6th Annual Golden Bears Boys Basketball Tipoff Classic
Upper Moreland 78, Upper Merion 56
The Golden Bears made it two in a row Saturday, claiming the tournament title with a solid win over Upper Merion.
“Getting out to a 2-0 start, it’s a great start to the season,” said UM coach Dan Heiland. “Playing Franklin Towne Charter was a good opener on Friday, and then playing against Upper Merion was a
good test early on to see where we stand. We’re improving, but we still have things to work on.”
Sophomore Colson Campbell scored 26 points, while Jon Clark added 22.
“It was a good group effort,” Heiland said. “Colson Campbell led us with 26, Jon Clark backed him up with 22. Those two guys combining for almost 50 is really good for us. And we had guys that were filling their rolls, doing their things, playing together and trusting each, other doing small things.
“Colson Campbell, really being the one guy back from last year to really get varsity minutes, did a tremendous job in the offseason getting ready, Jon Clark was probably our eighth or ninth guy off the bench. He’d didn’t get out there too much. But he did a good job getting ready to take on more of an offensive role.”
UM (2-0) has another nonleague game on Tuesday at Morrisville.

Oreland Lions Tournament
Springfield Township 56, New Foundations Charter 33
Dylan McKenzie spent the fall excelling on the football field as a standout running back for the Spartans. He’s proving to be equally dangerous on the hardwood. McKenzie scored 16 points to go with five rebounds and two steals, garnering tournament MVP honors as Springfield pulled away from New Foundations Charter to win Saturday’s championship game.
“He’s such a good kid, he’s such a competitor,” said Springfield coach Rob Fusaro. “This year, he’s taking more of a leadership role, especially verbally and even by his play – shooting the ball better from the outside and just expanding his game.
“He was the leader, he kept us in it. He’s just a great kid and a great player. I love coaching him. I can’t say enough about the kid.”
McKenzie and Trey Mapp combined for 17 points in the critical third quarter. Mapp, who transferred to Springfield as a senior, finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Freshman Johnny Nolal had nine points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Both Mapp and Nolal earned all-tournament team honors.
“(Mapp) hasn’t played high school basketball for a couple of years,” Fusaro said. “He’s done a great job. He’s a great leader, he’s a great teammate, he’s a great scoring guard, and he did a really good job. He struggled a little bit in the first game, and then he accepted the challenge in the second game and really turned it on and gave us a great scoring punch.
“(Nolal) has done a really good job. We put him in the starting lineup as a freshman because he pretty much produces when he’s in there. He’s a great rebounder, he scores around the rim, he had five blocks. He does a great job. His motor keeps going the whole time, he’s a competitor, he’s a tough kid, and he just attacks everything.”’
For Springfield, starting the season 2-0 and defending their tournament title was a great way to start the season.
“It was good to get two quality wins against two solid teams, and just to have them all bought in together,” Fusaro said. “The bench was great as always. Everybody had the common goal of just winning each quarter, winning each possession and didn’t look past that we won it last year. They know their roles, they’ve done a great job doing what they need to do and supporting each other. It was a great weekend as a unit.”
Springfield Township will travel to William Tennent for Friday’s SOL opener.

“He’s been huge, obviously,” said Golden Hawks coach Andrew Rogers of Robinson. “He’s our lone guy back with significant varsity experience. He was a key player for us last year. Aidan Wallace and Cole Delp had nine points each for the Hawks. George O’Brien had six assists, four rebounds and three steals.
“It was a good bounce-back for us,” Rogers said.. “We have a lot of new guys getting varsity minutes. We really just kept plugging. We were down early and fought back.

Pennridge Memorial Tournament
Central Bucks East 66, Quakertown 49
Joey Giordano scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter as CB East held off Quakertown to finish the Pennridge Memorial Tournament at 2-0.
“We got off to a great start,” said Patriots coach Erik Henrysen. “I think it was 17-1. Defensively, we did a great job of calling out pretty much our assignments. We did a lot of switching. With a quick turnaround from Friday to Saturday afternoon, our guys did a good job of executing without a ton of time to prepare.”
Giordano also had eight rebounds to lead his team in that category.
“Giordano is really tough,” Henrysen said. “He’s a senior point guard, comes from an awesome family of competitive athletes. He and his brothers, Anthony and Nick, have had a whole lot of success at East. Today, he kind of saw the game through in the fourth quarter.”

Kirby Mooney and George Marion combined for 22 points and went 12-for-12 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, as Tennent rallied
to get past host Pennridge and bounce back from a tough loss to CB East on Friday.
“I thought we played well last night,” said Panthers coach Robert Mulville. “CB East last night, I think, just made some more plays than we did and hit foul shots down the stretch. I told them, if we play the way we played in the second half last night, hopefully, good things will happen.
“We played better down the stretch and made some good things happen.”
Mooney finished with 26 points, while Marion added 25. Isaiah Dawson finished with 11 points.
“We had some pretty good senior leadership,” Mullville said. “Of the guys on the floor for us in the fourth quarter, they were all guys that got meaningful minutes last year. It’s nice having some of that senior leadership, and from Kirby, being a junior.”
Pennridge jumped up 19-8 after one quarter and it was 36-31 at halftime. The critical fourth quarter saw Tennent outscore the Rams 29-16.
“We knew both games would be tough going in,” Mulville said. “Obviously, we would have liked to get both, but getting a split gives us a little bit of confidence of what we can do going forward. There are still things we need to improve on, but I think, as a team, they’re buying into what we’re telling them.”
