SOL Freedom Division
William Tennent 69, Springfield Twp 36
One team was red hot heading into Friday night. The other was still looking for its first win.
It turned out, records didn’t matter as Tennent made its first win an emphatic one, a 33-point rout at home.
“I was talking about it earlier tonight,” said Panthers coach Robert Mulville. “I think with us – we wanted to get a win obviously – but we were more concerned with improving how we were playing. We knew there were
certain things we could do better, like taking care of the ball, making better decisions with shooting and passing.
“We never really came in and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got to get this win,’ we had to get better at doing some things we weren’t doing well, or we were never going to win, whether we were 0-5 coming in or 7-1. We just tried to put out our best effort.”
Key Players: For Tennent, Braden Goldberg (15 points), Scott Scheller (15 points, 6 assists), Jay Bright (14 points, 5 assists).
For Springfield, Chadrick Kiamba (10 points, 5 rebounds), Will McLaughlin (7 points, 4 steals), Aiden Hood (4 points, 6 rebounds)
Tennent coach Robert Mulville on the win: “I thought our defense was good. We tried to limit them getting into the lane. Their big kid (Kiamba) hurt us on the boards in the second quarter; He had eight points in the second quarter on offensive rebounds and at the rim, but I thought we limited him in the second half and did a good job on him.
“Overall, there still were too many turnovers than what we were shooting for; but they weren’t breakout turnovers leading to easy baskets. Our offense is a new offense for some of these guys, and it’s taking a little bit longer to get to it. Tonight, we made good decisions when shooting, when passing; and we were getting better open looks. We made nine ‘3s’ tonight, 9-for-26, not great, but still pretty good.
–Props: “Jay Bright, Scott Scheller and Braden Goldberg had fabulous games. Braden shot the ball well, Jay got to the rim and got to the foul line.
Scott Scheller was doing a really good job. He hasn’t had a chance to score as we were getting out of our offense those last three times, but he played a really solid game tonight. We scored 69 points, and they had 44 of the points.”
Next up: William Tennent (1-5, 1-2 SOL) will participate in the MaST Charter Holiday Tournament where the Panthers will face String Theory Saturday (1 pm). Springfield Twp (7-2, 2-1 SOL) hosts Upper Moreland on Friday, Jan. 3.

Cheltenham 55, Upper Moreland 53
Cheltenham rallied in the second half and knocked Upper Moreland from the ranks of the unbeaten and also claimed first in the Freedom Division with the two-point win on Friday night.
“We were down 8 or 10, and we just kept chipping away,” said Panthers coach Patrick Fleury. “In the third quarter, we came back, and in the fourth quarter, we took the lead. We held them off. We were up eight with 2:30 left and kind of squandered the lead against the press.
“I’m just proud of them – the game was up and down, up and down, so they were able to stay the course and make the adjustments and got stops at the end. You live to fight another day.”
–Props: “Kendall Jackson, the quarterback and now basketball player, made a couple of free throws. Justin Ezeukwu played well tonight. Osei Johnson was steady, Kamal (Mason) was way better defensively.
“It was a good team win. I believe they were undefeated in the league, so that’s good for us. It’s a team win right before break, so it was good to focus in. The team is building, they’re coming together, which is beautiful. We’re going to go back to work tomorrow.”

SOL Liberty Division
Abington 59, Wissahickon 47
Defense and free throw shooting in the fourth quarter enabled Abington to stretch its lead to double figures and pull away from Wissahickon in a Liberty Division Friday matinee.
Up 47-42 heading into the fourth, the Ghosts limited the Trojans to just five points in the final eight minutes. They also went 7-for-10 from the free throw line down the stretch as well.
“It was a battle all game,” said Abington coach Dan Marsh. “We were fortunate enough to get a lead and hold on.
“We caused some key turnovers in the fourth quarter and capitalized on them.”
Key players: For Abington, Jake Manigault (16 points, 5 rebounds), Paul Glants (16 points, 4 assists), Fazon Garland (11 points), Xander Grasty (9 points, 3 steals).
For Wissahickon, Nico Vacchiano had 22 points, 21 in the first three quarters.

