Non-league
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 47, HATBORO-HORSHAM 46 (OT)
The young Bucks have had their share of close losses during the early weeks of the season. On Monday, they won a close one, edging the Hatters in overtime.
“I feel liked the experience part has been biting us in the rear end a little bit,” West coach Adam Sherman said. “The CB South game was a close game, the loss to Neshaminy by one, we lost to Abington in overtime – we need to learn from it.”
West trailed by two at the end of one quarter but then limited the Hatters to just two second-quarter points on their way to an 18-11 halftime lead. The teams exchanged baskets in the third quarter, and in the fourth, the Hatters came roaring back to even the score late in regulation on a basket by Kenny Lutz.
In overtime, the Bucks capitalized on eight trips to the foul line, burying six. Roman Kulesa had four of his team’s 10 points in OT, which included a pair at the foul line.
Key players: Roman Kulesa and Isaiah Rubenstein led the Bucks with 10 points each, Max Milillo had nine and Harry Myers had eight off the bench.
For the Hatters, Kenny Lutz led the way with 14 points while JT Thompson had 12 and Shane Phillips added 10.
Central Bucks West coach Adam Sherman on the game: “We were up eight at half, and then in the third quarter, I thought we fell out of rhythm. They fought back. We were up six in the fourth quarter, and they got a couple timely turnovers, made a couple of plays, hit a 3. We didn’t capitalize on a couple opportunities, and they were able to tie it up. We had a chance with 10 seconds to go the length of the court. We called a timeout, ran out a play and didn’t get a really good look.
“In overtime, we jumped out seven or eight. They came down and had an and-one, and they kind of worked their way back into it. We personally need to do a better job down the stretch.”
–Props: “We’re a young team, and we were missing one starter. It was nice to get the win. We had a couple of guys step up in new opportunities for them in the absence of Dan Pellegrini. Harry Myers came in and hit three big shots (including a pair of 3-pointers) which was nice to see. Carter Bass came in and hit a 3, which was nice to see as well.”
Up next: Central Bucks West (3-6, 0-3 SOL) will be traveling to Charleston, S.C., to compete in the Modie Risher Holiday Tournament and will face North Charleston in Friday’s opening game (6 pm). Hatboro-Horsham (3-6, 1-2) will participate in the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood. The Hatters will face Liguori Academy in Sunday’s opening game (11:30 am).

UPPER MORELAND 72, QUAKERTOWN 60
Sixty points is usually enough to win a high school game.
In Monday’s non-league game, it resulted in a double-digit loss for the Panthers as the Golden Bears put 72 points on the board, scoring at least 16 in each of the four quarters on their way to the win.
UM led 18-11 after one quarter and extended that to 37-28 by halftime. Not a whole lot changed in a second half that saw the Panthers battle gamely.
Key players: Colson Campbell led the Ghosts with 18 points, Jadon Cybook gave the Golden Bears a strong outing with 17 points – which included four 3-pointers, and Larry Hughes added 12 points.
For the Panthers Sam Wilkin led the way with 23 points.
Upper Moreland coach Dan Heiland: “One of the biggest stories of the night was that we were able to consistently score throughout the game. Our box score was 18, 19, 17 and 18, so being able to consistently score the basketball and execute offensively was the key.
“We did a good job defensively at times to limit Quakertown. They kept making shot after shot, and they never really went away. They played tough, they played physical, but we did enough offensively to hold off their big run. I was happy to see that.”
–Props: “Colson Campbell led us in scoring with 18. He had eight rebounds and eight assists as well. He had a really good game for us, just being our catalyst, someone we can constantly rely on to make winning plays.
“Larry Hughes was another big contributor for us tonight. He had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Being able to get that from your big man is a huge lift.
“Jadon Cybok hit three 3-pointers in the second half tonight that were instrumental to our offense in holding off Quakertown’s rally. The team continues to buy into what we are asking of them and doing their jobs and making winning basketball plays.”
Up next: Upper Moreland (7-1, 2-1 SOL) will compete in Cardinal Holiday Tournament at Upper Dublin. The Golden Bears will face Neshaminy on Friday (1 pm). Quakertown (0-7, 0-3) will participate in the Tim Ehst Holiday Tournament at Dock Mennonite Academy, taking on the host team Friday (3 pm).
