 kills. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Marymount, Judkins made a major impact in her first collegiate action, pairing a team-high 11 kills and 16 digs. Freshman Morgan Collito (Council Rock North) added six kills. In Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Goucher, Judkins had a team-high six kills.
Freshman Cait Saalfrank (Pennridge) was named to the All-Tournament Team, highlighting Gwynedd Mercy at the DeSales Invitational. In a 3-0 loss to Rutgers-Camden, Saalfrank collected a match-high 26 digs. In a 3-0 loss to DeSales on Friday, Saalfrank collected a match-high 13 digs. In a 3-0 loss to Washington College, Saalfrank had top dig honors with 19.
