District 1 6A playback games for 5th through 8th place
#4 CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 61, #8 GARNET VALLEY 51
It was raining 3s at Central Bucks East on Tuesday, and no one was more effective from beyond the arc than senior Kyle Berndt, who buried seven 3-pointers for a team-high 21 points.
“He was just being aggressive,” East coach Erik Henrysen said. “Kyle’s so unselfish that we are constantly asking him to be more selfish in terms of looking for his shot and being aggressive. He doesn’t need much room. He’s 6-6, he’s big and tall and long, and he can get his shot. We’ve been encouraging him to let it go whenever he has that small opening.”
Jake Cummiskey added three triples in a contest that saw the Patriots bury 12 3-pointers.
The win for district seeding was a significant one for the Patriots.
“Especially after the disappointment against Downingtown West, an emotional loss where we felt we didn’t play our best and left a lot on the table,” Henrysen said of his team’s 64-46 loss in Friday’s quarterfinal contest. “I think it was important to respond, and our senior leadership of Kyle Berndt really came through big early on.”
The Patriots raced out of the starting gate to a 23-15 lead after one quarter and took a 36-25 lead into halftime. Berndt accounted for 18 points of those points with six 3s in the half. The Jaguars trimmed four points off that lead in the third quarter, but the Patriots were in command on their way to the win.
“I was pleased with our overall response,” Henrysen said. “We responded early to Garnet putting some pressure on us on the defensive end.
“I thought we gave up eight early points on poor decision making on the defensive end. Although our offense got us
going, regrouping after a timeout defensively just to go over a couple of key things we felt like Garnet was going to try to look to exploit – that response and refocus was important.”
In addition to scoring 21 points, Berndt pulled down six rebounds. Dhruv Mukund shared the team lead under the boards with six rebounds. Cummiskey, who finished with 17 points, also had five rebounds and four assists to go along with eight points. Tyler Dandrea also was in double figures with 12 points and added five rebounds and three assists.
The Patriots connected on 7 of 12 from the foul line while the Jaguars were 2-for-4 from the charity stripe.
