Twenty-four hours after falling to Souderton, the Knights were back on the diamond. They responded to that setback by turning in a stellar outing in the field and at the plate.
“One of the good things about baseball is you get to go out and play it 24 hours later. You don’t have to wait a whole week,” said coach Kevin Manero, whose team shares the top spot in the standings with Souderton. “I thought it was important that we got out there today and got a win under our belts.”
Matt Stevenson made sure the Knights would be winners, turning in a two-hit gem that included five strikeouts and just one walk.
“He threw a lot of strikes,” Manero said. “He kept the ball down in the zone for the most part, threw a lot of strikes.
“He’s had very good command his past two starts. At the beginning of the year, he wasn’t in real good rhythm. He was having a hard time finding his release point, but the last two outings, he’s gone out there and done a really bang up job. He’s getting out there, throwing all those strikes and making people swing. He’s doing a good job.”
Junior Tyler Siddal ignited the offense, driving in a pair of runs and finishing the game 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot.
“He’s really a heck of a player,” Manero said. “He runs a 6.7 60, he’s got a great arm, he’s very agile and athletic.
“What a super kid. He’s a throwback – he just loves to play, has a ton of fun, just wants to win, has a ton of energy. He’s an absolute pleasure to coach.”
The Knights scored the only run they would need in the top of the first and then added single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.
“It was a very fast-paced game today, it was a very clean game,” Manero said. “Nothing real flashy. The pitching was good, and we had our second two-hit shutout of the week.
“When we’re getting that kind of performance on the mound, we’re going to be able to rebound pretty quick.”
Sam Thompson was charged with the loss, allowing four hits and two runs.
