WISSAHICKON 53, CHELTENHAM 46
The Trojans – fighting for a spot in the District 1 6A Tournament – snapped a three-game losing streak with a win over the visiting Panthers.
Wissahickon led 19-16 after one quarter but found itself behind 30-28 at halftime. The Panthers held a 12-8 edge in the third quarter and took a 42-36 lead into the final quarter when the Trojans rallied, outscoring their visitors 17-6 to earn the much-needed win. Nico Vacchiano had 10 points in the fourth quarter and teammate Jona Sellenriek had seven.
Key players: Nico Vacchiano’s 26 points – 16 in the second half – led all scorers. Jona Sellenriek added nine points.
The Panthers were led by the 16-point effort of Chris Harmon.
Wissahickon coach Kyle Wilson:
–The schedule: “(This win) was much-needed. I swear – there is nothing more daunting than looking at that schedule and seeing Upper Dublin, PW, Abington and then Cheltenham right after that. So, it was just a really tough stretch. We knew we had those four tough games, and we knew to keep our playoff opportunities alive, we had to get a win in there somewhere. We can’t just hang our hat on one win against Upper Dublin and then a bunch of other – I won’t call them meaningless, but wins that don’t carry as much weight, so, yes, this was a really good one.”
–The game: “It was nice to see the kids fight after falling behind. Right before halftime, Nico went down, and I think the whole gym took a gasp because, one, he’s our best player, and he’s about 26 points away from a thousand. If the kid goes down right now so close to a personal goal, that would stink on top of it. He came back right before half and played the last two or three minutes. When he got in the locker room, he just stood and kept walking around and staying loose, and he had a phenomenal second half, and he carried us across the finish line as he often does.
“It was also nice to get a really good game out of the big guy, Jona Sellenriek. He had seven in the final frame. He’s a guy that often for us is inside out or a dish on a drive. He doesn’t get a lot of post-up opportunities because as soon as he gets it, he gets double and triple teamed, so, he’s very unselfish, and he found himself a couple of times where they didn’t help down low, and he was either able to make a move, draw a foul or get a nice bucket, so it was nice to see him really have an impact on the game.
“It was nice to watch the guys when Nico went down to hold down the fort until he got back. It was just a good team effort.”