Plymouth Whitemarsh 59, Hatboro-Horsham 43
Mani Sajid had a huge first three quarters, scoring 26 points, on the way to a 30-point night, as PW remained unbeaten with a 15-point win over visiting Hatboro-Horsham in Liberty Division play on Friday.
“I knew as soon as Bill Coleman took over at Hatboro, he really knows his stuff, and you can just tell from the film that he’s already doing some really, really nice things with those kids.
“We’re trying to get better at discipline while we’re being intense. It’s going to take a bit longer, but I”m trying my best to figure out how to motivate them, and I’ve not been overly positive right now, but I don’t know if that’s what they need if we want to accomplish our potential.”
Key players: For PW, Mani Sajid (30 points, 26 in first 3 quarters), Buddy Denard (9 points). For H-H, Shane Phillips (12 points, 4 3-pointers).
PW coach Jim Donofrio on the win: “I’m trying to learn to be patient with my guys. I even tell them, I have expectations from great teams in the past, and maybe it’s fair or unfair, but like it or not, they’re going to get those standards. I’d love to coach more from the positive, but I’m really going old school right now.
“You win a basketball game, you’re young, you should feel good that you had a nice Friday night. We’re a work in progress, we really are. We’re young through all this.
“There’s a great line by John Wooden, ‘It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts,’ and that’s where we’re at. I have a choice to make. Do I just coach steady and level and say we’re okay, or do I go really, really intense, so I’m going really, really intense and seeing what happens.”
–The game: “We started out the game with a big opportunity to send an early statement, and we missed almost every shot we took. At some point, do you get on them for that, or do you say it’s okay? That’s the trick right now. I’m not sure, but it took the whole game.
“Forget all the predictions of what we’re supposed to be. We just have to learn as we go. The good news is we do believe we’re supposed to win while we’re figuring all this out, so that’s where we’re at. I’m impatient for a reason. I’m trying to give them a standard they need to get to. Hopefully, that is the right approach.
“We have (Bonner-Prendergast) tomorrow, and it will be a very interesting game.”
H-H coach Bill Coleman said: “Not disappointed with the result at all tonight. We know who and where PW is. We also know who we are and where we want to go with this program.
“However, we just ran out of gas versus the bodies PW can throw at you. Now, can we continue to build on that effort?”
Next up: Plymouth Whitemarsh (6-0, 3-0 SOL) will host Monsignor Bonner in a non-league game Saturday (6 pm). Hatboro-Horsham (3-5, 1-2 SOL) will travel to the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood to take on Ligouri Academy Sunday 11:30 am).

SOL Patriot Division
Council Rock South 57, Council Rock North 47
After a pair of close losses to start its Patriot Division schedule, CR South needed a win and couldn’t have picked a better time for its rivalry game against CR North. The Golden Hawks pulled away in the fourth quarter to post the victory.
“The game, whenever we played them, both sides, it’s always an exciting game,” said CR South coach Andrew Rodgers. “It’s a good environment for the kids to play in, and I’m happy we were able to go out and get one tonight.”
Key Players: For CR South, MJ Thompson (27 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds), Ryan Wekluk (11 points, 3 assists), Ryan Delp (8 points, 6 rebounds), Ray Haglund (10 points, 2 steals), Joey Madara (2 steals). For CR North, Grady Burt (17 points).
Coach Andrew Rodgers on the victory: “Definitely for us, if you look at the first two games – credit to Neshaminy and Truman, they both played really well – but we lost both games by one point. Our message was ‘Stay with it.’
“We looked at a couple things we could clean up and fix, but really staying the course was our message. This is a really good group of guys, we obviously were close in the first two, but we felt there were definitely a few things we could do better, and we did. I was happy with our effort on both ends of the court. I’m proud of our guys.”
–Props: “I felt everyone who came in gave us minutes. That’s our message, whether it’s one minute or 32 minutes. MJ Thompson played great. He had 27 points, but he also had five assists. He did a great job staying with it. He was patient, but aggressive when he had to. Ryan Wekluk played great tonight. Ray Haaglund was great down the stretch – he went for 6-for-6 on the foul line in the fourth quarter, controlling the pace for us.”
