Non-league
WISSAHICKON 67, CENTRAL 35
The Trojans raced out of the gate to a 26-9 lead after one quarter and by halftime led 43-17. Matt Compas led the charge with eight first-quarter points and 12 of his game-high 16 in the first half.
“Matt was very active in the first half, but it was just good play all around,” coach Kyle Wilson said.
Harrison Williams scored seven points of his nine points in the first quarter, and Stefan Lowry had all six of his points in the opening quarter.
D’Shan Love also finished in double figures with 11 points – eight in the middle two quarters. Justin Rappaport had eight points, which included a pair of threes.
“We had a bunch of guys come off the bench and contribute,” Wilson said. “D’Shan Love, who was a starter last year, has been very professional and hardworking about not being a starter this year. He came in and had a real nice game.
“We have several guards that can really play well, and some of them have just had to wait for an opportunity. Most people will look at this team and say – this team is 4-8. You are what your record says you are, but they really are a fun group to coach. They love to play the game. It’s one of those groups – my heart breaks for them. They do all the right things. They come to practice, they work hard, they listen, they’re coachable, and there’s talent there. We just have found more ways to not win games than to win them. It was nice to get a solid win where everyone seemed to play well.”
The win – which snapped a three-game losing streak – came less than 24 hours after a 56-44 loss to Cheltenham.
“We felt if we took that first quarter off the Cheltenham game, we won the next three quarters, but we just couldn’t make up that deficit,” Wilson said. “I told the guys – ‘We really played well in the last three quarters. Let’s carry that momentum into this game,’ and they really seemed to do that and came out of the gates firing.”
The Trojans are still minus a pair of players who are injured – Alex Richman and Josh Twersky
“We’ve gotten real good play out of Stefan Lowry and Will Kunzier filling in when these guys are out and injured,” Wilson said. “We really can’t make excuses. I look at Cheltenham and they lost Zahree Harrison, so everybody deals with it.
“You want to get one of those games where you just play well. We’re such a different team when we shoot the ball well and take good shots. Tonight we got out of the gate early. We had a 7-0 lead and it just continued to grow from there. I’m very pleased with how the guys played.”
