GREAT VALLEY 49, WISSAHICKON 29
The visiting Patriots led 17-2 after one quarter. The Trojans never could dig themselves out of their early hole. Tessa Liberatoscioli did most of the damage,
scoring 10 of her game high 16 points in the first quarter.
“We would miss a shot, come down and get a good look, miss a shot, and she’d come down and make a shot,” Wissahickon coach Rodney Cline said. “After that, every other quarter was pretty much even.
“We came back in the third quarter – we picked it up. We explained to them – ‘Players make plays. You’re on the floor, you have an opportunity to make a difference, so step your game up. Realize there there’s a lot of time on the clock. You have to find it within yourself and each other to make plays.’ That’s what it came down to.
“They started making plays, picking up the defense. You have to embrace that moment when you’re down – look inside yourself and pull more out. Sometimes in life things aren’t going to go your way, but you have to keep plugging away because people are depending on you. The things you can get from sports are such a great life lesson. That’s what we try to teach as coaches in our program.”
Kaitlyn McGeary scored 14 points to lead the Trojans. Anna Schools added eight.
“These girls came out, they fought the rest of the way,” Cline said. “It didn’t turn out our way with a win on the scoreboard, but we won in understanding – no matter what the situation is, when things are tough, you’ve got to keep fighting. That’s the beauty of it. I’m proud of them.
“Hats off to Great Valley. They’re a good team. They move the ball well, they finish very well, they play good hard-nosed man-to-man defense, and they take you out of your game somewhat.”
Wissahickon (4-4, 2-2 SOL) will travel to Abington on Tuesday.
