WISSAHICKON 7, ABINGTON 1

The Wissahickon Trojans started off their 2018 campaign with a 7-1 win over Abington on Tuesday. The Trojans backed up a strong first outing from Quinn Rovner (‘19) with a seven-run outburst in the top half of the fifth. Rovner was impressive during his four innings of work, overpowering the Ghosts with nine K’s and no walks. Junior Steve Loden picked up right where he left off last year with a huge game at the plate, powering two triples and a double while driving in two runs. The Trojan bats showed that they still have some life after losing the heart of their line-up to last year’s graduating class. Junior Joel Bjordammen tossed one inning of shutout relief, and sophomore Mike Gorman shut the door with two solid frames while only allowing one. First-year Head Coach Andy Noga also picked up his first career win with the Trojans.The Trojans pounded out 12 hits and played flawless defense in Tuesday’s season opener. It turned out to be a winning combination. They broke up a scoreless ballgame with a seven-run fifth inning.
Also for the Trojans, Michael Steitz was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored. Bobby McFarland was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Eddie Fortescue also was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Andrew Booth and Brian Hynes each added a hit and RBI.
Jake Ward doubled and had the Ghosts’ only RBI.
Seven pitchers saw action for the Ghosts. Joey DiMaria threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Christian Lavallie, JP Nolan and Liam Friel each threw a scoreless frame for the Ghosts.
Wissahickon (1-0) will host Harry S Truman on Wednesday, and Abington (0-1) will be on the road at Central Bucks West on Thursday.

PENNSBURY 20, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 5 (5 innings)
The defending state champions were operating on all cylinders in Tuesday’s opener, exploding for 12 hits and 20 runs in the abbreviated contest. A nine-run fifth blew the game wide open for the Falcons, who led 5-0 after three innings.
Contributing RBIs in the nine-run fourth were Max Crawn, Zach DeMarchis, RJ Huth, Justin Massielo and Sam Ruta.
Massielo led the Falcons’ hit parade with two hits, including a triple, five RBIs and a run scored. Huth was 1-for-2 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Kyle Dear was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Ruta contributed a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Jake Martel was 1-for-1 with a double, RBI and five runs scored. Leadoff batter Josh Arruda was 1-for-1 with a double, two RBIs and two runs.
Christian Buchler earned the win.
Pennsbury (1-0) will travel to Central Bucks South on Wednesday, and Central Bucks West (0-1) will host Abington on Thursday.

HARRY S TRUMAN 7, WILLIAM TENNENT 1
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Tigers erased that with a four-run fourth. They added three more runs in the fifth to seal the Panthers’ fate.
TJ Braisier had a big day at the plate for the Tigers, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Wane Pekarski was 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Timmy Foley was 1-for-3 with a double. Cameron Culver had an RBI.
Tennent was led by the 2-for-4 effort of Joey Shannon, who scored a run.
Mikey McCormick earned the win, allowing four hits and one run (unearned) in six innings. He struck out six and walked three. Culver threw a scoreless inning in relief, striking out two.
Kevin Seddon threw two scoreless innings in relief for the Panthers.
Harry S Truman (1-0) will be on the road at Wissahickon on Wednesday, and William Tennent (0-1) will host Lansdale Catholic on Wednesday.

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 13, BISHOP McDEVITT 0 (5 innings)
The Patriots made easy business of McDevitt in Tuesday’s non-league opener. Jack Roland threw an impressive one-hit shutout in the abbreviated five-inning contest, fanning six and walking none.
A nine-run first by the Patriots put the game out of reach early.
Colin Weber drove in four runs to lead the Patriots. Dan Schick, Grant Meiers and Sean E’Nama each had two RBIs. Nick Blake, James Pello and Tyler Young all drove in one run.
Central Bucks East (1-0) will travel to Conwell Egan on Wednesday for a non-league contest.

PERKIOMEN SCHOOL 6, QUAKERTOWN 4
The Panthers found themselves on the short end of a 5-0 score heading into the fifth when their offense began to show signs of life. They scored all four of their runs over the final three innings but couldn’t get over the hump
Quakertown managed just five hits with Sean Brennan (RBI), Nolan Byrnes (RBI) and Brian Robison each collecting doubles. Dennis Pierce also contributed an RBI.
Quakertown (0-1) is off until next Tuesday when it will host Wissahickon in its SOL opener.

DOWNINGTON EAST 10, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 5
Connor McKeown and John McSweeny each drove in a pair of runs, but it wasn’t enough. McSweeny was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored, and McKeown was 1-for-3.
The Titans, who held a 6-5 advantage in hits, led 4-2 after plating four runs in the top of the third. The Cougars seized control of the game with a seven-run fifth.
Six pitchers saw time on the mound for the Titans. Kevin Gillard 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out two and walking one.
Central Bucks South (0-1) will host Pennsbury on Wednesday.

WHEATON NORTH (Ill.) 6, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 5
The Indians took a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning when Wheaton erupted for three runs to eke out the win.
The Indians, who held a 9-6 advantage in hits, trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth when they scored four of their runs. Matt Shenot, Jason Walker and Ryan Stalker all contributed RBIs in the frame.
Stalker, who absorbed the loss on the mound, was an impossible out at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Shenot doubled and had a pair of RBIs.

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 2, MEDINA (OH) 1
The Colonials edged Medina in Monday’s season opener in Vero Beach, Fla., scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings after Medina took a 1-0 lead in the third.
Jacob Nunez had two of the Colonials five hits – including a double – and also scored a run. Jack Mangan had PW’s lone RBI.
Ben Mascio earned the win on the mound, scattering five hits and allowing one run in six strong innings. He fanned five and walked two. Zach Chandler earned the save with a one-two-three seventh.

COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 8, BURLINGTON CENTRAL 4
The Indians opened their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., with a win, opening up an 8-1 lead before Burlington Central scored three runs in the top of the seventh.
A six-run second was more than enough to propel the Indians to the win. Leadoff batter Cavan Tully had a big day at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Matt Kinney was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Matt Shenot and Matt Peterson each had a hit and RBI.
Five pitchers saw action on the mound. Matt Roda earned the win, allowing just one hit in three scoreless innings. He fanned five and walked three.