Next up: Council Rock South (4-4, 1-2 SOL) will host Bensalem Friday, Jan. 3, and Council Rock North (2-5, 1-2 SOL) will be on the road at William Tennent for a non-league game Saturday (1 pm).
CR North (47) – Jack Curry 3, Josh Erman 8, Owen Crowne 9, Grady Burt 17, Aryan Prabhu 3, Andrew O’Keefe 7

Bensalem 52, Harry S. Truman 37
Bensalem started slow, but picked it up on both ends of the floor in the second half, outscoring Truman 35-17 after halftime to pull away for the 15-point Patriot Division win.
Truman led the game 9-4 after one quarter and 20-17 at halftime.
Key Players: For Bensalem, Amir Drummond (22 points), Aidan Mayfield (12 points, 11 second half), Jahmir Chatman 10 points.
For Truman, Davae Vaughn (11 points).
Bensalem coach Ron Morris on the win: “I have to give credit to Truman. Randolph (Jackson) and his staff did a job with their game plan, and we started really slow. It was a combination of us not executing and them doing a really good job defensively. We got down early. We only had four points at the end of the first quarter.
“Then we started turning up our defensive intensity a little bit, and Amir (Drummond) did really well in the second quarter, getting to the rim and getting in transition. We were down three at halftime, which we were happy with after the way we played and only being down three.
“When Bensalem and Truman get together and play, it’s always – throw the records out the window, no matter what they are. It’s a backyard rivalry, it’s a really intense game. We came out in the second half – I challenged the guys at halftime to increase their intensity because that’s the type of basketball we like to play. Really good defense and bring the intensity every possession, and the kids really responded.”
–The second half: “In the second half, our defensive intensity led to easy buckets on the other end. We shared the basketball. Jaden (Luchansky), #3, is a sniper. You lose him for half a second, and he’s burying 3s. Truman is much improved this year. We came out in the second half, turned up our intensity and were able to pull out a nice victory.”
–Props: “Jahmir Chatman had a monster game. In the second half, his energy level turned up, and I think it led everyone else. He’s one of our captains, and the other guys fed off of Jahmir playing as intense as he did. He finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, so he had a nice double-double.
“Aidan Mayfield continues to be ferocious on defense. Truman has some really good guards, and we really held them in check. Aidan Mayfield was on #4, Abdul (Diallo). He had eight points, but he couldn’t do much. Aidan did a really good job on him.”
–Picking up the slack: “Mikey Kramer wasn’t able to play and Kobe King hurt his wrist, so we were down two bigs, so we played a lot of small ball basketball. Christian Lee is still sick. He’s a warrior, he’s a leader. He tried to fight through his illness, but he wasn’t himself.
“We just had other guys step up. The best part of this team is they know it’s the next man mentality, and everyone continuously just bought into whatever their role was tonight. Once we got our defensive intensity up, we got some steals, we got stops and rebounds, we got out in transition, and we were getting easy buckets. It turned out in our favor.”
–Playing for the ‘B’: “There were a lot of alumni in the gym tonight, so it was good for the kids to realize what it means to play for Bensalem basketball and to represent the ‘B’.”
Next up: Bensalem (5-1, 3-0 SOL) will host the Dick Dougherty Holiday Tournament and will face Constitution Friday (7 pm). Harry S. Truman (3-4, 1-2 SOL) will participate in the John Monelli Holiday Tournament at Hopewell Valley Central High School, taking on the host team Friday at 1 p.m.
Truman (37) – Tre Winton 2 0-0 6; Jaden Luchansky 3 0-0 8; Davae Vaughn 4 3-3 11; Juliun Rodgers 2 0-0 4; Abdul-Zaiz Diallo 8. Totals 14 5-6 37.
Bensalem (52) – Jahmir Chatman 3 4-4 10; Aidan Mayfield 4 2-5 12; Amir Drummond 8 4-6 22; Dymaire Johnson 1 1-2 3; Jacob Eberthardt 2 1-4 5. Totals 19 12-21 52.
