North Penn defeated Episcopal Academy in Sunday’s Blue Star Classic at Spring-Ford High School.
NORTH PENN 45, EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 40
The Lady Knights found themselves staring at a 13-3 hole after one quarter but recuperated to outscore Episcopal 18-11 in the second quarter to go into halftime trailing by just three (24-21). They outscored the Churchwomen 24-16 in the second half to earn the impressive come-from-behind win at the Blue Star Classic on Sunday at Spring-Ford High School.
“It was a good win,” coach Maggie deMarteleire said. “We just really weren’t playing that well in the first quarter. We didn’t practice on Saturday.
“I was a little bit concerned, but in the second quarter, we started to play better. In the first half, Bri Hewlett, a freshman, came off the bench and played really well. In the second quarter, Taylor Thames really picked it up and had a couple of steals and layups off of it.”
Mikaela Giuliani, who led the Lady Knights with 14 points, scored six points in the second quarter and added six more in the pivotal third quarter.
“Mikaela fouled out with four minutes left in the game, and Mia Melchior, who hadn’t played the whole game, came in and did a really good job because they were trying to isolate their post player,” deMarteleire said. “She drew a charge and made a foul shot.
“A lot of different people contributed. Jess Huber played well in the fourth quarter and made some key buckets. We actually shot better from the foul line than we had been, so that was a good thing. Overall, it was a good win for us against a fundamentally sound team with a lot of good shooters. I was pretty pleased.”
Taylor Thames also finished in double figures for the Lady Knights with 10 points to go along with four steals. Irisa Ye also had four steals. Bri Hewlett had eight points off the bench, and Sam Carangi had six points.
A key stat in the Lady Knights’ second half comeback was the fact that they had just five turnovers in the second half.
“I thought our decision making in the second half was good,” said deMarteleire, whose team improved to 14-4 overall.
