MEN’S BASKETBALL
Freshman Jesse Rivera (Central Bucks East) contributed four points, five assists and one steal in Cairn University’s 83-78 win over Keystone College on Saturday.
Damian Washington (Upper Moreland) finished with 19 points in Delaware Valley University’s 62-57 loss to Muhlenberg College on Friday. In the consolation game of the Sponaughle New Year Tournament at Franklin & Marshall, an 83-72 loss to Keene State, Washington finished with a game-high 25 points, including 4-of-12 shooting from behind the arc and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. He added five rebounds.
Evan Slone (Souderton) scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds in Arcadia’s 90-75 defeat of Albright on Saturday. It was Arcadia’s eighth straight win. In Wednesday’s 90-47 win over Bryn Athyn, Slone scored 10 points and also had five rebounds. Will Derr (Upper Dublin) also had five rebounds. In Arcadia’s 89-75 win over Penn State last Sunday, Slone had 14 points, hitting all five of his shots from the field and all four of his free throw attempts.
Junior Tracy Simsick (Souderton) scored a team-high 21 points in DeSales University’s 84-58 win over Penn State-Berks on Saturday. Mike Bealer (Souderton) contributed eight points off the bench. In last Sunday’s 91-78 win over Johnson & Wales in the championship game of the Al Senavitis Memorial Tournament, Simsick, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored a career-high 30 points and added six rebounds and three steals. In last Saturday’s opening round 90-71 win over Bryn Athyn, Bealer hit seven three-pointers to finish with 21 points. He was 7-for-10 from outside the arc. Simsick added 15 points.
Junior Riley Thompson (Council Rock North) scored 21 points in Ithaca’s 89-74 win over Union College on Friday. The CR North grad connected on 9-of-19 shots and also pulled down eight rebounds. In last Sunday’s 95-77 win over Ursinus College at Embry-Riddle as part of the Land of Magic Tournament in Daytona, Fla., Thompson had 10 points. In last Saturday’s 92-77 loss to No. 5 Hamilton College in the tournament opener, Thomas reached double digits with 12 points to go along with three steals.
Zack Muredda (Pennridge) was a steady floor general for the Bears in Ursinus College’s 101-84 win over Rosemont on Friday, racking up seven assists to go with eight points and six rebounds. In the Bears’ 114-101 loss to #5 Hamilton at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla., Muredda had five rebounds, five steals and three assists.
Freshman Jack Clark (Cheltenham) had nine points and six rebounds off the bench in La Salle University’s 69-60 win at the University of Massachusetts on Saturday.
Junior Amir Hinton (Abington), the nation’s leading scorer, was held to just 17 points, seven assists and five rebounds in Shaw’s 88-73 loss to Chowan on Thursday night.
Anthony Lee (Abington) tallied a game-high 20 points to go along with four rebounds and seven assists in Kutztown’s 80-69 win at Bloomsburg on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 74-61 road win over Bowie State, Lee scored 32 points to add onto his PSAC leading scoring average of 27.3 points per game entering the contest, connecting on 10-of-19 shots (52.6 percent) and 4-of-7 from long distance (57.1 percent). It was his 43rd consecutive game in double figures. He added seven rebounds and three assists. In last Saturday’s 99-76 loss to West Chester, Lee finished with a team-high 17 points. He also had eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
Senior guard Matt Penecale (Abington) scored 15 points on 4-of-7 seven shooting from the floor in West Chester’s 72-63 win over Millersville on Saturday. It marked the fourth straight game the guard has scored in double figures after only reaching that scoring plateau once in his previous five outings. Penecale also pulled down a season-high nine boards to go along with three assists and two steals in 32 minutes played. In last Saturday’s 99-76 win at Kutztown, Pencale had 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior guard Makenzie Mason (Central Bucks West) finished with her fourth double-double of the year, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks in the University of Scranton’s 66-53 win over Elizabethtown on Saturday. In Monday’s 71-40 win over UMass-Boston in the championship game of the 2018 WPI Holiday Tournament, Mason, who shot 7-for-9 from the floor, scored a team-best 18 points and also had nine rebounds and three assists. In an opening round game of the tournament, a 72-35 win over Roger Williams, Mason had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Senior Nicole Munger (Central Bucks West) had 12 points and three rebounds in Michigan’s 71-70 loss to Purdue on Saturday. In Monday’s 76-60 win over No. 12 Minnesota, Munger had eight points.
