SOL Patriot/Colonial Crossovers
Bensalem 70, Central Bucks South 68 (OT)
Fantastic finishes have become a trademark of Bensalem basketball this season.
Two days after escaping with a 50-47 win over Central Bucks West, thanks to a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Antonio Morris, the Owls were back at it again. This time, they needed a 3-pointer by Noah Morris at the buzzer in regulation to even get to overtime.
After a blocked shot with the final seconds ticking off the clock in regulation, the Titans undoubtedly thought they had reason to celebrate a huge win, but Noah Morris scooped up the offensive rebound, had the presence of mind to get beyond the arc and hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime against the upset-minded Titans.
“We inbound the ball with about 5, 6 seconds left,” said Owls coach Ron Morris. “Jaidyn Moffitt gets his 3-pointer blocked. Noah is literally standing next to him. Noah runs, grabs the rebound, takes a dribble, gets behind the line and shoots the 3 from the corner as time expired. It’s one of the highest IQ basketball plays I’ve ever seen in 19 years of coaching.
“A lot of teams at that point would have put their head down – it’s okay, we just lost, but Noah went and got the ball, got behind the 3 line and got that shot off extremely fast. That was huge.”
In the extra period, the Owls went 7-for-8 from the free throw line and were able to escape with the two-point win.
“Nate Cooper came up with some big rebounds and steals,” Morris said. “He was 3-for-4 from the line in overtime. We were 11-for-14 from the line (in the game). Moffitt was 7-for-8, so when he’s making his foul shots, he’s even harder to guard because he’s so strong, he has broad shoulders, and he’s able to finish. Foul shots down the stretch were huge.”
Moffitt finished with 27 points, while Noah Morris had 16 and Antonio Morris 12 points, five assists, three
rebounds and three steals.
“Jaidyn Moffitt had a monster first quarter,” Morris said. “He might have made his first five or six shots. He was scoring inside/outside. We know he’s a matchup problem, and we were trying to feed him.
“Antonio (Morris) was getting to his spots. Noah (Morris) hit a 3 in the first quarter. Again, Jaidyn got in foul trouble in the second quarter, but he stayed mentally in it, which I’m so proud of and had another monster second half.”
Behind 12 points from Moffitt, the Owls led 23-18 after one quarter. The Titans held the Owls to just seven points in the second quarter and took a 33-30 lead into halftime. They still led by one (48-47) heading into the final quarter
“Amir Drummond had a big fourth quarter,” Morris said. “He didn’t have his best game early, but at the end, he got us some tough buckets in the fourth quarter.
“Micah White did a great job rebounding and playing defense. Idris Savadago had some huge rebounds. In overtime, we were up two, they were at the foul line, and they missed the first, so we called a timeout. We put Idris in to get the rebound. He and Moffitt did a great job boxing out.
“We got the rebound. Nate (Cooper) got tangled up. It was a dead ball with about .1 seconds left, and we defended.”
Friday’s win was the eighth in a row for the Owls – five of those wins have been by three points or less. Two of those wins were by one point, two by two points and one by three points.
“We continue to work hard, and we never give up,” Morris said. “I’ve got to thank God – when we have God on our side, anything is possible. We worked extremely hard all offseason, and we had the revenge tour going, and that revenge tour is nothing but to remind us every single day of how our season ended last year and to put everything possible on the line for each other this year.
“Our offseason started early last year, and these guys put in a lot of hours, but without God, none of this is possible. the way we’re able to just persevere and battle and battle. This team is really special. It’s just an honor to coach this group of young men. It just makes it really fun. It’s a great win for our team, our program, our school and our entire
community. We just work hard and never give up.”
Alex Shahin and Kyle Moyer had 12 points each for CB South, while Brett Barrett and Dylan Valentine added nine points each.
“My players did a great job defending,” said CB South coach Louie Ditri. “Ron has his team playing great and scoring a lot of points.
“They hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime, so you have to give them credit.”
Morris tipped his hat to his opponent.
“Coach Louie does a great job,” the Bensalem coach said. “They’re way better than their record. They’re a young basketball team that is scrappy. They’ve got shooters everywhere. He does a great job, and I know they’re going to win some basketball games down the stretch.”
Bensalem (12-1, 9-0 SOL) hosts Wissahickon Saturday in a nonleague game at 4 p.m.
“We told them, enjoy this tonight, but tonight’s a sacrifice night,” Morris said. “Go home, rest up, hydrate. Sacrifice tonight and get ready for tomorrow because it’s going to be another war. |
“We know we’re going to get everyone’s best shot. We know we’re worth a lot of points, and we have to be ready every single night. That’s no different tomorrow when we play Wissahickon. We know we’re going up against a tough team, and we have to be ready.”
CB South (4-9, 2-6 SOL) has a nonleague game Saturday itself, home against Penn Wood.

