SOL Liberty Division
Hatboro-Horsham 1, Quakertown 1
The Hatters were hoping to celebrate their 15 seniors with a win, but in the end, they were happy to escape with a tie.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead early in Wednesday’s contest on a goal by Nate Steinberg, and it looked as though that lead might hold until the final horn.
But the Hatters came up with some late-game heroics when Finn Marsden (Dan Simon assist) scored in the 77th minute, allowing the Hatters to escape with a tie on their Senior Night.
“Obviously, you always want to win on Senior Night,” Hatters’ coach Kyle McGrath said. “They’re always emotional nights and challenging nights.
“It was good to see the guys battle back. Daniel and Finn are both seniors, and to combine for the equalizing goal was important. Congrats to the 15 guys who’ve been part of the program for the last four years. That’s a lot of bodies and a lot of good players and personalities to replace.”
Nate Steinberg scored the Panthers’ lone goal early in Wednesday’s contest, using a Sebastian Angelini assist.

Hatboro-Horsham coach Kyle McGrath:
“Senior Night is always challenging. We’ve always played all of our seniors in some capacity, so we started 11 seniors and then rotated the other four in since we have 15. We got down early when Quakertown capitalized on a ball kind of in no-man’s land, and they made it very difficult on us, even as we started to get some of our regular guys in. But we kept pressing and pushing and it was pretty chippy. Unfortunately, we had some cards and actually a red card on one of my players, so we were down a man.
“We did finally score. The equalizing goal – we kind of put a ball over the top and was flicked on by Daniel into Finn’s path, and he was able to get behind the defender and kind of coddle it into the goal to tie it. We kept pressing for a winner, but obviously, we just ran out of time.”
Quakertown coach Steven Hippauf:
“Coming off back-to-back games and back-to-back senior nights, we knew it was going to be a challenge to get a result tonight. However, our boys battled extremely hard the entire match. Unfortunately, we conceded a goal with three minutes to go in the game, but it was a positive performance and much improved from the match with Hatboro earlier in the season.
–Props: “Our entire defense and goalkeeper deserves a lot of credit: James Burger, Zach Rider, Micah Detweiler, Tristan Cassel, and Jayson Taylor. Our midfield captain, Gavin Weinschenk, was brilliant tonight as well, playing the entire game and didn’t show any signs of tiring.
“Final shoutouts go to sophomore Sebastian Angelini who had the assist and junior Chase Dziedzic who played crucial minutes for us on the wings and did a great job.”
Up next: Hatboro-Horsham will travel to Upper Dublin next Wednesday, and Quakertown will host Palisades in a non-league match Saturday (5pm).

Harry S Truman coach Rob Brown:
“It was a nice day at the beautiful turf field at MaST III. We started a bit of a different lineup with coming off a tough league game yesterday and another tough league game tomorrow. We played a different formation and got one captain some minutes back after being injured for a week-plus. It was nice to see Justin Torres’s back on the field!
We got off to a slow start offensively, but Chris Rodriguez was able to hit a great corner kick that the keeper couldn’t handle to give us the 1-0 lead at halftime.
“We reorganized and went back to a normal lineup for us, and we scored two goals, another by Chris and then one by Keith Crowther. Once we had the 3-0 lead, I was able to get all of our JV kids into the game, and they did well and put a ton of pressure on MaST’s back line.
“I was happy with the effort and the respect they showed toward the game and the other team on their Senior Night. The last thing I wanted to do is blow someone out on their day. MaST III should be proud, this is their first graduating team!”
Harry S Truman 1 2 – 3
MaST Charter III 0 0 – 0
