She Got Game Classic
NESHAMINY 46, BISHOP LOUGHLIN (N.Y.) 45
As bounce-back wins go, this was a good one for a Neshaminy squad coming off a loss in Saturday’s tournament opener.
On Sunday, the Redskins rallied from a 28-19 halftime deficit to earn the dramatic come-from-behind win over Bishop Loughlinfrom Brooklyn, N.Y.
With the no time showing on the clock and the Redskins – who trailed by as many as six late – still down by one, Grace Weyler stepped to the foul line for three shots after being fouled on a 3-point shot late.
Weyler sank the first shot for the tie, missed the second but then buried the third for the dramatic win.
“It was a really good win,” Neshaminy coach John Gallagher said. “This was one of the bigger wins in the years I’ve been here.
“They’re really good. They’re coached by the legendary Mike Toro. It was very similar to last night’s game. The only difference was we played better.”
Key players: Hayley Kolk and Grace Weyler led a balanced attack with 11 points each. Kolk also had eight rebounds while Weyler scored six of her points in the fourth quarter. She also had three assists and four rebounds. Camryn Rodriguez added nine points and nine rebounds, and Nicole Trespalacios had eight points. Mia Raivitch had eight rebounds and three assists.
Neshaminy coach John Gallagher:
–On the game: “In our first quarter, we had a hard time. Second quarter, we didn’t hit shots. In the third quarter, things started to fall for us. We did a much better job cutting against their man pressure, which got us some easy baskets.
“That resulted in them playing the back cuts a little bit more and freed up our shooters for some big shots.”
–Rodriguez is Player of the Day: “The Player of the Day clearly was Camryn Rodriguez. She had eight offensive rebounds. Yesterday, we had two as a team. She darn near got a double-double-with points and rebounds. She was the difference maker in the game. At one point, we looked around and said, ‘Someone’s got to step up,’ and it was definitely Camryn. She’s the first girl off the bench for us right now, and she had a big game in a very competitive atmosphere. I was happy for her.”
—Weyler excels down the stretch: “The Bishop Loughlin guards were extremely long and athletic and were giving us trouble. Grace Weyler was able to get in the lane a few times for pull-up jumpers. At the end of the game, we were down six with about two minutes to go. Cam hit a 3 to get it to three. Our defensive pressure resulted in a steal by Grace, who went in for a layup to cut their lead to one. With 40 seconds left, we only had one team foul, so we had to try to get a steal and at the same time accumulate fouls. We finally got them to the foul line with 12 seconds left, down one. They missed both foul shots.
“We didn’t take a timeout but pushed the ball up to see if we could get anything, but they had it covered, so we called a timeout with five seconds left. Ran a play, our first option wasn’t there, our second option was Grace coming off a Mia (Raivitch) assist. She pulled up for a 3, got clobbered and went to the floor with zero time left. The referee gave her three foul shots. Made the first, the second one was in and out, and the third one – the net didn’t move. It went through, and we walked away with the ‘W.’”
Up next: Neshaminy will travel to Pennsbury on Tuesday for a key division showdown.