Junior Alynna Williams (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 18 points in No. 16/18 Jefferson University’s 84-75 win over Felician on Saturday. Senior Erin Maher (North Penn) contributed eight points and eight rebounds. In Thursday’s 67-61 win over previously unbeaten University of the Sciences, Williams, who scored 15 points in the first half, finished with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-8 from the three-point line. In Jefferson’s 70-54 win over Bridgeport, Williams contributed 14 points, and Maher grabbed eight rebounds.
University of the Sciences sophomore Irisa Ye (North Penn) was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 30. The honor came just days after she was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Women’s Division II National Player of the Week. The
sophomore helped lead USciences to a 3-0 road trip in Massachusetts which featured three wins over regionally-ranked teams, two of which were nationally ranked. Ye led USciences in scoring in all three contests – at No. 2 Bentley, vs. Assumption and at No. 25 Stonehill, averaging 22.7 points in just 28.3 minutes per game. She shot 56.7 percent from the floor (21-of-37) and made 22-of-23 free throw attempts and 4-of-5 three-pointers. She also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game while committing just two turnovers in 85 minutes. Ye began the road trip pacing a balanced scoring attack at No. 2 Bentley with a game-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and two steals in USciences win over the second-ranked Falcons. She gave the Devils their first fourth quarter lead, 72-70, with 2:07 to play. Ye had eight of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter of the Devils’ win over Assumption, the 10th-ranked team in the region. She also led USciences with six rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals. Against No. 25 Stonehill, Ye poured in 26 of her career-high 32 points in 27 minutes in the second half to seal up Stonehill Holiday Tournament MVP honors. She made 9-of-12 field goals, both of her three-point attempts and all 12 of her free throw attempts and also tied her career-best with three steals.
Jess Huber (North Penn) scored nine points in No. 7 University of the Sciences 78-47 win over Bloomfield on Saturday. In Thursday’s battle of unbeaten teams, a 67-61 loss to No. 16 Jefferson University, Jordan Vitelli (Central Bucks South) had 13 points, connecting on 3-of-5 three-pointers to move into sixth in program history with 163 for her career. Ye had career highs of nine rebounds and five assists. In last Sunday’s 80-75 win over No. 25 Stonehill , Ye, who earned Stonehill Holiday Tournament MVP honors, scored a career-high 32 points, connecting on 9-of-12 field goals, both of her three-point attempts and all 12 of her free throw attempts. She tied a career best with three steals. Huber came off the bench to make 3-of-5 three-pointers to finish with nine points. Vitelli added seven points and led USciences with seven rebounds and three assists. In an opening round tournament 63-54 victory over Assumption, Huber was the only Devil in double figures with a season best 11 in 17 minutes off the bench. Mikaela Giuiliani (North Penn) came off the bench to contribute four assists. In the Devil’s 76-71 win over No. 2 Bentley, Vitelli scored 15 points, eight in a fourth quarter that saw USciences outscore Bentley 22-11. Huber came off the bench to score nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Giuliani pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Junior Allison Chernow (Upper Dublin) scored 15 points in Emory’s 70-52 triumph over the University of Rochester on Saturday. The UD graduate connected on 4-of-8 field goals attempts, including a pair from beyond the arc, while sinking 5-of-5 from the foul line.
Widener University junior Devan Rimmer (Pennridge) was named the MAC Commonwealth Player of the
Week for the week ending Dec. 23. It is the second time this season she received the honor. Rimmer averaged 21 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting better than 50 percent from the floor in a pair of wins at the Cruzin Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In a victory against Curry, she scored 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting while adding four rebounds. The junior then scored 18 points, connecting on 7-of-14 shots, with five rebounds, three steals and an assist in the Pride’s win over Sage.
