Brooke Mullin quite literally did it all for the Redskins in Friday night’s opening round win. The freshman standout scored a game-high 16 points and also contributed seven rebounds, eight steals, four blocked shots and three assists.
“Brooke was fabulous tonight,” coach Joe Lally said. “For a freshman, she had a phenomenal game.”
Point guard Morgan Goldenbaum scored just three points but also had a big game, contributing eight rebounds, four assists, five steals and two blocked shots. Devon Storms had five points and seven rebounds, and freshman Allison Harvey added nine points, four rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots. Emily Alexis chipped in six points.
The Redskins found themselves on the short end of a 7-6 score after one quarter but took an 18-15 lead into halftime. They put some distance between themselves and Henderson with a 15-4 third quarter to go on top 33-19. They never looked back.
“The first quarter was just jitters,” Lally said. “We kind of shook that off, and we came out in the third quarter really focused. We settled in nice.
“We made an adjustment on the press at halftime. We thought we gave up some easy looks and let them break it a little easy. We made an adjustment on the press, and it was a three-point game at halftime, but we had it to 10 pretty quick. Brooke Mullin probably had three of her steals to start the third quarter.”
The win vaulted the Redskins into a second round game against the winner of fourth-seeded Mount St. Joseph and 29th-seeded Radnor.
“I think this was big for the kids, the coaches and everyone,” Lally said. “We have a lot of respect for our league, and we’re glad we won our league, but we still feel as though we have to fight for respect.
“Until we get into the state tournament or go deeper into the district tournament, we might not get that respect. That’s pretty much our goal. We’re staying focused. It’s one game at a time. How the luck of the draw would have it – you can’t get much more monumental than Mount St. Joe’s with their past history and how good they’ve been. We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do.”
Neshaminy (14-0 SOL) improved to 19-5 overall.
