SOL Patriot Division
Pennsbury 65, Bensalem 55
Some games take on added meaning late in the year. For Pennsbury Tuesday night, it didn’t need much motivation taking on rival Bensalem in front of a packed house and fighting to lock down a district playoff berth.
And the Falcons came up with their biggest win of the season, pulling away late to knock off the first-place Owls.
“It was an awesome atmosphere,” said Pennsbury coach Wes Emme. “It was a who’s who in Lower Bucks County here tonight. It was a packed house. It was a good night.
“As hard as it was to hide it from our players, you hate to do that. We recognize the gravity of the situation. We had to have a big win to get in the mix for the playoffs. We were in there by a thread going into the game tonight. You hope a game like this raises you up.
“But I’m not worried about that. It’s more about playing well and continuing the way we’ve been playing the last week or so.”
It was Bensalem’s first league loss.
“All of the guys play AAU together, we’re in the same summer leagues, it’s a really good county rivalry,” Emme said. “Bensalem has really good players, and I’m a big fan of Ron Morris. There’s no coach I’m a bigger fan of. I love the energy around that team.
“Tonight, it was our will and our assertiveness right from the tip.”
Bensalem jumped ahead in the first quarter, only to see Pennsbury rally to come back and tie it at the end of the quarter. From there, it was a back-and-forth game.
“We knew they were going to have haymakers,” Emme said. “Jaidyn Moffitt, we didn’t really have an answer early in the game in terms of his physicality. He gets where he wants to be and is able to finish.
“I thought Danny Cohen was a force for us tonight.”
Late in the game, Pennsbury seized momentum for good with a resounding alley-oop dunk by Simon Dlugi, off the assist from Grayson Gozum.
“We were up about 5,” Emme said. “Simon is a great athlete for a big guy. We’ve been talking about throwing lobs, but to do it in a game, we had to practice it, and we have. To be honest, I’ve seen it in drills and practice, so I kind of saw it coming. It was a great pass, and Simon through down a thunderous dunk.”
Connor Taddei led a well-balanced Pennsbury scoring effort with 14 points, including 8-for-11 from the free throw line. Teddy Mangan added 13, Cohen had 12 points and Mike Roccograndi had 10 points.
“Connor Taddei made some big free throws down the stretch,” Emme said. “He really came through for us.
“The way we have to win, we have to have balance. We don’t have one guy who’s going to score 20 points a night. Danny Cohen really controlled the game tonight, Teddy Mangan made aggressive plays for us and got us in our stuff. Mike Roccograndi hit a big 3 in the first half and he’s just a tough, good defender. He can guard the ball. We also got big minutes tonight off the bench by Eric David and Grayson Gozum. They made a lot of plays defensively, getting to the loose balls.”
Bensalem was led by Moffitt with 19, Antonio Morris with 12 and Nate Cooper with 10.
“It was a great battle tonight,” Bensalem coach Ron Morris said. “Pennsbury did a good job and had well-balanced scoring.
“I need to do a better job putting our guys in place defensively. We will learn from it and be ready for North Penn on Thursday.”
Pennsbury (10-10, 7-8 SOL) entered the night No. 23 in the District One power rankings for what will be a 24-team district playoff. The Falcons will host Council Rock South on Friday.
Bensalem (15-3, 11-1 SOL), which started the night at No. 5 in the district rankings, will host North Penn in a crossover game Thursday.

Council Rock South 49, Council Rock North 38
In typical fashion of this Council Rock rivalry game, CR North never went away Tuesday night, but in the end, CR South pulled away for the 11-point Patriot Division win.
“I think it’s big,” said Golden Hawks coach Andrew Rogers. “Anytime, obviously, when you’re playing North, the rivalry game is huge. We were able to get one on Saturday. The main thing for us is to be ready to play one game at a time.
“They (North) played well. They’re very well-coached by coach (Derek) Wright. They did a good job staying with it.”
Ryan Wekluk led CR South with 14 points, as did Timmy Rahill. Overall, the Hawks showed a lot of balance and had solid efforts on both ends of the floor.
CR North was led by Grady Burt, who had 16 points.
“Ryan Wekluk played really well,” Rogers said. “He had 14, and 10 in the fourth quarter. He was also tasked with guarding Grady Burt. He had 16 for them and can really score the ball.
“George O’Brien had another great night. He only scored four points but does a lot of dirty work for us. A sophomore, Ray Hagland, had a huge steal and bucket for us right before halftime.”

Central Bucks West 50, Central Bucks South 45
CB West took what appeared to be a comfortable lead the third quarter, only to see CB South rally to get within striking distance, but in the end, the Bucks had too much and held on for the 50-45 victory on Tuesday night.
“We were actually up 20 in the third quarter,” said CB West coach Adam Sherman. “We had a couple of empty possessions, they banged a couple of 3s and got it to three.
“Matt Engle made a couple of plays, Bowen Gugger hit free throws to seal it, and we were able to pull it out. Give credit to South, they could have gone away, but they came back and were able to get it close.”
Gugger scored a team-high 17 to lead CB West scorers. Julian Phillips had 15 points, including 10 in the third quarter.
Ben Harrison led CB South with 19 points. J.D. Kollock added nine.

