Girls
Class 3A opening round
#11-1 Pleasant Valley 18, #1-5 Upper Dublin 9
Despite falling in Tuesday’s opening round of the state tournament, Paige Dinkel gave her team reason to celebrate when she reached a personal milestone. The senior scored a team-high four goals, including the 200th of a standout career.
Pleasant Valley opened up a 9-3 lead after one quarter, and although the Cards played their hosts even in the middle two quarters, they could not make up the ground they lost. The Bears put an exclamation point on the win, outscoring their visitors 5-2 in the final frame.
“We got behind early and just couldn’t recover,” UD coach Dee Cross said. “They were very good on the draw, and that kept us on our heels the whole first half. We were able to figure it out in the second half but could never get momentum.
“A bright spot in the game was Paige Dinkel getting her 200th goal.”
In addition to Dinkel, Bridget DiMartile added two goals and two assists while Anna DiMartile had two goals and one assist. Ava Shohen had three assists while Lily Buckius had one goal, and Maeve Hogan contributed one assist.
“I am so proud of the girls for the season that we had and how they never gave up,” Cross said. “We will miss the senior leadership and how much fun we had as a team.
“It is always hard to end a season with a loss no matter how you look at it. We could not have asked for a greater group of girls to coach, and we will miss spending every afternoon with them.”
The Bears were led by Devin Bush (9 goals, 2 assists) and Rylee Rath (5 goals, 2 assists).
Upper Dublin closed out its season with a 19-4 record overall. The Cardinals were 10-1 and won a share of the SOL American Conference title.
