NESHAMINY 53, NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 52
Four days after defeating Truman at the buzzer, the Redskins won another nailbiter, and once again, it was Kyle Saglimben connecting on the game-winner. This one, however, wasn’t quite as dramatic.
“It was a back and forth battle the whole fourth quarter – we would be up, they would be up,” coach Mark Tingle said. “Kyle Saglimben hit a shot with just under a minute, and we held the lead.”
The Lions’ had a shot to win it but came up short. The Redskins snared the rebound and the win was in the books, evening the Redskins record at 3-3.
“Any time you get a win, it’s a good thing, especially going into the break with a couple days off,” Tingle said. “They’re a good team. They’re definitely going to have double-digit wins.
“They had one kid – Alex Walinski – who went off for 28. We knew he was really good, and he wasn’t missing at all against us. That kid singlehandedly kept them in the game. We were throwing everything at him, and he did a really good job of drawing fouls and making shots over our defense – single and double teams.”
The Redskins took an 11-8 lead into the second quarter and still led by one at halftime, 30-29. Damon McGovern scored nine points to lead the ‘Skins in the half. Walinski had 18 first-half points for the Lions.
The Lions held a 12-10 edge in the third quarter and took a 41-40 lead into the final quarter that saw the two teams exchange baskets.
McGovern led the Redskins with 19 points, which included a 7-for-8 effort at the foul line.
“He has the ball in his hands the majority of the time for our team,” Tingle said. “They foul him, and he’s doing a really good job of making shots right now.”
Sanglimben added 17 points – 10 in the second half. Freshman Sean Curley added eight points, which included a pair of threes and a 2-for-2 effort at the charity stripe.
“It was good for us – we had a lot of people contribute,” Tingle said.
Both teams were impressive at the foul line – New Hope-Solebury connected on 12-of-16, but the Redskins were better, burying 13-of-16.
“Last year we didn’t shoot that well from the foul line, and everyone’s back from last year’s team, so we’ve made it a big priority,” Tingle said. “Our priority is always to get to the line at least 15 times a game. Obviously, we’ve got to shoot a high percentage, which is good.”
Neshaminy (3-3, 1-2 SOL) will face Souderton in Friday’s opening round of the West Chester Rustin Holiday Tournament.
