SUBURBAN ONE/PAC CHALLENGE
Central Bucks West 48, Perkiomen Valley 44
Tied late, CB West got a big bucket from Sam Janikowski ,and then Matt Engle and Bowen Gugger put it away on the free throw line as the Bucks beat a solid Perk Valley squad to finish out a 2-0 weekend in the Suburban One/PAC Challenge.
“They’re very good,” West coach Adam Sherman said about Perk Valley. “They have their two leading scorers back from last year … they’re very dangerous offensively. I thought we did a very good job at the defensive end of the floor.”
Engle led West with 14 points, including 8-for-9 from the free throw line in the second half. He also had a pair of 3-pointers. Gugger finished with 12 points, while Roman Kulesa added 10 points.
The Bucks went into the season hoping to be much improved after a big offseason.
“It’s a really good sign,” Sherman said. “We looked at the schedule and thought the beginning of the season was going to be tough. For us to go 2-0 is very exciting. I feel we can be a very good team as long as we play within ourselves and stay healthy.”
CB West (2-0) opens its SOL Colonial schedule with a huge early test at home against rival CB East.

Central Bucks South 73, Pope John Paul II 72 (OT)
After losing its opener to Perkiomen Valley on Friday, CB South looked to bounce back in a big way Saturday and did just that with a thrilling overtime win over Pope John Paul II in a game played at CB West.
“We definitely hit some more open jump shots today,” said Titans coach Louie Detri. “We definitely have a lot to work on defensively, but offense was good today. We got break bench scoring.
“We started out 0-5 last year, and we didn’t want to start league play going 0-2 this weekend. We were disappointed last year, and we got out of what we’re installing with the new guys.”
Saturday was back and forth the whole way. South led at the end of regulation before Pope John Paul hit a late shot to send it into overtime. There, the Titans kept the lead most of the way, before sophomore point guard Alex Shahin made it a three-point game with a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining. The Titans entered the season with just one player with significant varsity experience in senior Dylan Valentine.
“We wanted to learn what we did (Friday),” Ditri said. “We wanted to make sure we don’t carry it over to today. We were struggling in the first quarter but closed it out down eight and then cut it to one point at half. We battled in the second half and definitely recovered.”
Kyle Moyer and Brett Barrett led the way with 17 points, while Connor Thompson had a big fourth quarter and finished with 14 points. Ben Harrison added 13.

PENNRIDGE MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
Central Bucks East 62, Quakertown 49
After a big win Friday, Quakertown started quick again Saturday against CB East, building a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter. But the Patriots clawed back in it, and then took over the game in the third quarter, eventually pulling away late for the solid 13-point win.
“It didn’t start that way,” said East coach Erik Henrysen. “They put 21 on the board in the first quarter. After that, we settled in, but (Quakertown) definitely came out storming again.
“We didn’t have much time to really prepare a gameplan, but we saw what (Miles) Longacre did (against Pennridge) and felt we needed to play to slow them down a little bit.”
Offensively, it took the Patriots a while to get going, but once they did they showed off a lot of different options.
Jacob Cummiskey led the way with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. He had 16 of those points in the second and third quarters.
Nolan Behm had 17 points, with a huge fourth quarter that saw him scoring 10 straight points in one stretch. He also grabbed six rebounds.
Tyler Dandrea added 12 points and Justin DiRoberto had two 3-pointers in the third quarter to put his team up for good.
“We got off to a slow start,” Henrysen said. “We settled for quick shots too early, but as the game got going, Cummiskey kept us in it early and then different guys stepped up at different times.”
On the other side, Longacre followed up his 40-point effort from Friday with 11 against CB East. Ethan Tomlinson and Sam Wilkin had nine points each and Kyle Rosenberger finished with eight.
CB East (2-0) opens up SOL Colonial play Tuesday at rival CB West.

William Tennent 78, Pennridge 68
Trailing by 14 after one quarter and as many as 20 points in the first half, Tennent turned it on in the second half, scoring 48 points total, including a 24-7 fourth quarter that turned the game in its favor on the way to the 10-point road win on Saturday.
“The last two nights we filled it up pretty good,” said Tennent coach Robert Mulville, whose team was coming off a 79-73 loss to Central Bucks East on Friday. “We didn’t get the win last night but got one tonight. We’re just trying to play at an up-tempo pace, and so far, the offense has been working for us, but we’ve got to figure out some of the defense a little bit.
“Our defense was good in the second half tonight.”
Led by junior Chris D’Ambra, who had six 3-pointers and a game-high 29 points, the Panthers had 14 3-pointers on the day. Seven different players hit 3-pointers.
Kirby Mooney – who had just five points at halftime – finished with 17 points, and Imad Abunima added nine points.
“I think we had a pretty good team effort in the second half,” Mulville said. “We had contributions from a lot of guys.
“Jayden Bright played really good defense in the second half. Sean Devine didn’t turn the ball over all night. A lot of good stuff happened from multiple guys in the second half.”
The Panthers, who trailed 30-16 after one quarter, were on the short end of a 46-34 halftime score. They outscored the host Rams 20-13 in the third quarter and then closed it out with an impressive fourth quarter.
“At halftime, we just told them to stay at it with the pace and try and push the ball,” Mulville said. “They shot the ball really well in the first half. When we went into halftime, they were shooting 65 percent.
“We just had to make sure we were closing out on shooters, and we tried to keep (Xavier) Peters in front of us. He did a great job though. He was hitting a lot of pullup stuff. We just kept at it. We do have multiple 3-point shooters. D’Ambra just got hot.”
In Friday’s loss to CB East, Mooney had 31 points and D’Ambra 26, combining for 57 points. One day later, the duo teamed up to score 46 points.
“D’Ambra and Moody were pretty consistent throughout the game,” Mulville said. “Chris had two 3s in the second, two 3s in the third and hit another 3 in the fourth.
“Once we got the lead, we were able to hold the ball, and Chris was able to control that. He handles pressure really well.”
D’Ambra has emerged as an offensive force in the first two games of his senior year.
“He saw a little bit of varsity playing time last year – he was coming off a football injury freshman year and then he didn’t play anything sophomore year and got back into it last year,” Mulvilel said. “He started to get more varsity minutes toward the end of the year. His work ethic is just really, really good, and that’s carried over into this year. He’s had two fabulous games to start the season.”
For Pennridge, which led 48-34 at halftime, Xavier Peters finished with 25 points, while Charlie Rising added 14. Jake Bolger and Cole Gehlert had eight points each.
Tennent (1-1) opens Freedom Division play Tuesday at Springfield.

