Non-league
NESHAMINY 49, CONESTOGA 48
Trailing by five with 15 seconds remaining in Monday’s non-league road game, things looked decidedly bleak for the Redskins, who somehow pulled off the improbable win.
Coach Mark Tingle describes the you-had-to-see-it-to-believe-it sequence.
“We had the ball, and Emeer Coombs hit a fallaway 3 right in front of our bench to cut it to two,” the Redskins’ coach said. “I had one timeout left, so I was able to call a timeout. There are six seconds left, they have the ball, and we’re down 48-46.
“They inbound the ball, and they decided to throw it deep. Nate Townsend was able to get a steal in the air, came down and threw it to Emeer, who got fouled, so the ball went side out with .6 seconds left. I had no timeouts, couldn’t draw anything up. Literally, it was just – pass it to someone open, catch it and shoot it. He passed to Emeer, who was probably two feet or so beyond the 3 at the top of the key – he chucked it up, and it went in. It was amazing.”
The win over a Conestoga squad that was 14th in the District 1 6A power rankings vaulted Neshaminy from 20th to 18th in what will be a 24-team field.
“We’re playing our best basketball right now, and we’re getting some big wins over good teams,” Tingle said.
The game was an uphill battle for the Redskins, who battled foul woes the entire night.
“We were down 12-10 at the end of the first quarter, but we had three guys with two fouls each,” Tingle said. “We were in foul trouble, and they took an 8-0 lead into the half.
“We came out, and we went on a 9-0 run to start the third, and we actually went up 29-28. It was back and forth, and towards the end they pulled away a little bit. Down five with 15 seconds left, you don’t really think you’re going to get much. You just keep playing, and it worked out in a crazy way.”
Coombs buried four 3s and finished with a game-high 24 points. He scored 11 of those points in the fourth quarter. He also had four rebounds. Townsend added 10 points and four assists. Logan Gale had seven points, and Max Currie had six points and five rebounds. Guy Horton led the defense with four steals.
The key to this one, according to Tingle, was simple.
“Just not giving up,” the Redskins’ coach said. “Conestoga is a very good team. They have some very good quick guards. They share the ball. It was just – keep plugging away.
“I thought our defense really stepped up. We held them to 20 points in the second half, we got some timely turnovers, we decided to attack a little more and we shared the ball.”
Neshaminy (12-7, 8-5 SOL) will travel to Harry S Truman on Tuesday.
