The Patriots – who were sparked offensively by the five-goal effort of sophomore Riley Forman – seized control of Monday’s game against their neighboring rival in the second half, closing it out with a 7-1 tear that turned a 7-7 halftime tie into a six-goal win.
“CB East did a phenomenal job the second half of being poised on attack and winning the draw,” South coach Janique Craig said. “It really came down to draw controls, and we did not win them the second half as we did in the first.
“We simply need to limit turnovers and win the draw. I’m proud of the way the girls played the first half, but CB East just outplayed us. Our goal for Wednesday is to play two solid halves.”
Senior Erin McGovern (one goal, three assists) and Brigitte Bishop both had a four-point game for the Patriots while sophomore Katie Powell had a three-point game with two goals and an assist. Senior Mackenzie Boyle and sophomore Quinn Ferry both contributed a goal and an assist. Senior Bella Ridolfi had one assist.
Coach David Schlesinger pointed to two key factors in the Patriots' second half turnaround. The first was a change in defensive strategy and included inserting freshman Fiona Henderson into goal late in the opening half.
"Also a focused defensive strategy to defend CB South's top two players, Kasey Dietzel and Anna Green," said Schlesinger, crediting assistant coach Todd Forman for devising the strategy. "We did not want either superb player to continue to score freely as they had in the first half.
"The strategy worked. Henderson had four saves on five shots in the second half, and we began to assert ourselves more aggressively on the draw. Janique's team played with tremendous heart and battled us until the final whistle. It was a terrific bounce-back win for the Patriots."
While Henderson turned away four shots for the Patriots, junior Maddie Gresko recorded two saves.
For the Titans, Kasey Dietzel and Anna Green were a two-woman show as both contributed four goals and two assists.
South goalie Laura Robinson, according to Craig, had a solid second half in goal with 11 saves.
