CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 1, SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 0
The final score might suggest an absence of action, but nothing could be further from the truth. The Bucks – who had seen one shot after another thwarted by the Spartans and standout goalie Erin Roy – scored the game-winner with no time showing on the scoreboard clock.
“It literally came down to the final play of regulation where we earned a corner with seconds left on the clock,” West coach Dave DeAngelis said. “We inserted the ball as time ran out, there was a massive scrum inside the circle, and we were super excited when Kendall Siegle was able to tap it into the back of the cage for the victory.”
Roy was credited with 17 saves in a stellar outing.
“Erin Roy had the most incredible game,” Springfield coach Anita Stum said. “We also had four defensive saves (Annie Coll 2, Abby Congdon 1, and Emily Jackson 1).
“The defense played a very solid heads-up game, marking, working together. It was absolutely amazing. Charlotte Drapkin, Abby Congdon, Hailey Lesniak, and Emily Jackson have gelled as a cohesive defensive unit. I am very proud of them for the work they have done. Annie Coll really held the midfield together and kept us focused.”
Saturday’s game was the fourth in five days for the Bucks, who extended their winning streak to three games.
“This was a spirited and hard-fought match,” the Bucks coach said. “Credit to the Springfield defense and goalkeeper as they continued to lock it down inside the circle.
“We were not as protective nor did we step to the ball as well as we should have for much of this match. Over the final seven minutes, you could see our team begin to step up with better ball movement and crisper passing. Today wrapped up a good but long week of field hockey (our 4th game). Very proud of our student-athletes as they continued to battle for the FULL 60 minutes.”
The Bucks held an advantage in shots (19-0) and penalty corners (16-2), an advantage that was negated by Roy and the Spartans’ stingy defense.
“CB West was aggressive and kept their sticks down probably one of the hardest working teams I have seen this season,” Stum said. “They are a good team.”
Central Bucks West (4-6, 3-6 SOL) will travel to Council Rock North on Monday, and Springfield Township (6-3, 5-2) will be on the road at Abington on Monday.
