WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 2, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 1 (OT)
It was a beautiful night for soccer, and the main event of the West Chester Henderson Classic featured WC Henderson Warriors and CB South Titans. The Titans had the better of the possession, but with 19 minutes remaining, it was Henderson that got on the scoreboard first off a free kick. The ball was sent down the field and Henderson was able to pick up the loose ball and get off a shot that immediately deflected off a CB South defender, causing the ball to slightly change direction and spiral into the goal.
CB South believed they could tie it, and they were rewarded 10 minutes later when Jose Lucas Avila sent a dangerous ball in from the left flank that Josh Dozier flicked on to Tyler Jaskelwicz who headed it into the goal.
The match headed to overtime, and it was another set play against CB South that ended the game – this time the opening kick-off. Henderson sent the ball in deep and were able to pick up a loose ball and score the winner just 15 seconds in.

Coach Ed Brnardic:
“We did enough to win the game, but sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce the way you hope it would. We are proud of the way we played and how we dealt with adversity. Both of those things will serve us well as we head into our divisional games.
“We thank West Chester Henderson for the opportunity to play them in a night game on opening weekend. They were excellent hosts, and we felt privileged to be a part of this in-season tournament.”
–PROPS:
Lucas Tyson: “Hands down our player of the game. He did everything for us. He soaks up attackers like a paper towel soaks up a spilled drink. Henderson is so dangerous on set pieces, and they likely would have had their day with us if it wasn’t for Lucas. Some things you expect from your starting center back, but what you don’t expect is him chasing down wingers and putting in timely slide tackles or dribbling through the first wave of pressure to get us to the next level. He had an exceptional night.”
Rowan McDonald: “Rowan played with ice in his veins. He may be our fastest player, but he mixes those quick runs with some calm and cool play. He was causing Henderson problems all night with his feints, and he was the catalyst for many of our attacks when we build out from the back. And when he got down the field, he was dangerous in attack – he had the Henderson keeper beat only to be denied by the crossbar.”
Jose Lucas Avila: “Jose is the kind of player you want to cheer for. This spring he came in with a focus to learn and to work hard. His improvement and effort over the summer was exceptional but we didn’t know if he was ready for the big stage yet. Then late in the second half, with us down by a goal, we were forced to make a substitution, and we called on Jose. He stepped right in, showed great composure, and he gave us a new dynamic in our attack. It was a great moment when he delivered a nice ball that eventually led to our tying goal.”

The Vikings won the game in the second OT.

Neshaminy coach Tom Foley:
–On the game: “Wood got up 1-0 in the first. We were lethargic most of the half. We were losing 50/50 balls all half. First 10 minutes of the second half was more of the same. We made some adjusting in the midfield, and we were much more competitive.”
–The equalizer: “We managed the equalizer midway through the half. Damien Castro took a shot and Wood’s GK fumbled it to Connor Choi, and he tucked it in.
–The second half & OT: “We had a couple of nice sequences in the second half and OT but couldn’t get the go-ahead goal. They scored one in the second OT. They had a free kick on the left side of our 18. Floated it in, caused a little confusion, bounced around a little bit, bounced to their guy, and he tucked it home for the winner.
–Battling to the end: “I like the way we battled back in the second half to get the equalizer. If we clean a few things up in our midfield and start limiting our touches a little bit more, we’ll turn things around. We’ll get after it again against Southern Lehigh Monday night.”
–Neshaminy Player of the Match: “I thought Ryan McMullen was our player of the match.”

Scoring Summary
First half

Second half
Sydney Becker (P) from Sofia Gorski
Pennsbury coach Jenna Peters:
–On the game: “Today was another great team effort from start to finish. We challenged the girls to start the first half with the same energy they usually bring in the second and they stepped up. The team kept possession, found smart passes, and worked together all over the field.
–The goals: “Freshman Julia Hammer stayed composed in the middle and earned our opening goal, set up by a strong assist from sophomore Abbie Ellis.
“Junior Sofia Gorski consistently earned corners and created dangerous crosses, connecting especially well with sophomore Sydney Becker throughout the game. That connection paid off when Sydney got her head on one of Sofia’s crosses and finished for our second goal.
–Props: “Sophomores Sydney Becker and Piper Curtin also held it down in the center of the field, helping us control the tempo and maintain possession.
“Overall, a proud team performance with everyone contributing to the win.”

COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 0
The Indians opened their season with their second win in as many days, defeating the host team in a tightly-contested non-league game.
With overtime looming on the horizon, Audrey Rogan turned a pass from Keagan Terry into a goal with 12 minutes remaining that stood as the game-winner.
“I was really pleased with our overall play, level of intensity and effort, especially after playing in the heat on Friday,” Rock North coach Gavin Flannigan said. “I thought our whole senior group did a great job tonight with their play and intensity in a tough game. A great overall win and a solid start to the season for us.”

Coach Gavin Flannigan:
–On the game: “A tough game tonight against a well-coached Henderson team. A pretty even game, but we managed to take our best chance and come away with a win.
“I thought we started well and were the better team in the first half – we created some good combinations and some half chances. Isabel Diaz hit the crossbar from long range, no goals in the first half.
“Second half, Henderson came out stronger, and we had to defend a little more. Then with around 12 minutes to go, we had an attack that ended with Keagan Terry finding Audrey Rogan who finished well for the winning goal.”