Truman 9 11 9 8 – 37
Bensalem 4 13 21 14 – 52
3-point goals: B-Drummond 2; T-Winton 2, Luchansky 2
SOL Colonial Division
Souderton 57, Central Bucks East 52
On the road Friday, Souderton started fast, holding CB East to just five points in the first quarter and then put the game away in the second half for its third straight Colonial Division win to start the season.
“We got off to a good start,” said Souderton coach Okoteh Sackitey. “We wanted to control the pace. We played really under control. We played a mature game and just didn’t get sped up. We got a couple of real big stops early. We played a pretty fluid brand of basketball in the first quarter with paint touches and kickouts and just making the right decisions.
“That’s a credit to the players because they just made good decisions with the ball, and they didn’t have too much setup for them. They just executed the things that were called, and when there was more free flow, they just did a great job taking care of the ball and getting good shots in the first quarter. That set us up nicely.”
Key Players: For Souderton, Nate Rusike (22 points), Thaddeius Harter (11 points), Chanse Salone (10 points).
For CB East, Shane O’Hara-Jamison (17 points, 5 3-pointers).
Souderton coach Okoteh Sackitey on the win: “CB East hit a half-court buzzer beater to end the second quarter, so we were only up six going into halftime after being up nine. That was a punch to the gut, but we responded really well, and I’m really proud of how the kids responded to that
with a strong third quarter.
“The fourth quarter was just maturity and patience and discipline and hanging onto the ball and making foul shots.”
–Getting defensive: “We played great defense. Holding CB East to five points in a quarter is huge, and then we held them to six points in the third quarter. The attention to detail and the effort on defense, it was there. They were locked in. That really worked and helped us out.”
–Props: “Nate (Rusike) was just getting to the basket. He took the ball strong to the basket in transition, in the half court. Really importantly, he made a lot of foul shots. He was 8-for-12. He knocked down some clutch foul shots in the fourth quarter, and that’s not easy to do on the road with their fans heckling and knowing what’s at stake. It’s just a big-time performance by him.
“Chanse Salone did a nice job with foul shots in the fourth quarter. That’s something he’s working on, and the hard work is showing. He was 3-for-4, given those circumstances, and I’m really proud of that, and I’m really proud of how they just finished the game.”
Next up: Souderton (5-2, 3-0 SOL) will participate in the Tim Ehst Holiday Tournament at Dock Mennonite Academy. The Indians will face Dobbins in an opening round game Friday (1 pm). Central Bucks East (5-2, 1-2 SOL) will travel to Arizona where the Patriots will face Monroe (WA) in an opening day game Friday at 12 noon.
Souderton (57) – Chanse Salone 10, Nolan Watkins 5, Nate Rusike 22, Trey Bui 4, Grady Kovach 5, Thaddeus Harter 11
CB East (52) – Nolan Behm 7, Shane O’Hara-Jamison 17, Graham Smith 5, AJ Molnar 14, Keegan Marasio 4, Connor Mekanik 2, Jackson Lutz 3
Souderton 12 14 11 20 – 57

Central Bucks South 48, Central Bucks West 44
Up one at halftime, CB South held rival CB West to just six points in the third quarter and then pulled it out in the fourth quarter for the Titans sixth straight win after starting the season with three straight losses.
Key Players: For CB South, Ben Harrison (14 points, 9 in second half), Brett Barrett (12 points, 9 in second quarter).
For CB West, Dan Pellegrini (16 points, 10 in fourth quarter).
CB South coach Louie Ditri on the win: “(CB West coach Adam) Sherman does a great job. They sat in that zone, and that’s a really good zone that he has, and we had some trouble scoring early. We made some adjustments at halftime and scored better in the second half.
“Even defensively, the first three possessions, they were able to dribble drive on us, they just missed a couple of layups. They did a good job getting to the basket. We listened to the players, they said ‘let’s play zone’ and we played more zone in the second half and that did help.”
–Props: “One of the benefits that we have is we have multiple guys that are capable of playing the other teams’ top players. We have six or seven guys that can play our man-to-man ‘D’ or zone. Tonight, Brett Barrett held Roman Kulesa to eight points. He’s been averaging 18 – he’s a great player – and they held him in check.”
