District 1 3A third place game
#3 CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 2, #4 BOYERTOWN 1
Aide Ierubino scored a pair of goals to lead the Bucks to a win over the visiting Bears in Friday’s fifth place game. Both goals came in the second half of a contest that was scoreless at halftime.
The Bucks took a 1-0 lead with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter when Ierubino turned a pass from Mimi Duffy – who began the play with interception – into a goal. The Bears answered with a goal by Peyton Shellaway in the closing minute of the quarter, and the two teams went into the final quarter deadlocked 1-1.
Ierubino scored what turned out to be the game-winner with 8:36 remaining in regulation, slamming home a shot that was set up by a through pass from Nina Mayro.
“We played flat for first half,” West coach Lori Ierubino said. “Very inconsistent: great moments mixed with sloppy moments.
“We made some adjustments going into the fourth and were able to get the go-ahead goal. Aida’s speed coupled with great lead passes was the difference is this game.
“Boyertown’s goalie had a really nice game coming up big in corner play. We are looking forward to states and can’t wait to represent CB West and District 1.”
The Bucks held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. West goalie Kendra Pitts was credited with seven saves in the win.
Central Bucks West (19-3 14-2 SOL) will face the loser of Saturday’s District 11 championship game pitting Emmaus against Parkland in Tuesday’s opening round of the PIAA 3A State Tournament.
