SOL Liberty Division
Abington 66, Plymouth Whitemarsh 64
In the first game between these two rivals, Plymouth Whitemarsh rolled to an 80-58 win.
The second time around proved to be a whole lot different.
Abington played well from start to finish and pulled off the upset, as a last second shot attempt by PW was off the mark.
With the PW loss, Upper Dublin clinched sole possession of the SOL Liberty Division title with one game remaining.
A highlight of the game came in the third quarter when Mani Sajid buried a shot that vaulted him to the 1,000-point plateau. The junior standout entered the game needing 11 points to reach the milestone. He is the 21st player in PW program history to score a thousand points.
“Mani is an exceptional young man who I am honored to coach,” PW coach Jim Donofrio said. “I believe he is the first junior to reach the 1000 point milestone, and that is certainly saying something given the elite company he is joining of former PW greats.
“The fun of this is that his best days are still ahead of him, and I appreciate that I have the opportunity and responsibility to help him to continue to evolve and reach his potential.”
Key Players: For Abington, Jake Manigualt (21 points), Zion Hospedales (13 points), Paul Glants (13 points), Xander Grasty (12 points).
For PW, Mani Sajid (22 points), Terron Davis (9 points).
Abington coach Dan Marsh: “It was a total team effort. It was fun. We executed our game plan perfectly. We played great. We got up 12 at one point in the third quarter, and I thought we were cruising, but they made a hard run late, and we ended up winning by two.”
–The Game Plan: “The game plan was to make Mani (Sajid) earn everything he got tonight. We did something tonight that I’ve never done, and I was very unsure about it before the game. We put two guys on him to start the game, and we put the other three in a triangle just protecting the paint. Obviously, we were worried because they have the 6-9 kid (Michael Pereira), and they tried to establish him, but the three guys in the paint did a great job of making his life difficult too.
“A lot of times we would show the two so Mani would think he had two on him and then we would peel the other guy off to go to his regular man. Our defenses today – one was straight up man-to-man with a lot of help in the paint. Two was the two-man on Mani, and then we had our zone defense as three. We were just switching constantly in those defenses to try and keep them off guard and to try and keep Mani out of a rhythm. He still hit some tough shots, and he still had (22) points, but the first time we played them – he had 35, so we had to come up with a way to slow him down. I was completely okay if somebody else ended up beating us. I just didn’t want Mani to beat us.”
–The ending: “We were up three, and we missed two free throws, so they had a chance. We fouled on purpose. They made 1 of 2, and that made it a two-point game, and it stayed a two-point game.”
–Props all around: “Our kids did great. Xander (Grasty) played great, Paul (Glants) played great, Jake (Manigault) played great. They all played great. They all played their butts off, so I was really proud of them. We played our football quarterback, Antonio Ford, who has probably played in one other varsity
game, and he came in and gave us some solid minutes, and the bench had a lot of energy. When I say it was a total team effort, it really was. The only thing everyone on that court cared about was getting the win. They didn’t care who scored, how they did it. That’s what we’ve been trying to hammer home to them. Some guys had to have certain roles, and they did it tonight. They put their egos aside, and they executed the game plan perfectly.”

Nolan Behm had a huge third quarter, and CB East held off rival CB West in the fourth for the five-point win for the Patriots, who were 1-5 in their previous six games heading into Friday.
Behm scored 10 of his 17 points in the third.

For CB West, Roman Kulesa (17 points), Max Milillo (11 points), Dan Pellegrini (11 points).
CB East coach Erik Henrysen: “It was opposite of how our games have gone as of late. We took control in the third quarter and West made a run at us. They got it down to two, but we were able to figure it out.
“Shane (O’Hara-Jamison) got us off to a great start. He was hot early, making shots and being aggressive on the glass. I was pleased with the way we started. We got the lead to 11 in the third, and Nolan Behm had a quarter for us. He was taking the ball to the basket, and his slashing was effective.”
Next up: Central Bucks East (13-8, 4-5 SOL) will travel to North Penn on Tuesday, and Central Bucks West (7-14, 1-8) will host Pennridge on Tuesday.