9th ANNUAL JIM CHURCH CLASSIC
Upper Dublin 52, Souderton 48
Ryan Mulroy hit two key free throws late and took tournament MVP honors as Upper Dublin pulled away from host Souderton to claim the Jim Church Classic championship.
Two big wins to open the season is a big boost to a relatively young Flying Cardinals squad.
“We do have a very new squad,” said UD coach Derek Brooks. “Only three guys playing received
significant varsity time last year, so it’s a new group. But we spent a lot of time together in the offseason, and last year we lost the first game, so it’s nice to start the year off 2-0. Every win is important for us. Definitely a good start for a young group.”
Mulroy finished with 14 points, including eight in the second half.
Brady Fogle was UD’s high scorer 17 points, and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Kobe Bazemore scored 10 points, including six in the fourth quarter.
“I did not see Souderton all offseason,” Brooks said. “Yesterday was the first time I got a look at them. They love to mix up their defenses – threw some zones at us, some man, some press. I thought we moved the ball quickly, other times, we were stagnant.
“Souderton runs some really good set pieces (on offense) and they shot the ball well. They probably hit eight or nine 3s today.
“I give them a lot of credit. It was a back and forth game. We were fortunate to have a little run in the fourth quarter. They took the lead with six or seven minutes left. We took the lead, and then Ryan (Mulroy) is about as clutch as you can be on the free throw line.”
Chanse Salone had 16 points to lead Souderton, while Nolan Watkins added 14.

PANTHER TIPOFF CLASSIC
Executive Education Charter 57, Cheltenham 54
Big free throws down the stretch were the difference as Executive Charter won this back-and-forth battle to claim the title game of the Panther Tipoff Classic.
“They’re a good team,” said Cheltenham coach Patrick Fleury. “I think they’re in (Class) 3A, and I definitely expect them to have a deep run in 3A.
“We should have closed the game, but we didn’t do enough of getting to the basket and just making plays at the basket and for our teammates. We just have to do a better job of that.
“They were able to get in situations where they were able to get to the line and convert. We just have to put ourselves in a position to do that more and attack the rim with controlled aggression.”
Josiah Hutson led the Panthers were 16 points, Osei Johnson added 10 and Nile Tinsley finished with nine.
“Osei Johnson was stellar – defensively, he was amazing,” Fleury said. “Kamal Mason is a breath of fresh air. We always get a point guard that’s just special, and that’s what he is.
“Osei was special tonight as well, and Josiah Hutson had moments of the same. Nile Tinsley had an all-around game, but he was a little hobbled. We’ll get a couple players back from injury. We’re young, but we are definitely rebuilding.
“Executive Charter is a good team, so hats off to them.”

It wasn’t to turn us over – it was literally to slow us down. They did a really good job of it, so we had to adjust and execute in the half court. I was really, really happy that we were able to do both.
“I thought it was a good test to play a crazy, chaotic team like Fels and then a really disciplined defensive team like Cumberland Valley, who obviously has played against teams like this before. They lost by one to state champion Reading in overtime last year (in the District 3 title game), so I knew they would probably be more comfortable with the type of pressure we like to put on some teams, and they were.
“But we did a good job. We only had 10 turnovers, we executed. It was a good game.”
Jones also added five rebounds and three steals. Lee had eight rebounds. Damon Rawls dished out six assists, Kamari Brasher had six rebounds, and Jon Roberts added four rebounds and one block.
Abington shot 42 percent from the field and 35.7 from 3-point range. They grabbed 30 rebounds, 11 on the offensive boards.
“Aaron Jones was phenomenal because JJ (Jeremiah Lee), who is our scorer, struggled a little bit early, but Aaron carried us early,” Marsh said. They both ended up with 15, so that was nice.
“Damon Rawls has been a phenomenal leader and point guard for us. He’s been keeping the team under control, making the right calls. I’ve been really happy with his play too.”
Abington (2-0) has a big early-season game Tuesday at home against Plymouth Whitemarsh.
