PENNRIDGE 18, EMMAUS 3
The Rams opened their season on an impressive note under first-year coach Maddie Dachowski. Nine different players scored goals with 11 players contributing points.
Pennridge had a 3-1 lead after one quarter and then blew the game open with an eight-goal second quarter to go into halftime with an 11-2 lead.
“Overall, I am so proud of this team and their performance today,” Dachowski said. “We didn’t know what to expect today from Emmaus after the result of last year (a 14-11 loss).
“I told the team to focus on one thing, us. Our goals have been set and eyes are on the prize, and this game was the perfect way to start the season. I am hoping this win will set a standard for this team. We still have a lot to work on, but overall, we are absolutely in the right direction.”
The Rams’ dominance began in the circle.
“We had a dominant showing with Madigan Posey, Gianna Leuthe and Leah Verespy taking over with their unit and controlling the draw,” said Dachowski.
Posey and Leuthe each had five draw controls, and Leah Verespy had four.
By the numbers:
Madigan Posey (4 goals, 1 assist), Gianna Leuthe (3 goals, 1 assist, 5 GB, 4 CTO), Cayla Wurz (3 goals), Leah Verespy (1 goal 3 assists), Maddie Boyer (2 goals, 1 assist), Freshman debut, only starting freshman in the lineup: Taylor Burkett (2 goals, 1 assist)
Pennridge coach Maddie Dachowski on the game:
–The beginning: “Went in today looking to avenge an early season loss to Emmaus from this time last Spring. Amazing energy going into the game, and everyone was ready to showcase all of the hard work we put into this preseason. Started the game hot and did very well on the draw, which continued throughout the entire game. Had some shaky looks in the first quarter, we got the first game nerves out of the way and were nothing but locked in for the second quarter.
“Gianna Leuthe, sophomore mid, was the first to score for the Rams. She is due for a huge breakout season and her stats today speak for themselves. She is still growing alot as a player and making adjustments to her game every day. She is a big part of our game plan this year. Second to the cage was freshman Maddie Boyer. I was really considering a few different players for that starting spot, and Maddie was just consistently stepping up and has risen to the occasion. The second the ball was in the back of the net, I knew I made the right choice in my lineup. A goal in the last 4 seconds in transition by Cayla Wurz from Aubrey Bailey ended the first quarter.
–Taking control: “The second quarter started with back-to-back goals by Madigan Posey. She is a go to player in all aspects, and she was ready to get points on the board. Maddie Boyer and Leah Verespy were the next two before Madigan completed her hat trick with 5:12 to go in the second quarter. Taylor Burkett put her first goal of the year away just 10 seconds later. Colbie Landherr, Sophomore Midfielder scored her first of the season with Taylor Burkett notching another one right after.
“Going into halftime, we talked about how the job is not anywhere close to being done. Games are filled with ups and downs, and the momentum is bound to shift. We were going into the second half focused on composure and playing clean. We were expecting them to come out hot after halftime, but I wasn’t scared because we were hungry for the win and ready for more.”
Second half we saw a ton of different looks and tested our depth off the bench. We continued to stick to the game plan, and we had incredible contributions from Julia Lenox on defense, causing two turnovers and coming up with two ground balls. Harper Posey with two caused turnovers and a ground ball. And a goal and assist from Kayla Verespy.”
–Getting defensive: “On the defensive end we had an amazing stand with our goalie Lily Blair coming up with 7 saves. Your unit is fierce, and it is hard to just credit one player for the success of the defensive end. Senior Leaders like Makenna Charles, Aubrey Bailey, and Abby Keller are no joke, this trio works together so well and I am lucky to count on a group like this.”
Up next: Pennridge (1-0) will travel to Upper Moreland for a non-league game Tuesday.
Emmaus 1-1-0-1 3
Pennridge 3-8-5-2 18

Wissahickon coach Chuck Wurzbach: “I was really happy with the team’s performance. Overall, they did a really nice job of distributing the ball and feeding the open cutters. Last year we would get into these periods of self-doubt during games, and I reminded the team to keep the intensity level up for all four quarters. This was a good start to the season, and I hope this gives us a bit of confidence for our game against Unionville.”
–Props: “Emma Greenberg was very effective from the draw circle. If she wasn’t winning it herself, she was getting it to her teammates. She and Lex McCabe were doing a great job working together. Ellie Stein led the defense that has two new starters and has grown into a really effective communicator around the 8-meter.”
Up next: Wissahickon will visit Unionville for a nonleague matchup at 5:15 pm Tuesday.