North Penn 53, Souderton 50
Trailing by double figures in the fourth quarter, North Penn got hot at the right time and with a furious 24-point final eight minutes rallied to knock off host Souderton on Tuesday night.
The Knights hit four 3-pointers in the fourth, two each by Lee Hammond and Norm Gee.
“We played pretty poorly for 28 minutes,” said NP coach John Conrad. “We were able to play well enough the last four, I guess.”
Souderton led 29-24 at halftime and then held North Penn to just five points in the third quarter and led 37-19 going into the fourth.
“We were flat,” Conrad said. “Things looked pretty dire. With four minutes to go, we were still down double digits. Lee Hammond got us going offensively. He hit two 3s and got five or six. We were aggressive and were able to pull it out.”
Gee finished with a game-high 16 points for the Knights. Tre Simpson had 15 points, and Ahmaar Godhania added 10 points.
Bill Sackor led Souderton with 15 points, while Nolan Watkins scored 14 points.

SOL Liberty Division
Upper Dublin 61, Abington 58
First-place Upper Dublin started fast and then did enough from the free throw line late to hold off visiting Abington late, moving the Cardinals one step closer to clinching the Liberty Division championship.
“We got off to a great start,” said UD coach Derek Brooks. “The first quarter was awesome, and we finished the first half pretty strong. We were up 37-23. Honestly, the third quarter was fine, but we didn’t close the quarter well.
“Credit to Abington. They ramped up the pressure. They got out and ran and made 3s. They made three 3s in the fourth quarter. That was big.”
In the first quarter, UD was the one making 3s, namely guard Brady Fogle who had three 3s and nine points in the quarter. He ended up with 20 points for the game, including five 3-pointers.
Ryan Mulroy added 17 points, 16 of which came in the first three quarters. Chris Kohlbrenner had 10 points.
UD went to the free throw line in the fourth quarter, going 12-for-18, including 5-for-6 for Idris Rines.
“We did not shoot the ball well from the line down the stretch,” Brooks said. ”We missed six free throws in the fourth quarter. We have to close up better.
“But overall, I’m pretty happy. We put ourselves in position to win. We did just enough to pull it out against a good team.”
Abington was led by Jeremiah Lee with 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Paul Glants added 12 points and six assists, and Aaron Jones had 11 points. Kellen Ingram was a force on defense, blocking seven shots for the Ghosts, who shot 25-for-50 from the floor and 7-for-18 from beyond the arc.
Upper Dublin (16-3, 12-1 SOL), the No. 2 ranked Class 5A team in the district going into Tuesday’s game, will host Plymouth Whitemarsh in another big one Thursday, with a chance to clinch the Liberty Division outright.

Wissahickon 60, Quakertown 57
(Check back for a follow-up on Dom Vacchiano reaching the 1,000-point milestone)
Senior Night didn’t start out so hot for Wissahickon.
“We first started out of the gates really ugly,” said Trojans coach Kyle Wilson. “They were up 8-0, 10-0 and we had a burn a time out. We were like, ‘Let’s go guys. It’s Senior Night, in our own gym, what are we doing?’”
The Trojans picked it up, were able to grab the lead and then push it to double figures in the second half before pulling out the win.
“Sam Wilkin was playing really well (for Quakertown),” Wilson said. “I know him well. He’s a friend of mine’s nephew – the best man in my wedding. He had a big game.
“But in the second quarter, we got back into what we were doing, making plays and getting shots to fall.
“It seemed like in the third quarter, we’d get it to 10, and they’d cut it back to five or six. We’d get it to eight or 10, and they came back. But we continued to play solid basketball. It was a good Suburban One battle and we were fortunate to come out on top.”
Dom Vacchiano led Wissahickon with 23 points and also scored the 1,000th point of his career. Younger brother Nico Vacchiano added 10 points.
Wilkin had 26 points for the game, 11 in the first quarter. Ethan Tomlinson had 21 points for the Panthers.

Cheltenham 82, William Tennent 79
(Check back for a follow-up story on Josiah Hutson reaching the 1,000-point milestone)
Cheltenham scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and needed every one of them, as it won a slugfest with William Tennent, in a game where the two teams combined for 161 points, 53 field goals and 43 free throws.
“Five games in nine days takes a toll,” said Cheltenham coach Patrick Fleury. “We have a tough rest of the schedule left.
“Josiah (Hutson) got his 1,000th point in the fourth quarter, which was nice. It was just a great team effort.
“You’re always happy with 80 points, but you never want to give up more than 60 if you’re defending the way that you were, but that has a lot to do with William Tennent. They are a playoff team, and at this time, everybody pretty much knows what you do and how you do it, so you have to adjust.”
Tennent led a high-scoring first half 46-41 and were still up 63-58 after three quarters.
“They came out playing well, but we were able to make a couple of plays,” Fleury said. “No. 2 (Chris D’Ambra) had 33 points, so hats off to him. We don’t have many that get 30 on us, but that’s a testament to him.
“Kirby Mooney had 24, so they both gave us problems on defense. We have to figure that out.”
Nile Tinsley led Cheltenham scorers with 23 points. Josiah Hutson added 18, while Kamal Mason and Kevin Addison-Anderson had 10 points each.
“We got a boost from Mark Hill, who’s a sophomore and will be very good in the near, near future,” Fleury said. “He’s a very talented kid.
“Kamal Mason came through for us. He had 10 points and probably had seven assists. Josiah had 18, but I have to do a better job of finding ways to get him to the line. He had zero free throw attempts.
“Nile had 23, Osei Johnson played a very, very good game. Salim Kelly also played well. It was just a total team effort.”