Rimmer led all scorers with 18 points in Widener’s 73-51 win over Lebanon Valley College on Saturday. Emma Gardy (Central Bucks South) connected on a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter.
Bridget Birkhead (Central Bucks East) followed up her pervious career-high 15-point performance with 18 points behind 4-of-7 shooting from deep to set a new career best in Mount St. Mary’s 89-77 win over Radford on Wednesday.
Sophomore Maggie Rakowsky (Central Bucks West) contributed 11 points and eight rebounds in Catholic University’s 67-44 win over Neumann in last Saturday’s championship game of the Jamie Lynn Roberts Tournament. In the team’s opening round 67-37 win over Wesley, Rakowsky scored 10 points.
Freshman Samantha Brusha (Abington) scored 13 points in Millersville’s 66-64 loss to West Chester on Saturday. She connected on 5-of-9 shots, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. She also led the team with a career-high five steals and pulled down six rebounds. In Wednesday’s 88-71 loss to Shepherd, Brusha notched a team-high 17 points and also pulled down a team-high six rebounds. She had three steals and connected on 4-of-5 shots from beyond the arc. In Millersville’s 58-55 win over Holy Family last Sunday, Brusha had eight points and three assists.
Junior Lydia Konstanzer (Pennridge) collected her fifth double-double in a row with 21 points and 15 rebounds in addition to five steals in Ursinus College’s 96-89 win over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. In Friday’s 54-38 win over Immaculata, Konstanzer scored 17 points and hauled in a career-high 18 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end. Her rebound total is the most in a game by a Bear since Lindsey Teuber recorded 21 rebounds in a 2012 contest. In the Bears’ 58-46 loss to Albright, Konstanzer collected a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Aigner Bookard (Cheltenham) scored 11 points in Cairn University’s 57-51 loss to Notre Dame (Md.) University on Saturday.
Freshman Emma Stanfield (William Tennent) contributed five points, five rebounds and two steals in DeSales University’s 70-66 win over previously unbeaten Trinity College (Conn.) in the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament at Lehman College last Saturday.
Gabbi Wright (Cheltenham) had six points and six rebounds in Kutztown’s 81-74 loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 68-56 win over Holy Family, Wright contributed seven points, six rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. In last Saturday’s 77-66 win over West Chester, Wright had seven points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal. Taylor Thames (North Penn) added six points.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Senior Tyler Chamberlin (Springfield Township) was part of the winning 400 medley relay that posted a time of 1:37.82, coming within .33 seconds of the pool record in Albright’s 133-52 victory over Hood on Saturday. Chamberlin finished second in the 50 free with a time of 22.93.
WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
Monmouth senior Allison Taub (Council Rock South) won the shot put with an ECAC qualifying mark of 14.65 meters (48-0.5) at the Wagner Invitational on Friday night. She moves to number two in school history with that mark. In the mile, Amber Stratz (Central Bucks South) won with an ECAC qualifying time of 4:59.03. Senior Brianna Stratz (Central Bucks South) finished fifth with a time of 5:02.09.
WRESTLING
Gettysburg junior Colin Devlin (Upper Dublin) finished fourth at 149 at the Waynesburg University Invitational on Saturday. Devlin made short work of his opening foe, recording a 30-second fall. He tallied a 7-6 win in his second bout before falling in the semifinals. In the wrestleback, Devlin posted an 11-7 win over Lake Erie College’s Adam Lieb to reach the third place match where he fell by a 9-2 decision.
Kutztown junior Mikey O’Brien (North Penn) recorded a victory by a fall at 165 at the F&M Open on Saturday.
Junior Bruce Graeber (Neshaminy) secured a 3-2 decision at 285 in Bloomsburg’s 21-14 win over Hofstra on Friday night.