–Going into Christmas break: “They’ve been practicing hard, playing hard. We could use the rest. I’m not sure I like having two days off before a game without practicing – I hope it doesn’t rear its ugly head – but it will be nice to get a couple days off and we’re playing a good team, Atlantic Christian.”
Next up: Central Bucks South (6-3, 3-0 SOL) travels to the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood where the Titans will face Atlantic Christian HIgh School on Thursday (4:15 pm). Central Bucks West (2-6, 0-3 SOL) will travel to the Modie Risher Holiday Tournament in Charleston, South Carolina. The Bucks will face North Charleston on Friday (6 pm).

CB South 8 14 10 16 – 48
CB West 12 9 6 17 – 44
3-point goals: CBS-D’Emidio, Barrett, Zakrzewski, Gies, Harrison; CBW-Pellegrini 2, Kulesa, Chuo
Pennridge 51, North Penn 41
An 18-point fourth quarter was the difference as Pennridge out-executed North Penn down the stretch for the Colonial League home win on Friday.
The Rams went 7-for-12 from the line in the fourth, as five different players scored in the quarter, led by Marley Steward, who had six.
Key Players: For Pennridge, Xavier Peters (15 points), Marley Steward (10 points, 6 in fourth quarter).
For North Penn, Ahmaar Godhania (11 points).
Pennridge coach Dean Behrens on the win: “I really felt like we got off to a really good start to the season, 3-0, feeling pretty good about ourselves. Then we lost three in a row. Winning is contagious, but so is losing. Tonight was an opportunity to get a win before Christmas and get a little steam going into our Christmas tournament.
“North Penn is a really quality team. They’ve had some big wins already and have played two or three more games than us.
“It was 20-20 at the half, but we were up on them 20-17, and we called timeout, and with five seconds left, we went to a three-quarters court zone to slow them down, but what that does is frees up (Ahmaar) Godhania for a ‘3’ and he ties it up going into halftime.
“Third quarter was basically back and forth, North Penn is up one, 35-34, but in the fourth quarter, we really started to click. We took the ball to the basket hard, got a two-possession lead, seemed to do a good enough job on the offensive end not rushing shots, and put North Penn in a situation where they had to foul. We went 13-for-20 at the foul line, that’s not great, but we hit enough foul shots to get us to a three-possession game and we were able to close it out.”
–Props: “Defense and rebounding was crucial to winning this game; I would say Connor Murray had 12 rebounds – I don’t know the exact number, but definitely had double digits in rebounding. Marley Steward came off the bench and I thought he did a great job on the boards. He probably had seven or eight rebounds.
“Obviously our engine, Xavier Peters, had a really nice game. He had 15 points, he handled the ball, especially in the fourth quarter when they threw a zone trap, diamond press at us. They were coming at us pretty good. I thought Xavier did a great job handling that.
“Ryan Schwind ended up with nine points, but he also face-guarded Gohania. He ended up with 11, but only had two in the second half. The one ‘3’ he hit at the end of the half, we didn’t guard him and that was a mistake on my part, but I thought Ryan Schwind did an unbelievable job of facing guarding him.”
Next up: Pennridge (4-3, 1-2 SOL) will travel to the Penncrest Holiday Tournament where the Rams will face Owen J. Roberts in an opening round game Friday (5:15 p.m.). North Penn (3-6, 1-2 SOL) wiIl participate in the Perkiomen Valley Holiday Tournament where the Knights will face the Vikings on Friday (6 pm).
North Penn (41) – Ahmaar Godhania 5 0-0 11; Lee Hammond 1 2-2 4; Gabe Altemus 2 0-0 5; Aiden Atkinson 3 1-2 7; Nolen Foust 2 0-0 5; JC Wood 1 0-0 3; Wyatt Martin 3 0-0 6. Totals 17 3-4 41.
Pennridge (51) – Rownan Smith 1 0-0 2; Marley Steward 5 0-0 10; Xavier Peters 4 5-6 15; Ryan Schwind 3 3-4 9; Charlie Rising 1 1-4 4; Connor Murray 2 3-4 8; Ryan Flood 1 1-2 3. Totals 17 13-20 51.
North Penn 10 10 11 10 – 41
Pennridge 12 8 13 18 – 51