Neshaminy 53, Souderton 39
A slow start didn’t deter Neshaminy at home Friday night.
The Redskins relied on their defense all night and shut down visiting Souderton for an impressive 14-point crossover victory.
“We’ve lost a couple of close ones lately, so it’s good to win this one against a good team,” said Neshaminy coach Mark Tingle. “It was a good game. They led 15-6 in the first quarter, but from there we played good defense. We held them to five points in the second and third quarters each.”
A 15-6 deficit after one quarter turned into a 23-20 lead at halftime, and Neshaminy pushed its lead to 39-25 after three quarters.
Max Currie led Neshaminy with 11 points while Guy Horton had 10, Nate Townsend nine points, eight points each for Emeer Coombs and Ryan Meehan and seven for freshman Logan Gale.
“It was a big team effort,” Tingle said. “We needed to share the ball. We had 20 field goals and 17 assists. We shot well across the board.”
Clinton Kikonjo led Souderton with nine points.

Central Bucks East 58, Pennsbury 45
Tyler Dandrea had some foul trouble early but shook it off and heated up in the second half to finish with a team-high 15 points, as CB East got past Pennsbury, 58-45, in a crossover game on Friday night.
“We got off to a slow start,” said Patriots’ coach Erik Henrysen. “Pennsbury controlled the tempo early. They had long possessions, and we didn’t make shots, so it felt like we played defense for long stretches.”
The Patriots, who led 13-10 after one quarter, took a 32-20 lead into halftime. The Falcons trimmed five points off that lead in the third quarter, but East close out the game strong, outscoring the Falcons 15-9.
“We found our rhythm in the second half,” Henrysen said. “Tyler was able to get going a little and we built a lead. But credit to Pennsbury, they clawed back into the game.
“We battled through. We’ve had some great battles with Pennsbury over the past few years and tonight was another.”
Dandrea also had six rebounds. Dhruv Mukund had 11 points and five rebounds, Justin DiRoberto seven points, seven rebounds and six assists and Miles Demby eight points and eight rebounds.

Council Rock North 57, Pennridge 45
Oliver Schaefer, Grady Burt and Jack Curry did the damage in the fourth quarter, combining for 22 points as CR North broke a close game open and pulled away to defeat visiting Pennridge by 12.
“We had a good stretch where we got stops, we got a basket and then we got another stop,” said Indians coach Derek Wright. “That’s something we work on in practice is stop-score-stop. We had a couple of those in the fourth quarter, and if you can get a few of those, basketball is a very momentum-based game, and that can help you out.
“We were able to break pressure at the end of the game and get some easy baskets.”
Schaefer finished with a game-high 22 points – 12 in the first half – but he had eight in the critical fourth quarter. Burt had eight of his 17 points in the fourth.
“Oliver Schaefer and Grady Burt led us in scoring, but overall, our team defense and rebounding was much improved tonight,” Wright said. “(Dean) Behrens’ teams aren’t going to beat themselves. You have to go and beat them, so they were hanging around. We got some timely stops and baskets in the fourth quarter that gave us a comfortable lead at the end.”
Curry hit a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with nine points on three 3s.
“Jack Curry had some very timely baskets,” Wright said. “In two of our bigger wins this year, Jack has done that. We do need some secondary scorers.
“I’m happy for Jack. He was sick last week, and he lost a little bit of playing time, missed a couple of practices. Tonight, he was a hundred percent and really made some big shots.”
The Indians’ coach credited the efforts of several other in the win.
“The foundation of our defense starts with Tyler Rodowicz,” Wright said. “He’s another player who’s been injured throughout the year and is not 100 percent at all, but defensively, he just gives us great effort. He did a really good job on Charlie Rising in the fourth quarter.
“Grant Capozzoli and Brendan Green gave us great energy defensively. Brendan took a big charge in the first half, and Grant got on a couple of loose balls that I thought set the tone for us in the game, which was important for us.”
Rising’s 14 points led the Rams, who also received eight points from Dylan Horton.
CR North (5-8, 3-5 SOL) is back in action Tuesday afternoon at Souderton.

