Check out the recaps for SOL baseball teams in action Thursday.
Non-league
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 9, PERKIOMEN VALLEY 5
The Bucks broke a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the third and led the rest of the way on their way to the non-league road win.
Sam Greer and Cayden Wertz combined for the win in the circle.
“Overall, we played one of our most complete games,” West coach Brian Weaver said. “Sam Greer got back to work on the mound. He was spotting up his fastball well. Both he and Cayden Wertz only walked three combined on the day. When you avoid freebies, you give your team a chance. They did a great job today.”
Greer, who earned the win, started and threw four-and-two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and four runs (one earned) while striking out six and walking two. Wertz closed out the game, and in 2.1 innings allowed two hits and one run (unearned) while striking out one and walking one.
In the three-run first, Matt Carr drew a leadoff walk, and Max McGlone and Will Hogenauer (RBI) followed with back-to-back singles. One out later, Quinn Illig singled home a run, and a third run crossed the plate on Julio Ermigiotti’s sacrifice fly to center field.
The Vikings answered with three runs in the second to even the score. The Bucks regained the lead with a pair of runs in the third. After a leadoff single by McGlone and a two-out single by Illig, Ermigiotti lined a single to left that plated two runs.
West added two more runs in a fifth that was highlighted by RBI doubles by Hogenauer and Illig to go on top 7-3. The Vikings would get no closer than three the rest of the way.
“Ultimately, a team like Perkiomen Valley is well-coached and talented every year,” Weaver said. “You never feel like you’re entirely safe with a lead, and sure enough after we jumped out 3-0, we gave three right back the next inning. But our guys kept adding almost every frame, and when we gave up runs, we answered back right away throughout the game. It’s good to see our guys battle like that.”
Illig led the Bucks’ 12-hit attack, finishing 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Hogenauer was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and one run, and McGlone was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Colin McKenna was 1-for-1 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Carr drew a pair of walks and scored a pair of runs out of the leadoff spot.
“Quinn Illig and Will Hogenauer continued to be sparkplugs for us,” Weaver said. “Matt Carr manned the leadoff spot for us and got on base a few times to get things rolling.
“Max McGlone continued to be a renaissance man. He’s a brilliant defensive catcher, a locker room leader, and this year he’s got his swing rolling and it’s making all the difference for us. Julio Ermigiotti and Colin McKenna both gave us some solid innings of defense and timely hits, as well.”
