District 1 6A playback (7th place game)
#7 CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 71, #24 SPRINGFIELD-DELCO 55
On the heels of a pair of losses – first to West Chester Henderson in the quarterfinals and then to Methacton in a playback game, the Patriots rebounded to earn a no-doubt-about-it win over the Cougars. They head into the state tournament as the sixth place team out of District 1 6A.
“I think it’s really important because you want to go into states on a high note, try and build a little momentum, and I think we did that,” East coach Erik Henrysen said.
The Cougars led 14-10 after one quarter, but the Patriots rallied to knot the score 23-23 at halftime.
“We actually got down a few early but not a huge mountain to climb,” Henrysen said. “We just struggled a little bit with getting stops early and kind of settled in midway through the second quarter and closed the gap. Once the third quarter started, I felt like we started to click a little bit better.”
The second half belonged to the Patriots, who opened up a 47-37 lead in the third quarter. Dhruv Mukund’s nine points led the way in the quarter. They added to that lead with another 24-point quarter in the fourth to win going away.
Tyler Dandrea was 11-for-12 from the foul line in the second half. For the game, the Patriots connected on 23 of 29 from the charity stripe. The Spartans were 10-for-24.
“We did a job at the foul line too, so that played a huge part of it,” Henrysen said. “I think they probably missed 14 free throws, and we were able to convert.
“The second half was a physical second half to say the least. We got into the bonus and Tyler took full advantage of it. Sometimes you win games at the line.”
Jacob Cummiskey’s 19 points included three 3-pointers and led the Patriots. Mukund added 14 and Dandrea had 13. Miles Demby finished with nine, and Nolan Behm had seven.
Central Bucks East (20-8, 12-4 SOL) will face District 3 runner-up Chambersburg in next Saturday’s opening round of the PIAA 6A State Tournament.
“It’s a privilege to be one of the 32 teams left in 6A,” Henrysen said. “So we’re excited about it, but at the same time, East has never won a state playoff game, so we want to approach it as – we’re happy to be there, but we’re not satisfied, and we’d like to make a little history.”