SOL Liberty/Freedom Crossovers
Upper Dublin 74, Cheltenham 44
Upper Dublin was ready to play from the jump Friday night, and a huge second quarter blew this highly-anticipated matchup wide open as the first-place Flying Cardinals scored an impressive 30-point win over Cheltenham.
“It was just one of those nights,” said UD coach Derek Brooks. “The offense was really good, the defense was really good. When you have that, you’re in good shape.
“We obviously knew (Cheltenham was) a good team. Our game was canceled Tuesday, and that gave up more time to turn our attention to Cheltenham. This was a big one. Cheltenham is a historical program in the Suburban One. Pat (Fleury) does a phenomenal job for them. The PW win was a great win for them. I saw them against Dobbins.
“But I thought if we played well we could beat them, and we did play well. Our young team is starting to grow up and mature. A month ago, I don’t think we win this game.”
The Flying Cardinals, who led 19-9 after one quarter, outscored the Panthers 26-10 in the second to go into the break with a 45-19 lead.
Upper Dublin shot the ball really well. Brady Fogle had 18 points and four 3-pointers. Ryan Mulroy and Noah Cohen added 16 points each.
“We stressed a lot on how big of a game this was,” Brooks said. “And they stepped up. Kind of everybody did. Noah Cohen was huge off the bench. He had 16 points in the first half. He hit four 3-pointers. He’s super smart, completely unafraid and skilled. He’s so focused and works really hard.
“Brady Fogle had big shots for us in the first half. Idris Rines made big plays. Mulroy made big plays. Kobe (Bazemore) and (Chris) Kohlbrenner played great on defense. The whole team played great. Everybody contributed.”
Josiah Hutson scored eight points for Cheltenham.

William Tennent 73, Hatboro-Horsham 53
Kirby Mooney scored 15 points in the second quarter, on the way to a 34-point night as Tennent took care of Hatboro-Horsham by 20 in a crossover victory for the Panthers.
“He came out with a lot of energy tonight,” said Tennent coach Robert Mulville. “He got things going for us. I think he had 21 at the half.
“At the half, we were only up nine, and in the second half, it was a really good team effort. We shot the ball really well. We were 8-for-16 from ‘3’ in the second half.”
Chris D’Ambria was second on the team with 13 points, while Sean Devine and Tre Stracuzzi added nine points each.
“I tell them, our goal is to get better every game. You can’t look past anybody. We have to play well and execute to win any game.”
Shane Phillips had 18 points to lead Hatboro-Horsham, while Kenny Lutz had 10.
“Our defense for the first half was tremendous,” said H-H coach Josh Meyer. “The third quarter sometimes just bites us. We were talking about how to figure out that third quarter. It’s just been a bugaboo.
“Give credit to Tennent. I want to say their first six shots of the third quarter were all 3-pointers and they just swished them. Kirby Mooney had a quiet 34 for them.”
Meyer said despite the loss, he’s seeing progress with his young team.
“The tournament that we played a couple of weeks ago, the guys kind of packed it in, but tonight they fought to the end,” he said. “They had commitment, we talked it through, they made adjustments, and I think we got it to maybe a 12-point game, and then they splashed a couple of shots and kept us at arm’s length from there.
“But you can see the growth, you can see the maturity come along. Definitely, the mental toughness and the heart is there. It’s growing and it’s getting bigger. Once (Tennent) started hitting those shots in the third quarter, we could have easily and quickly packed it in, but they stayed in it and they showed mental toughness.”
Tennent (8-5, 6-3 SOL) has a nonleague game Saturday against MaST Charter before returning to SOL play on Tuesday against Plymouth Whitemarsh.