Central Bucks South 53, Pennridge 49
On the road and needing to keep pace with division co-leader Souderton, CB South jumped ahead early on Pennridge’s Senior Night, and then with the game on the line, the Titans pulled it out for the four-point win.
South, which led 19-6 after one quarter, is tied with Souderton heading into Tuesday’s home game against the Indians for the regular season SOL Colonial championship.
Key Players: For CB South, Ben Harrison (18 points), Brett Barrett (10 points).
For Pennridge, Xavier Peters (16 points 10-10 FT), Marley Steward (10 points).
CB South coach Louie Ditri: “We got off to a nice start – it was 19-6 at the end of the first quarter. We were clicking. They had a different starting lineup in there for Senior Night, and that was a different look for them. Then, in the second quarter, we couldn’t hit a shot, gave up too many dribble drives and second chances.
“After that, the second half was back-and-forth the whole way. I think they shot perfect from the foul line, and they took a one-point lead in the third quarter. But we got it back and never relented. We kind of buckled down defensively after the second quarter.”
Next up: Central Bucks South (17-4, 8-1 SOL) will host Souderton on Tuesday in a Colonial Division showdown. Pennridge (11-10, 3-6) will travel to Central Bucks West Tuesday.

Souderton 59, North Penn 54
A lot went haywire for Souderton on Friday night. The Indians trailed North Penn by 11 in the second half.
In the end, however, the Indians – who trailed outscored the Knights 26-15 in the fourth quarter, taking back control and finishing it off in the end. In the fourth, Trey Bui led the charge with 11 points. The Indians connected on their last eight foul shots to seal the Knights’ fate.
Key Players: For Souderton, Trey Bui (21 points –15 in the second half), Nate Rusike (13 points), Nolan Watkins (11 points).
For North Penn, Ahmaar Godhania (16 points), Shane Ward (14 points).
Souderton coach Okoteh Sackitey: “Another close one. We were down two at halftime. In the middle of the third, we were down 11, and we cut it to (four) by the end of the third. They were playing good defense, they blocked a couple of layups. Some shots weren’t falling, and they were making some tough shots. We knew we were going to get their best punch. It’s a rivalry.
“We were focused, and so were they. It was a good back and forth matchup. There’s a phrase we say all the time – ‘Stay the course.’ I’m just really proud of how my guys stayed the course. The trust they have in each other and the maturity they showed, that’s just amazing. It comes from experience, it comes from being together and being a close group and having the love we do for each other. It was a really special night.
“Trey Bui had 21. That was a career high for him. It could be anybody’s night. They don’t care – they don’t care who it is. We care about each other, and we care about the win. I think our togetherness really showed tonight.”
–The comeback: “Chanse Salone hit a layup to put us up one, and Trey Bui hit a big 3 to put us up four. We had just clawed back to go up one after being down 11. At that point, you could be content with getting the lead back, and Trey wasn’t in that mindset, and he shouldn’t have been. He was aggressive,
and he had every reason to be aggressive. He was playing great, and he was aggressive without forcing. A shot presented itself. They doubled Chanse, Chanse made a great pass – he made the right decision. Trey had no one on him because his man left. Trey shot a confident 3 and knocked it down That was huge.”
–Clutch at the line: “We made our last eight foul shots. We were up by one with under a minute left, and Thaddeus Harter went to the foul line and scored his first points of the night. The mental toughness that takes to knock those two foul shots down – we’re up one, he hasn’t scored all night. My assistant coach, Sami Chouiraf, talked to Thad in the third quarter. Thad wasn’t having his best game. I put in Dylan Quinn, a sophomore, to take his spot on the court, and Thad was a little bit down. Sami just told him that he feels like Thad is going to have a positive impact. Sami said he doesn’t know what it’s going to be – if it’s going to be a block or a rebound or a putback, but Sami said to Thad, ‘You’re going to do something good when you go back in.’ Sure enough, he knocked down two free throws with under a minute left to put us
up three. Great performance by my assistant coach Sami there, and great foul shots by Thad. Great foul shots by the team.”
–Props: “Chanse Salone only had nine points, but he made so many good decisions with the basketball, getting his teammates good looks, playing good defense.
“Chris Lewis had a big 3 in the second quarter when we were struggling to score. He was ready to play good defense and knock down a shot when it came to him. I’m so proud. Nate Rusike hit a big 3 early in the fourth quarter. Every point goes a long way. We were down two in the fourth quarter to CB East, we were down in the fourth quarter by two to CB West last Friday, and this Friday we’re down six going into the fourth. We were down seven going into the fourth against Dobbins and pulled that one out, so we’ve just had the experience, and we know from experience not to panic in those situations. We know to stay together and stay the course.”
